We've been using TP-link switches for years. We started with out with an TL-SG-1008E to tie our HP microservers to our unmanaged netgear switches and give our network L2 capabilities, and really liked the web management interface. Then we expanded the network, pushing the 8 port out to the periphery and replacing it with a TL-SG1016PE as our core network switch, when we switched to a Ubiquiti Nano HD, and needed to power our VDSL router remotely from the UPS in the server cupboard. Then, when we ran out of GigE ports, we switched to a TL-SG1024DE as our core switch, and tied it to the TL-SG1016PE with 4 aggregated channels. One day we will upgrade to a 2.5G/10G core network switch, but for the moment more GigE is a better fit, given that we have 1x 2.5G capable machine on our entire network, but 3 servers with quad GigE + iLO/iDRAC ports. Maybe by the time we get around to having more 2.5G machines, and 10G machines, the price of 10G will be more reasonable. All three of our current switches cost less than a 5 port 10G switch would cost today.

Go-to for the bag of tricks and helping hand: TL-SG105, not the 108. It can basically be powered (with the right adapter cable, ~2$ from 'mazon) from a USB power brick, battery, or even a computer USB port. Quite handy to add to a computer on the go.

I have had mixed results with TP-link over the years either the managed switchs work or the don’t and once they do a hardware revision you can forget about firmware updates to patch security flaws and issues with the firmware. There unmanaged switches with Poe for me have just worked for the most part.

The TL-SG3428X is an awesome 24 Port Gigabit switch since it has 4x 10GBe SPF+ ports. Absolute overkill for most networks, but in my case pairing it with the 2.5GBe switch you have in your video (TL-SG3210XHP-M2) makes it pretty worth it when it comes to non blocking capacity.

Great Video. Little overwhelming for me. So I live in southeast alaska, been waiting over a year but finally got Starlink. Went from 5-7 down to 330 down 35bup. I need a Ethernet hub that will be good for years. Apple TV, security cameras, Mac computers. 5-8 ports should be ok. Which model do you recommend that will be fast and a little future proof. Thank you!

I already tried the TL-SX3008F and it does NOT work with 10GBase-T transceivers. I need to use that for my copper ethernet in the walls. Switched to a Unifi Switch Aggregation (8-port) and all is well, even with Unifi's 4 copper transceiver power limit (*see their data sheet) since I only need two 10GBase-T ports and everything else can be DAC or fiber transceivers. Even so, I do like TP-Link's 8-port RJ45 1-GB switches and use them around the home since they cost less than Unifi's older 8-port models.

Any comment on mixing and matching TP-Link switches into a managed UniFi environment? I'd love to get some 10g uplinks between a couple of areas where 1g is not quite cutting it, without getting into really expensive UniFi 10g-capable switch upgrades all around... but will UniFi management still "see" devices (and even other Unifi switches) plugged in on the other end of non-UniFi switches?

We just finished ripping all the TP Link switches from our office network. At one point we had about 10 of their "Smart Managed" switches in production. They switched packets just fine, but their interfaces (GUI and CLI) were just too inconsistent across the different models. The CLI was close enough to Cisco's syntax, so I could fumble my way through managing them, but I would always have to do a 'show config' before making a change to make sure of the syntax it wanted. The GUI worked okay on most of them, but one particular model it was painfully slow to load. To be fair/honest, I prefer a CLI over a GUI, so I very rarely used the GUI anyway. Some of the switches we had also supposedly supporting stacking, and the stack did work with an otherwise empty configuration. But once I put in the full configuration, the stack would never come together after a reboot. It didn't matter what ports, topology, or connections (10Gb fiber vs. DAC) I used for the stack, it just wouldn't come together. I ended up rearchitecting that part of the network to use them as individual switches instead of a stack. They also supported basic layer 3 routing, which generally worked. But the switch that was doing the routing would just randomly stop routing (but still kept switching packets in their respective VLANs). The only fix for this was a power cycle. The final nail in their coffin for us was the complete lack of firmware updates for any of the switches we had. A few weeks ago, I pulled the last one out of production. PS - No disrespect to you Chris, but this video very much sounded like a paid advertisement for TP Link. I trust that it wasn't though, because you are always very clear when you are using something paid/provided/sponsored by a company/vendor.

I like the TL-SG108E. It's a great switch that can be VLAN'd. I have purchased about 20 of them over the last few years (Hardware versions 1 through 6). All of them have stood the test of time! Beware of the TL-SG3210HP-M2! Initially I thought this was a great switch, packed with awesome functionality. That is until my first one bricked itself on reboot and was RMA'd. Now the replacement has done a similar trick and is getting RMA'd! Not sure how the third one is going to behave.

Given that I can't get an ES-16-XG for love nor money since Ubiquiti have abandoned the entire Edgeswitch line (despite protestations to the contrary) I need to find a decent 10Gb SFP+ aggregation switch like the ES-16-XG. These TL-SX3016F seem like they may fit the bill. Anyone else had experience with hooking one of these up to a bunch of Edgeswitch 48's? Already have a bunch of Ubiquiti MM SFP+ modules to us eon them. All I really need is Link Aggregation and the ability to make the ports Trunk ports to pass all my vLANS through.

Hi Chris. Before you recommend the TL-SG1016PE switch to the world. I would ask, have you actually had hands on use of this switch.? I ask, as they seem to have a fault. I ended up having to replace 2 of these switches that were used in 2 Let properties to provide network switching and POE for smart TVs and Unifi Access Points. 3x AC-PROs and the other 4x AC-Lites. They were installed by another "IT network" electrician. They work for a while then cause the network to loose Internet connection. You reboot. They work again for a while, sometimes in the weeks. Then loose connection again. All the devices can't access the Internet via the APs. Both properties were affected. I was sent in to find out why. I discovered it was the switches. I also did some online research and found out lots of others have this same issue with this switch. Just wanted you to know. Didn't want you to get in hot water from recommending a faulty item. I'm not dissing all TP-link switches. I have been testing for months now a TL-SG2210P, without issues. Also an ER605 router. Their AC omada APs..... Not so good. The AC1350, lots of wifi disconnecting and other issues. And very disappointed in the In wall eap235 in wall. Very limited 5G bandwidth available in UK. Just the Lower end of the 5Ghz band. 1x80ghz channel. Useless for dense environments. So. Good and bad. Now looking at Aruba instant on for these type of APs. As alternative to unifi. With supply issues, etc. Hope this heads up on the 16port switch helps. Regards Mike. UK.

When you think about it, the only difference between all switches (managed or unmanaged, L2 or L3) and routers with all their various features is the firmware that runs on them. There is really no reason a LAN port on a switch cannot be the WAN port. I can understand the processing power in such devices would dictate their function, but a switch with a reasonable powerful enough CPU can be programmed to act as a router/switch combo. This can be seen with pfSense. Its software can run in various devices as long as the CPU can handle the calculations. I think it’s a scam that manufactures telling you to buy new routers and switches because their old hardware “cannot” run the latest FW. This throw away planned obsolescence has created so much e-waste. I have TVs made 25 years ago that still work. Why can’t the same applies to switches and routers?
@EvanIIRC

I don't think that's necessarily true. I don't think all ports are created equal and have some hardware differences in some cases, especially if switching is done in hardware vs. processed.

It does, there is difference between l2 and l3 performances, just check price of l3 switches versus big routers. CPU routing is for smaller amounts of traffic, switches and bigers routers are using ASICS, cpu is for control plane. Is your 25 year old tv working with hdmi, with receiving local tv signal?
