One of these grills just didn't want to come apart even with a 20 Ton press, or 350 Degree heat, or several hits with multiple hammers, or vice grips and pliers. I bet you'll never guess what actually worked. Don't give up! Watch how I restored and polished these delicate Porsche grills! It's like a comedy of errors, ha ha.

Sometime an expected small job takes the longest time. I am enjoying watching the amount of work put into the car. Enjoy your vacation in a climate much different from southern California.

So many little things that can go wrong. They certainly don't make new cars with this kind of quality or detail!

Slow and steady! I’m going through a Similar process on my Aluminium dash trim getting rid of scratches and nicks- 320 grit, 600 grit, 1200 grit, 2000 grit then polish! Have fun in Norway.

Great job on sticking with that stuck rod...lots of frustration but a great result. After my grills were cleaned, polished and assembled I had them clear ceramic coated at some shop in the L.A. area. That was over 8 years ago and they look exactly like they did when they came back from the coater. The clear ceramic coating looks very close to the original finish with the anodized layer.

You have read my mind. Was thinking of superglue. But I was thinking a nut or sorts. Then acetone soak to clean

Super glue was the only thing that worked. Sometimes the glue failed before the rust broke loose, but eventually it all came apart. Have you ever used superglue activator? It instantly dries super glue.

@@GarageTimeAutoResto I have not used the activator. But have used SG to open screw back pocketwatch cases that wouldn’t budge

They really look nice. Will you seal the aluminum with anything after polishing? I polished one but it quickly lost the shine. I think it still looks good, it’s just not polished any longer. Enjoy your vacation.

Tom, I have early cars that DO NOT have screws and nuts holding the grill together. As you probably know, these grills are held together by "swaging" the cross pieces to the "surround". Do you have any tricks for taking these apart and reassembling them? Thanks, Dan M.

I have never tried to disassemble the earlier grills. I've read that others have taken them apart with pliers and clamps, but that seems risky. I know the aluminum is very soft, so that is in your favor.
