We change the rear differential fluid in Josh's second gen Toyota Tacoma at 170,000 miles. What we find may scare you! Josh tries Amsoil's Severe-Gear oil.

little tip, you cant really over fill, just wait for that dribble and plug it up. then run for short drive and top off once more.

Don’t forget to check the vent cap on the top of the axle housing. When I did mine it went poof 💨 when I took it out telling me that the vent wasn’t working. I replaced it with new. And I cleaned the old one so it worked again. But they are cheap enough to just replace them.

Would you do a quick flush with a quarter quart of the new oil to be sure most or all of the old stuff is out?

Was that the first differential service at 170,000 miles? If so, have you ever done the trans, transfer case, front differential? I actually prefer the Amsoil 110 weight. It’s a little thicker.

Haven’t changed any other fluids besides oil. It’s only 2WD with rear locker so no front diff.

what's your view on changing transmission drain and fill (not flush) at 170k? With no history of it being changed before. Thanks

What’s cheaper, $40 in gear oil, or up to $2000 in a replacement/rebuiid? With regular lube changes ( and conservative use) that rear end will probably last up to 300K plus miles. If you choose to ignore it , the price will be very high.

100% agree, the unknown in my mind is the metal particles that is probably critical to keep things 'together' , which i will loose with new fluid and create more issues@@FIGGY65

Don't touch it. It's too late to mess with the trans at that mileage. You could develop slippage or other issues.

there's still about half of a quart of fluid inside. Use a fluid extractor to suck it out.

Isn’t the 06 a supposed to have an additive?
@ReigningSpirit
@ReigningSpirit Жыл бұрын
Amsoil already has the additive in it. You’re good to go. Used it myself without issue.

How does it now need it. I'm pretty sure you were supposed to change it at 60 or 90k miles.

In a cool climate a 07 Tacoma LSD takes 80 SAE gear oil, in a warm to hot it should use SAE 90 gear oil. Anything less than the viscosity and you'll have issues with the diff.

Also if your ride has a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) make sure the new gear oil has an (LSD) additive.

What if you live where is gets pretty hot and summer and pretty cold in winter? I know the dealer(Cincinnati) uses 80w-90 with an additive.

Ok first off, you should ditch the annoying background music. I don’t understand why anyone doing an instructional video needs to have distracting music playing. Second, you should have shown how you place the crush washer with bubble side facing out.

Third, …..if ya don’t know what bubble side up or out means and you need a picture, you shouldn’t be working on your own vehicle ( not to mention criticizing somebody that’s going out of his way to make life easier for all of us !!! ) STFU !

@@johnmellyn2700 lol it really doesn’t matter with crush washers, I’ve never had one not crush them leakes because of orientation. Just use a torqueometer majig to get the proper turnonewtons
