Glad I found your video, I almost bought that kit from Amazon, definitely going with Dayco parts now. Thx

STAY AWAY FROM GATES! Their box looks cool but their product SUCKS! I have had water pumps fail from Gates after 60,000 miles and cause catastraphic engine damage to a Honda V6 J Series engine. Gates belts that get holes in them after 2 - 3 months. GATES IS JUNK! On your OE tensioner just replace the bearing with a high quality Koyo bearing. The spring in the tensioner rarely fails and it's the bearings that go out. You can do that with the tensioner and the idler both, reinstall the OE parts and your good to go for another 100,000 miles. Great video!

Just bought a Dayco kit for my 2003 Taurus. I guess your video confirms I made the correct choice.

I replaced a stock functional dayco tensioner at 120k simply because it was due for replaced with the gates option. At 150k the tensioner started squealing…time to go back to dayco

Gates used to make good quality parts numerous years ago. They used to be the go to timing belt kits in the Subaru world. That was back when they sourced their parts from Japan. When they switched over to China they relaxed their quality standards and the parts are now what they are.

Weren't they sold off? There's plenty of quality coming out of China, Hengst, INA, Mahle

Cool video, wish I stumbled upon this sooner. I bought the gates kit from lots of people in the forum recommending them. But after watching your video I had no idea the quality differences are clear as day. On another note my factory alternator started squeaking at 66k which is what started me down this rabbit hole of wanting to replace all the pulleys and tensioners etc

For my Toyota cars and trucks I ONLY use actual Toyota brand serpentine belts or Mitsuboshi (NOT Mitsubishi, different Japanese companies) brand which is a supplier of belts to Toyota and Lexus.

I used a Gates kit for my Mitsubishi. It had a water pump because you have to remove the timing belt tensioner to replace it. The old pump had well over 100K on it and was in perfect condition. The new Gates pump lasted less than 40k before it went out.

Dayco supplies a great deal for the Korean manufacturers Kia & Hyundai. I always source Dayco for OEM parts in these brand of Asian vehicles.

Also the Gates keyhole to hold the tensioner spring is in a different location and makes installation more difficult. I will let you know how mine holds up just put a "new" one on and noticed all the same issues you did immediately :(

Thanks for a good detailed report KH - I presume the Tundra is our Australian Hilux - I’m researching the cost and brands options for replacing my 2010 Toyota Hilux Auto Diesel 4WD and is the pre-DPF series N70 - glad you were able to confirm what I found from others about Gates - I presume the stretching belt reputation for the DAYCO brand has been addressed? My Toyota dealership here in Australia sells the kit (no water pump) for around A$340 but on EBay the DAYCO kit sells for around A$150 locally sourced - if Toyota ‘brand engineers’ the DAYCO kit then that’s quite a markup.

No way the tundra is no where close to a hilux. The only north American Toyota close to the hilux will be the Tacoma and they are way different . I would research parts for your specific hilux . By they way us Toyota fans wish we could get our hands on a Toyota hilux

@@albono780 OK thanks Al - I’ll talk with local mechanics - us an update one told me they’ve had failures with the DAYCO idler bearing so I will go genuine Toyota with that part.

About to replace mine finally now. Really good to see someone bring this up before I officially replaced mine. Kinda wondering though you are replacing yours after so short of a time. I've gone over 300k before mine is now needing done.

Gates went from being made in Japan to China so the quality declined. I would trust Dayco over gates at this point.

That terrible. I have a 02 Tundra 4.7 and the Gates kit is made in Canada and indistinguishable from the OEM unit I pulled. Gates must be fumbling the ball.
