Hello all 👋🏽 I’m a happy new owner of a 2008 Tundra 5.7 (new to me) with 113K miles on it and was extremely curious about this sound. Thank you very much for this as I’m now able to sleep better now. I took it to my local Toyota for an inspection and everything came back golden but still this sound had my worried. Thanks again and take care 👍🏽👍🏽

My 2008 tundra with the 5.7 has about 300k miles and sounds exactly the same. The 3UR has a lot of moving parts in the valve train (it’s a DOHC engine, timing chains, VVT, etc.) and the injectors sound like a sprinkler system. You’ll notice the bottom of the engine cover has sound deadening foam to reduce how much of that sound is audible inside the cab. For an engine from 2007, it’s pretty sophisticated. Still reliable as hell.

@jamram9924
@jamram9924 3 жыл бұрын
More mileage typically produces a bit more noise since the connecting rod bearings, crankshaft bearings and other valve train components are worn. I’ve always used full synthetic engine oil like Royal Purple and Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic. My engine uses the canister type filter so I recommend the Wix XP series. Otherwise just used the cartridge type filter and fill that up with oil and allow the media to absorb the oil to avoid a dry start up. There are many preventative measures you can take to protect your drivetrain, don’t forget to service your transmission and go full synthetic and replace the filter (no flushes with the high mileage Tundra)

My current vehicle, an '18 Acura with the 3.5L V6 does make a similar ticking sound to your Tundra. I believe it's the combination of Port and Direct Injection sounds that is high pressured. Mine is doing it and spoke to a mechanic at toyota of over 17yrs. He said be careful. It may be simple gunk built up causing the chain tensioners to stick. Or youre actually having the one of the many KNOWN issues whcih anything from 07 up had weak tensioners and they need to be fixed bc it a part fails and drops, you'll need a new motor. I called the dealer right now and they don't even have 2013 motors. You have to by the bottom end and then all parts up top. The total cost is $13k without taxes and labor which is easily another $3k. Both your engines sound very mild. Mine sounds like a diesel at cold start. Many say they have the same but perception may be different.

Mine sounds pretty much the same 07 with 229k in the winter it sounds like a diesel in the cab under the hood it’s much quieter, and yes Toyota oil makes it quieter. There’s a lot going on under those valve covers.

My 2015, that I've had for not quite a year. Had 273k, now 286k, takes quite a bit of warming, before it quiets down. The chains are indestructible. But I'm thinking the tensioner, and there's also plastic guides that wear out.

Honestly with that mileage I wouldn't worry about the valve train noise. What you can do is use the Toyota oil with some Lucas oil stabilizer and it usually will help with the ticking.

Mine makes the "diesel" sounds more when it's cold and quiets down once it's warm. I had a mechanic tell me it was because the different metals used in the engine and how they expand at different rates, don't know if that's true or not. 258k miles on it.

Thanks, I just bought an 07 Limited with 93k and noticed a bit of the 'diesel' sound and wondered if that was the norm. I did notice that when you were around the top (time 2:30 or so) it sounded like injector snap and around the bottom an exhaust valve closing snap (time 2:50 or so).

The Toyota Tundra 5.7 is a noisy engine but if you have a ticking sound when its cold and gets quieter when its warmed up its probably a small exhaust leak from one or both exhaust manifolds. Its a very common problem with tundras.

I can't hear anything your talking about... They sound the same to me... Now the 4.7 in my 05 it sounds like a diesel. This is due to the dual overhead cam design. I believe all Toyota engines have the same valve cup to cam lifterless design. It is what causes it.

5.7 will quiet down with 91 or higher octane try a tank full you'll hear the difference. Also run a bottle of lucas fuel injector cleaner through a tank or two. Have a brand new 2021 1794 and it sounded like a diesel. I tried this and it sounds better runs smother nice and quite riding down the road. Its not a cheap fix for your wallet on fill ups but it works.

There's your noise, then there's a different noise that is more of the ticking diesel sound, which is louder and isn't normal. It seems that this louder ticking is often the left timing chain tensioner sticking, causing the timing chain to slap around. That issue should get addressed before too long.
