It has been about a year since I uploaded my original video about my 1999 Toyota Tacoma that was throwing a P0420 OBDII code. That code means that the computer believes the catalytic converter is not working properly.
So, after replacing the seals at both ends of the catalytic converter last year, the code still came back again. It stayed in the computer for about the past year and never cleared itself. The check engine or MIL light stayed on the entire time.
So, I needed to go get a new inspection sticker about a month ago and I decided to clear the computer of any codes and see if I could run the truck through its "drive cycle" and then go get an inspection sticker before the light came back on.
It worked, but the craziest thing is that was about a month ago and the P0420 code never came back and the MIL light has never come back on. So, I thought I would update everyone who had been asking on that latest development. I think it's important because clearing the code and running the drive cycle and quickly going to get a sticker saved me $1000 (parts only). So, even if it doesn't stay off, this is a good way to save precious dollars on a truck that's already 15 years old.
It's a bonus that the truck apparently has decided to give up telling me to replace the catalytic converter--I won't argue with that! :-)
Please feel free to leave comments and good luck with your Toyota Tacoma if you are suffering the same problem!

Times have changed. At least here in Arizona. I’ve got a 97 2.4 2wd Auto with the PO420 code. Thought I’d be slick and reset it before driving the 8-9 miles to the emission center. They plugged it in, had me get back in the truck and failed me on the spot. Tech told me their computer can see reset events and that I needed to drive the vehicle at least 100 miles to ensure it went through a driving cycle wait 24 hours then return to have it tested again.

Reset your odometer and code at the same time. Then drive until light comes back on. If you did 18 miles for example then pull into inspection bay at 15miles. It worked for the past 5 years for me so far.

HEADS UP !!!! I had the same code !! I took it to Toyota, and they condemned the catalytic converter !! The catalytic converter only had 30 k miles on it ! I argued with Toyota and said no way could it be the catalytic converter !! They kept my truck for a week and still condemned my catalytic converter ! They cleared the codes and gave me my truck back and billed me $700.00 for their labor !! I drove the truck home, and within 15 minutes the code came right back !! WTF??? I crawled under my truck myself and found the problem in less then 30 seconds !! I drove the truck back and got the service department manager and showed him !! The problem was a cracked header and the crack would only show up when the engine was hot!! The heat expanded the metal revealing the crack that was throwing off the code !! They kept checking the engine when it was cold and they were totally lost !! I do my own work on my truck now !! I have over 300K on my 2000 Tacoma, and she runs like new !! Cheers !!

William Goble - I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma & took it to my mechanic & he said that it was a catalytic converter code & could be 1- it’s just the sensor that’s bad. 2- I could need a new catalytic converter. He cleared code & said if the check engine light goes on right away like 3-5 days it’s the actual catalytic converter, but if the light didn’t come back on for awhile like 2-6 weeks it’s just the sensor? It came back on a month or so later. Needed smog cleared code passed & now just waiting for the light to come on again. I asked mechanic if the catalytic converter was bad what would happen if I kept driving it as is? He said nothing! :)

Exhaust leaks have been a culprit constantly on my 2003 Tacoma, condensation rusts out the middle pipe at the cat flange causing leaks and eventually an error code.

You have to check temperature of the exhaust going into the Cadillac converter and coming out of the Cadillac converter using a laser type thermometer if there’s a 10% increase in temperature coming out of the Cadillac converter it is working properly. If not you need to replace it. You just have to be very careful that you’re taking temperature of the Cadillac converter itself and not the heat shield.

Hey thank you for posting these vids! I have a 98 2.7L 4 cylinder 4x4 and my cat looks good but the P0420 keeps showing up. I will change the gaskets first thanks to your video and I'll give you an update. Did you just take the cat off and put new gaskets on? Or did you need to take the whole exhaust system off?

Thank you! Unfortunately I have a small hole where those baffles are in front of the Cadillac converter I peeled one back in the weld that holds those on created a hole? I know it gets pretty hot before that so I’m gonna try to cut a small section out and put a coupling in there

My 2002 Tacoma threw the same error code, cleared it and I've gone a week and 200 miles and no re-appearance of the light.

I think your check engine light must have gone out. When out turn the key past accessory, the light should come on til the engine starts. Didn't see that in the vid. Otherwise great video .

Then you experts must know the check engine light is on the right side and can't be seen because of the steering wheel blocking it

Perhaps you fixed the problem when you replaced the rings on the converter. I think leaks can be the problem.

Your check engine light bulb is burnt out, it should come on when you open the ignition and turn off after running for a few seconds unless you have a code

Maddening, got a new catalytic converter, check engine light went off, used car several days, put 80 miles on it (not highway though) and on my way back to get inspection, the damn light went back on. Mechanic told me to drive it more on highway and come back. Right now about to go back after doing 18 highway miles. Today last day i can get sticker. This is so frustrating, dropped a lot of money on the new converter.

@@hak1985org thank you for your reply. As it is, like you say, lo and behold, Right now getting mechanic to replace the number 1 o2 sensor. More money. Then have to put 50 or so miles again, but I suppose no more than that, to get thing reset. Hope no more problems. It's an '02 Tacoma. I don't know how crappy the converter was they put in. But this is a friend's mechanic who runs a lot cheaper than everyone in park slope/gowanus brooklyn.

I did the same thing and got another 50K miles - I then replaced the Oxygen sensors for another 100K miles - now at 300K miles it shows cat code again - will probably have to replace them now
