Your son is great and learning so well. You are steering him toward being mechanically inclined which is what many people lack these days. I steered my son in the same direction and now he is teaching me things. I love it as we learn from each other.

Yeah. I’m thinking about switching my plastic one on tundra. It’s on tight! Believe Toyota dealership over tightened it or never replaced it during oil changes 😅.

TCCN explained that the moment you messed with central tube, the bypass valve is ruined and you have no option but to get rid of the oil filter canister. The plastic canister is built with high quality plastic. The issue with them happens only when they got over tightened, which many make that mistake and overtight the canister beyond the specified torque force

There is a potential problem that can arise if the plastic cartridge canister is replaced with a metal one. On most of the engines that have this the oil filter it is on the bottom of the engine. Should you bottom out the front end of the car and hit a rock or other object under the engine area. The plastic canister will easily break. If that happens with a metal canister there is a greater risk that the engine block will be damaged where the canister threads into the block.

But the bottom is covered by a skid plate so that would never happen. For an FJ that is.

I wonder if their newer plastic upper intake manifolds on the 2gr-fks will end up being problematic when the car gets old. It was for other brand cars in the past.

anything plastic and heat cycling will not last as long as metal but the question is how long before it degrades

I rather replace the plastic cover then replace the other side if you ever cross thread the metal cover onto the other side! FYI after the last free oil change from Toyota check the plastic cap and see if any of the tabs are broken from over tighten. If so make them replace it or let them do the next oil change and let them deal with it. Ask me how I know.

For 2019 NX300 and 2018 Rav4 you don't need to change the tubing. You just use the tubing it came with? Thanks

I don't know what that tube size is for that model. I would compare and swap if needed. Tundra was larger and 4runners I know are larger than Tacomas.

Thanks for the info and recommendations! I installed a metal Dorman Oil canister and after a day of driving it has a leak. Just ordered the Toyota canister you recommend, but just wondering if you have had any issues with yours given that the aluminum may not provide as good of a seal as the plastic product?

the rubber rings are important to prevent leaks but as you saw in this video the plastic can crack. aluminum will be as good and longer lasting.

Did you have to drain all of the oil to change the oil filter housing? I ordered the metal one and I’m curious if I have to throw away and waste all of the oil because I just recently had an oil change.

Removing the canister doesn't drain the oil pan just the current canister. Be sure to top off

Same on tacos yes. 4runner and 5.7 v8 are different tubes.

bought a new metal oil housing from dealer for 2012 Toyota seinna 3.5L, does the tubing lenght have to be changed inside filter housing? or is tube change just for V8's?

Brilliant and wholesome content !,,,sometimes I wonder why the engineers designed it using a more “frangible material, then someone reminded me that sometimes the “fail safe” is built into the components rather than the machine ,,in other words, be glad you weren’t looking for a new engine block of for any reason the “component” were over torqued 😉👉🏻

Well you won't belive it,but toyota actually made a 4 bolt change out housing you can buy at Toyota parts to have a spin on filter ,for Under $150.00 you go order the correct spin on filter housing that fit 2009 to 2011 Corolla, nice toyota made them but didn't install them

Dealer cracked the plastic housing on my brother's 2015 4-Runner. They should be only torqued down to 18 ft lbs... I am guessing that;s the torque for the aluminum housing too?

@@RobDaman I always wondered why Toyota never just used Aluminum for this part in all of the applications of this oil filter design?? I would think over the life of the truck... the plastic one will wear or break at some point?? Even being serviced with the proper torque.

Not really. Here is the trick. 1. Use OEM filter replacement AND the gaskets O rings. 2. Lubricate that O ring gasket really well, personally I rather use conventional oil on it than the synthetic. 3. Spin that thing on by hand and be shocked when it bottoms out. That is your torque limitation. Can not be overtightened. Bonus trick: if you did put it on this way have confidence in yourself that you did not overdo it putting it on and when you are removing it it will come off just as easily. Wait for the engine to be cold again. Makes night and day difference.

If you have problems cracking a oil filter, then you shouldn't be as much as lifting a wrench to do anything. But, if the dealer messed up your oil filter then yeah change it. But then again, if you put on a metal oil filter and god forbid you have to take it to some service station again, then you are in for a even bigger trouble. The metal filter will cause the mechanics to torque it even more!

It doesn't void entire warranty. Upgrading aftermarket parts "void warranty" will only void THAT specific aspect of a warranty. As in, if something unrelated goes wrong somewhere else, it's still covered under warranty. But if something related to the oil housing cap is wrong, that aspect of the warranty is void.

It is NYLON not plastic. The metal and nylon are the same price. I just bought a nylon one on ebay for $28 shipped. I have a metal spare which was cheaper. I want to put soft nylon into my engine thread...not harsh aluminum. Imagine the cost if the engine threads get beat up !

ohhhh dont cry about that, the whole housing is plastic on my jeep ); .Im going to get an all metal one soon enough. Funny enough the jeep plastic screw on tops are super durable, you could chuck it at a wall and it would be fine, the housing is the weaker part lol.... leave it to chrylser for their odd decisions
