That AMP crimper/cutter is not available. It's a vintage tool and no longer made by TE, the company that bought AMP (Airline Marine Products). But I did put a Klien Tools version who produces excellent tools and should work very well.

i would recommend that you put a big washer under the head of the bolt. it applies pressure on plastic, and is a good idea to distribute the pressure on larger surface.

Fantastic! An elegant solution to a frustrating, perplexing problem. I used your bolt solution on my 2014 Tacoma. I live in Phoenix, so my only variant was to avoid using tape, as it would only melt and fall apart in the desert heat. Instead, I drilled three holes along the edge of the plastic clamshell and used zip ties to hold it together. I positioned the zip tie connection on the closed side of the visor so you don’t see the little bumps in the fabric most of the time. I then sewed the fabric back in place. It looks like Dr Frankenstein did the repair, but it’s not bad. Thank you for posting a very helpful video

The mirror comes out easily by prying the end of the mirror assembly closest to the end of the visor as opposed to the middle. That makes it easier to Skin the visor and then sew the covering back together when finished. Great video and Thanks for the idea.

You're welcome. Glad it worked for you. If you discover a way to reattach that cover, share it with us. In my case, the tape did fail due to cabin heat, so I used a small bead of hot glue on the seam. It's been holding better, just not as a pretty job. Mine took 13 years b4 failure, sounds like yours lasted 14 years b4 failure. I get the feeling some of those '08 are going to start to fail pretty soon.

You're very welcome! Hot glue is a great idea. That Arizona dashboard heat is intense for sure. Keep us updated as to how it holds up. The Texas heat is no joke either. A few months later we ended up removing the cloth tape and used super glue. that did pretty well. btw, where in AZ?

Thanks, worked for me on a 2013 Mazda CX-9, very similar. I cut the seam of the fabric with an X-acto and used super glue to close the seam when finished. Like another person I too removed the trim for the mirror to make it a lot easier to reseat the fabric. All works except that the mirror light does not work, I think I forced the contacts out of place and I should have tested it before gluing the fabric but it's all out back together. Happy to have a working visor but this did take me about 1.5hrs so in reality it would have been cheaper in relative terms to buy the OEM part :) but always fun to fix things.

Thumbs up. I tried a similar fix using a bolt through the entire visor. Looks like yours is a better solution since it isn't dependent upon any of the plastic. I've been sporting an old junk 4-Runner visor, but may have to try this fix again since the 4-Runner isn't an exact match and is missing the slider. BTW, should you have to try to wrap it again, the bezel around the mirror pops off so that you don't have to tuck the fabric. Oh, and don't bother with the hot-glue. I found even the "high temp" stuff gets soft and useless in the truck. (although mine is black)
@TSGEnt
@TSGEnt 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have hot glue experience in your vehicle. ;) The only plastic to worry about is the body of the visor. Great tip about the bezel. I pulled on it but was afraid to break it off. When it's time to repair the passenger side visor, I'll give it a try.

Yes! This method worked on my 2007 Nissan Versa visor, (hollow plastic, cloth cover)! The only difference is instead of drilling though that small hole, drill though same area between "upside down U clip" and install nut & bolt, tighten and trim bolt with hack saw.

Thanks for the video. I followed your instructions and it worked great for me. I haven't yet tried to use the visors a lot, but they flip up and down like they should. The one difference in my approach is that I decided to completely remove the foam/cloth covers. If it turns out the halves don't want to hold together on their own, a bit of duct tape should fix that. The foam covers themselves are only aesthetic and I don't mind the exposed black plastic. So what, as long as the visors work. Thanks again!
@TSGEnt
@TSGEnt 9 ай бұрын
You are so welcome. Glad it's working for you. I have thought about just using some scrap material and sewing a "sock" like cover to slip over the visor. But black plastic isn't a problem either. Best to you.

Could you explain in a bit of detail how this was possible? Did you put the washer and nut on the outside of the visor? Does the visor still close flush to the roof? I don't have a 2002 Highlander so can't verify for sure, but I'm reasonably confident that the sun visor concept, where sizes may vary, is the same across the board. And judging by the fact you as a 2002 HL owner is asking, the problem is the same, so the fix should be similar.

Thanks, I hope it helps if your Toyota visor gave out. The watch is an SNK805. I talk about it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNJ0a9xotJ6pdJ8.html and you can get one here: amzn.to/3erRSVf I've since outfitted it with a vintage (it's about 45yrs old) Speidel jubilee bracelet. You'll see where it came from in the video. Can't get this exact one any longer, but this one comes close: amzn.to/2QUXnDE If you have any other questions about any of this, let me know. Thanks for watching!

Huge help! I will just buy a new one because I need it to look nice but it’s good to know it’s not repairable unless you rip the vinyl off. Great video!

Help!!! I can't get the 'clam shell' to open up. I've already bent the plastic out of shape closest to the arm. The bottom of the clam shell pops open easily, but the area where I need to see where the broken parts are is held on pretty tightly. Did anyone else have that issue?
@TSGEnt
@TSGEnt 3 жыл бұрын
In my application it was just pressed fit into place and with a little prying with a popsicle stick that I whittled to an edge, on the seam of the clamshell, it opened right up. Is yours a 2006 model? I wish I could help more. Anyone else? Can you chip in and help?

Or you could’ve gone to a local auto wreck place where might’ve been able to pull a visor from a similar wrecked model for a few bucks, likely less than $10 although, admittedly, I probably would’ve done what you did and repaired it myself. Good job, hombre!

Thanks! Well, I thought about a salvage yard. Not very many Toyotas here in Waco however, and the savage yard here is filled with Ford and Dodge and you have to be careful not to step on cow patties. ;) Please pass this around. I'm certain a number of people may benefit from this. The plastics are coming to the end of the life on these things. I searched for fixes and none are like this one and there are a lot of breaking parts on these Tacomas and the Camerys which are very similar. Just use the KZfaq share button beneath the video window. Thanks!

Same problem on my 03 4Runner! I checked the junkyards in WI and MN and the have no visors left. On eBay used 4Runner visors run $100. I’ve rigged a Velcro system. Love my Yota but how many years of how many different models have this stupid design? Cmon Toyota!! 🤬

yes it did. it's failed and I fixed three times! I'll go at it again. The resistor that controls the fan speed on the AC is causing problems too. It's another known Tacoma issue.

An easier way to fix the visor: Install neodymium magnet(s) on the outside of visor with countersunk screw. Use steel fender washer and attach it to headliner (slightly off center from the magnets on visor) using a screw. It took me less than 10 minutes start to finish. However, it did take me 2 years to finally arrive at this method of solving the problem. Sorry, but I won't be posting a video of this. It's a very easy fix.

Have the same issue with a Landcruiser Prado. Don’t understand how Toyota have a reputation for reliability. Reliability extends to all parts, not just the motor running. Some of their components must be so old in the design. There are reports of this thing failing from 20 years ago and still no change. Toyota are crap and living off past glories.
