It's the best vehicle I've ever owned by far. At 300,000+ miles, mine had some issues for sure, but it never fails to start and get me where I'm going.

Economical? Probably not. I had a 2001 tacoma with the same V6 and it was terrible on gas. And its a few hundred pounds lighter than a t100. 17 mpg

@@omegarugal9283 The 1999 Tundra was based on the T100 as well. The '98 T and the '99 Tundra look virtually identical. Ever so slightly different grill, a V8 badge and a third door are the only tells. But it is true. The T100 used many of the parts from the small Toyota Pickup before it. The Taco was the natural evolution of the Pickup, but it has the same drivetrain as the T100. The introduction of the Taco left the T100 in a strange position in the market. Larger than small, but not "full size" large. Underpowered for a true work truck, but priced like a true "full size" work truck. So it was doomed. But I simply LOVE my T100. I think it's AWESOME!

@@ham7357 The 5vz-fe 3.4 v6 was released the same year as the first gen tacoma, it was also installed in the T100 the same year as an upgrade to the 3vz-e 3.0 v6. Does that make it a tacoma motor? I don't think so, because it went into both trucks at the same time. 190hp & 190 torques were good numbers for 1995. The '95 Dodge Dakota had 180hp & 225 torques, but it was also a 3.9L motor. I believe those were the only 2 'midsize' trucks in America at the time.

@Mad Anthony Wayne Mine will be 24 this year. Runs like a champion and I really haven't had to do that much work on it. Tune-up, oil change, replaced timing belt and under hood fuse block (it was shot when I bought the truck in 2015, lasted until February 2021) and that's it. I'm having some auto transmission issues, but I expect that will be fixed easily. It's got something to do with the data cable that runs from the trans to the ECU. When it's plugged in, the trans won't shift out of second gear. When it's unplugged, I can manually shift it, but it jumps from first to third, then fourth and no OD. I'll be getting it fixed up this summer.

@@heinzkitzvelvet yes the T100 is a 4Runner/Tacoma in different clothing. It is a reliable and cool truck but, people think it is closer to a full size truck. Anything you can tow with a T100 you can haul with a Tacoma or 4Runner

*_OUTSTANDING!!!_* Manual or auto? If auto, watch for the shift solenoids to begin to malfunction at around 300,000 miles. Mine have pretty much gone kaput. No local shop will work on the transmission, so I've bought all the pertinent shop manuals and I'm gonna have to change them out myself when the weather breaks. I watched a video of a guy with a 4 runner of the same era change his. Pretty straightforward stuff. One of the greatest things about these trucks, other than being built like Sherman tanks, is they are super easy to work on. Cheers!

Manual, but Ive had a toyota with the A340 trans before, shift solenoids are a very simple job, hardest part is cleaning the pan and making sure everything is spotless for reassembly. Change all 3 solenoids while you are in there with OEM parts, after you take the pan off remove the filter and both shift solenoids as well as the lockup converter solenoid are right there. @@kaptainkoolz6359 Thanks. Yeah, I'd planned on doing all three while I'm in there, and changing the filter as well. Then I'll have to troubleshoot my front axle too. It worked, and then one day, it didn't. I suspect it's a problem with the vacuum system, or possibly just a switch somewhere. Idk anything about it, but like I said, between the shop manuals, KZfaq and Google, I should've have too much trouble. Now, it's just a matter of getting the tools to do the jobs. LOL! These trucks are so rare these days, especially around here, I want to keep it and do some restoration and a few more minor mods. I'd like to turn it into a trail vehicle. Anthracite grey with heavy duty winch bumpers front and back. A snorkel. A roof basket. CB radio. The typical LED spot lights, and some rails on the bed for kayaks and whatnot and a roof mounted tent. I wanna get outdoors with it and enjoy it. It's pretty much been a highway queen since I bought it, but I'd like to do some exploring with it.

Jason Carpp Yep. I remember these old commercials too, especially the spokesman's unique voice. I was too young to afford a new one in the 90's. I just happened to pick mine up at an auction in Lexington, KY. Not looking for a Toyota AT ALL! I was in the market for an old Chevy K body. But my truck came thru the line and I thru a bid on it. Went back and forth with another guy. Finally I hit my budget ceiling and got out bid. I turned to walk away and the guy backed out and they called me back and gave me the highest bid at $1800. Only then did I realize that it was a T100 and fairly rare these days. So I started researching these trucks and quickly found out that these are really great trucks. Some say, the best trucks Toyota ever built. I know I am totally in love with mine. I've since jacked it up 5" and put 33" Mud Claw Radial tires on it with 3" spacers to make them poke out from the fender wells a little bit and put on a nice sounding Flo~Pro exhaust. I get compliments on it all the time. I think I'm gonna upload a video or two of it right now.

