Excellent video and good instructions. My latch broke with the gate closed. On the 2011, you can remove the cover from the inside and pull the rods to open gate before starting replacement. thanks, robert

Glad you liked the video. Yes if you access the truck bed from the inside to under the access cover then yes you can easily replace the latch still. Where it sucks is for those folks that have a locked tonneau cover... those can be a bit of a pain to get into...

So, I was on a fishing vacation with my two sons and when we arrived at a lake to fish, I went to open my tailgate and discovered that my tailgate latch handle was broken...of course my tonneau cover was closed and I couldn't open my tailgate! A little disappointing since all the fishing gear was locked in the bed! Luckily we were able to push the tonneau cover enough for my son to sneak his arm in and unlatch the tonneau cover! Luckily for me I stumbled across this video and was able to fix it myself for cheap! I paid $25 for an aftermarket one on ebay! Thanks for the easy to follow "how to"! 👍

I'm assuming you're in the US. In Canada we kinda get screwed on good quality cheaper alternatives. The doorman equivalent branded latch cost just as much as the genuine toyota one so naturally I purchased a toyota handle assembly.

Will this process work if the tail gate is closed?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 5 жыл бұрын
That depends. Can you access the back of the tailgate? If you have a tonneau cover that is locked then you'll have to break into the truck bed first. If it is just stuck closed but you can get to it via the back then yes no problem taking it apart.

As long as you can access the screws to take off the lift gate cover then yes, you can do it open or closed. This only becomes difficult IF you have a locking tonneau cover on the bed that prevents you from getting into the truck bed.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, as long as you can get into the box then you can replace the handle while the tail gate is closed.

Permitted its cheap then nothing wrong with that. The factory toyota replacement handle was STUPID expensive for what it is. Makes me wonder if I wasted a bunch of money replacing the latch when I could've ordered one from rock auto for like 1/10th price.

Cool, looks easy as pie, the chevys arent as fun because you can't take that panel off....
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 5 жыл бұрын
really the chevy's have no rear removable panel? How the heck are you supposed to service the lift gate latch then? If I recall correctly even the Cadillac Escalade I did years ago had a latch access handle.
@csmith6237
@csmith6237 5 жыл бұрын
@@piercedasian well the escalade is an SUV with a plastic interior panel, so of course that can be removed. The silverados and Sierras have a solid tailgate. You service the latch by removing 3 bolts from the inside face of the tailgate which hold the latch in place and then popping out the plastic cover that surrounds the handle. It's just a tight space getting the latch rods and bolts back in place. Look up a Chevy tailgate on Google if you don't believe me..

Ah but I'm in Canada and everything here is like 10x more expensive. The ones I could find in my neck of the woods have no hole for the rear backup camera. Aftermarket was available but I'd save a whopping $20.00 so I opted to buy one from Toyota instead.

How about your braces?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 7 жыл бұрын
my braces are doing well, I get them off at the end of the summer so that will be a bittersweet moment when that time comes. I've had them on for so much of my adult life that it would likely feel weird to not have them on my teeth. I'll do an update video when I have some time although not much has changed a heck of lot other than my orthodontist trying to stabilize everything such that my teeth are where they should be the the braces come off.

Yeah up in my neck of the woods they said the Dorman one wasn't available even though I know you can order it from Rock Auto (though they didn't have ANY stock). What was even stranger was that the parts joint had a price for a Dorman but it sure as heck wasn't $55. It was almost as much as the Toyota handle.
