Some additional context &/or explanation for those less familiar with *[Critical Role Campaign #1 - Vox Machina]* (VXM) especially to the scale of power(s) for this scene from *[CR 1x63 - "The Echo Tree"]* between Artagan and the VXM crew... *:)* 1.) *_Who is Artagan the Traveler?_** --* Artagan the Traveler (played by Dungeon Master Matt Mercer) is one of the immortal ArchFey lords of the Feywild realm/dimension in the D&D 5e _Exandria_ multiverse. In his "true/default" form, Artagan is a broadly androgynous elf-like being, nominally _Male_ for simplicity of reference; however, Artagan is a shapeshifter, so gender means little (if anything) to Artagan. 2.) *_Power Levels and Limits_** --* As an ArchFey, Artagan is *VERY* powerful in terms of raw power, only a few steps below godly power; thus depicted in animation by Artagan's starry-filled eyes [8:05]. However, Artagan is limited in scope and use of those titanic powers and power reserves. Artagan cannot grant wishes/prayers, or go around blowing up stuff &/or people at a whim/desire/hatred. At least, not directly... 3.) *_Followers_** --* As with most powerful and immortal beings, ArchFey generally have mortals that serve them... - a.) *ArchFey Pact -* The most common/direct method for ArchFey to dole out their vast power, for use towards their ArchFey purposes/goals, is to form a *_Warlock Pact_* with mortal creatures. However, Warlock Pacts are an _Arcane_ empowerment (bards, sorcerers, warlocks, wizards), not _Divine_ (clerics, paladins), nor _Nature/Primal_ (barbarians, druids, rangers). - b.) *Conventional Means (& Ends) -* ArchFey also have many willing Followers, cultivated Assets, and manipulated pawns; all without an ArchFey needing to spend any of their own power reserves. No need for an ArchFey to expend their power reserves when they can recruit via conventional methods such as gold, information/knowledge, magic item(s) rewards/upgrades, simple (non-magical) charm, traded favors, even earnest Friendship/Loyalty/Love (i.e.: many an Adventurer has done tasks/favors for "uncles/aunts" that their family has known for as long as they can remember...), and countless other conventional methods/resources available to immortal beings. 4.) *_Artagan vs. Vox Machina (VXM)_** --* So with this scene from *[CR 1x63],* Artagan was walking a careful road in his interactions with VXM... - a.) [2:45] *- [Artagan]: That's adorable! -* The VXM crew had *ZERO* chance of containing/harming Artagan. As shown, Keyleth's (Marisha Ray) _Hold Person_ (spell) was not even worth Artagan pretending it might have any effect. As for Scanlan Shorthalt's (Sam Riegel) _Otiluke's Resilient Sphere_ (spell), Artagan could have easily escaped (ghosted out, phased out, teleported out, etc.), or even *FORCED* his way out directly (neutralizing the _Resilient Sphere_ via _Disintegrate_ spell); but it suited Artagan's purposes to act as if temporarily contained (the _Resilient Sphere_ lasts 1 minute, or as long as the _Resilient Sphere's_ spellcaster actively maintains the _Resilient Sphere_ past 1 minute), and parley with VXM. - b.) [3:35] *- [Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham)]: We left an empty grave inside, it's got your name on it if you don't talk. [Artagan]: pfffft... -* _"If"_ Artagan had been forced to directly combat VXM, Artagan would have almost certainly mopped the floor with VXM. The counter-balance being that Artagan knew that antagonizing VXM would be counter-productive and valueless. Remember, at this [CR 1x63] scene's time, Artagan *_WANTS_* VXM to succeed in their efforts against The Chroma Conclave. 5.) *_The Traveler (Exandria deity)_** --* Later, in his travels about the Prime Material (mortal) Plane of _Exandria,_ Artagan would come across a lonely little Tiefling girl named Geneieve "Jester" Lavorre (Laura Bailey), becoming Jester's "imaginary friend" (note "quotations") and cultivate a strong bond with Jester. To even Artagan's immortal surprise, Jester's purehearted devotion to Artagan would have a literal transformative effect upon Artagan. On one hand, Artagan would capitalize off the rush of newfound power(s), while also using Jester as one of his chief Assets/Operatives. On the other hand, Artagan genuinely adores Jester and cares deeply about Jester's well-being (physical, emotional, spiritual), regardless of the added power(s) that Jester has brought to Artagan.