I believe I was in my late teens, early 20s, when it debuted. I couldn't afford to buy one if I wanted to. While I liked the compact truck ("Hilux" for other markets) I was glad that Toyota finally had something larger for those who want it (need it). My only complaint with the T100 was that its limited engine options. From what I've gathered, throughout its production run, four different engines: a 2.7 litre 4 cyl. engine, a 3.0 litre V6, a 3.4 litre V6 engine, and a supercharged 3.4 litre V6. I believe Toyota should've started out with the 3.4l V6 engine and the supercharged 3.4l V6. I would've also offered more engine choices. I would've offered a turbo diesel engine for those who need it. Another thing that Toyota should've done was market it against smaller trucks. Instead of pitting it against the likes of the Chevy C/K 1500, the Ford F150, and the Dodge Ram 1500, I think Toyota should've compared it to the Chevy S10 and GMC S15, the Ford Ranger, and the Dodge Dakota. The T100 more comparable to the compact and mid-size trucks of the time than the full-sized trucks.

Boy, There is a whole lot of "should've" in there. LOL! Looking at someone else's mistakes 20 years after the fact and saying what "they should've" done back when, is easy. But they eventually got it right with the Tundra. The T100 was a test bed, a beta. I wish it were still around because I would love to see what it might have become, but with the Taco & Tundra selling gangbusters, Toyota doesn't need it. Take care.

I know. A cousin of mine recently bought a 2013 Toyota Tundra crew cab. I believe they got everything right with the Tundra *except* offer a turbo diesel engine. I'd buy one if I could get it with a diesel engine. The Big Three trucks can be had with diesel engines, why not a Toyota Tundra? :)

Agreed. I bought mine at auction in 2015. I noticed it in the lot before it went up. It was locked, which should have told me something might be up, but it was my first auction ever and I REALLY wanted a 4x4. I was looking for an old Chevy square body. But the one they had there was total junk. Mine came up and it started really low, so I shot a bid on it. $1800 was my ceiling. Me and another guy kept running it up. Once it hit $1900, I bowed out. That's when the "other bidder" suddenly didn't want the truck anymore. So I got it for $1800. Now, it looked great. 1997 and in terrific shape. Once I got it home, that's when I realized the low beams didn't work. Only the high beams. $120 got the lights working, but it was a lousy job. So I wound up having to replace the entire turn signal stalk. It had also been wrecked in the front, but the repair work was very good. I've since put a lift on it, Dick Cepek BLACKOUT wheels with 33's, and a Flo~Pro Race V muffler for sheer loudness. I love my T100!

Mine too. It's gonna "officially" turn 300,000 by weeks end. I say "officially" because it had a busted speedometer cable for 4 years. 👍

I bought mine with 278,xxx miles in 2015. The speedo cable broke in 2016 and I just replaced it summer 2020. It doesn't say so, but I'm certain it has well over 300,000 in 4 years daily driving. Heat and air conditioner work great. I jacked her up and put a camper shell on. I am so damn proud of my rig. T100's are very rare these days, so I always feel like she's something special when I'm driving.

I was looking for an old Chevy square body when i found mine at the auction. $1800 and it was mine. I probably should have been suspicious when the doors were locked. But it was my first time at an auction. I got it home and quickly realized, it had no low-beam headlights. Only the brights worked. A few hundred bucks later, and the truck worked perfectly, and I've loved it ever since.

My T100 will be 24 years old this year and the electric windows work just fine. It's as solid and capable as I could ever want. More so than any 90's era domestic I've ever owned. They've ALL been sent to the junkyard long ago. Toyota built that T100 right.

Check Kelly Blue Book or kbb.com. I just checked your truck out based on what you wrote here, lots of questions it asked I had to guess about, but it came back with a value of $2316. So it looks like $1500 is a good price. I paid $1800 for mine at auction and it had 100,000+ more miles on it then the one you're looking at. If it's mechanically sound, I'd go for it in a heartbeat.
