Dr. Michael Bauer of Colorado Canine Orthopedics discusses Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery for canine Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears. You'll learn about healing and recovery following TPLO surgery.
Dr. Bauer is a board certified veterinary surgeon and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He shares his thoughts on canine ACL repair and TPLO surgery. Dr. Bauer has performed thousands of canine ACL surgeries.
At Colorado Canine Orthopedics, virtually all animals walk out of the hospital the day of TPLO surgery. Weight bearing is permitted immediately. Most dogs start using the leg within a day or two of their TPLO surgery; many use the leg that evening. Sutures are buried and do not require removal. An E-collar, also known as the cone of shame, should be used for seven to 10 days when your dog is unsupervised. Icing is helpful for a few days following surgery. Physical therapy, both at home and at a physical rehabilitation center aids the healing process. Passive range of motion and massage are examples of beneficial therapies demonstrated at discharge.
Following TPLO surgery, most dogs are quite comfortable. The surgeons at Colorado Canine Orthopedics find TPLO patients to be more comfortable following surgery than following many other procedures. This comfort is, in large part, due to the stability afforded by today's bone plate technology. The bone/plate/screw combination provides better stability than any other repair on any other type of tissue. Oral pain medications are helpful for 2-6 weeks following surgery.
Upon returning home after a TPLO, your dog should be restricted to the house with short leash walks initially, progressing to longer and longer walks as weeks go by. Stairs are usually permitted with supervision. The TPLO is one of the strongest repairs in all of veterinary surgery, but squirrel chasing and excessive rough-housing should be avoided.
The skin will heal in about 10-14 days, but the bone takes months to heal completely. While bone takes longer to heal, it heals stronger than any other connective tissue in the body! Complete bone healing takes about three months but varies from animal to animal and is somewhat dependent on the dog's age.
Once healed, nearly all dogs return to full function. Without doubt, 95 percent of dog owners are satisfied with long-term results of a TPLO.

Had our dogs done 2 days ago, wow the bruising is huge, hardest part keeping him contained and having stairs carrying a 34 kg dog is exhausting. We know he had some arthritis already .

PROBLEM for us in Sweden is the cost we did a TPLO so far we spent about 10 000 US dollar. a lot of the money had to come from our savings account

This was a great video. Our 113 lb Cane Corso Mastiff is on week #2 of her 2nd TPLO (she had the other leg done 1 year ago). That dog running and playing is definitely what our dog has done all summer and fall. She will do it again too! The recovery is not at all bad, especially the 2nd go round.

Thank you for this video! Our dog is 3 days post op with a bi-lateral TPLO and it's been hard but so worth it. My only concern is, the amount of arthritis because it took is a few years to save the money for the surgery. I am hoping that his quality of life will be much improved and am hopeful that this will have him in less pain than before!

Thanks for the great information. Our dog has just had his second knee repaired and he's feeling great eight days post-op. My husband and I are very happy we decided to move forward and have his second leg repaired. We look forward to many good years for our dog.

Yes for sure! My 10 year old Shorkie! Worked for her! TPLO right leg! The other leg (left)t ACL tear at 8 year was done by the suture repair. I would not recommend it, suture repair, wear on the legs and scar tissue! I am definitely considering getting the TPLO done on the left (to fix the suture repair from the previous vet who did a bad job. Dr Barton Meadows, the best there is for for TPLO! Port Huron Fort Gratiot Michigan! Thank you for sharing Cheryl Michigan

Thank u very much dear doctor for sharing your knowledge with us, hearing its only 12 weeks makes me feel better, i have done my dog tplo in my country and now i am waiting for the dog to heal. My advise for everyone that has a dog with tplo is to have the dog contained in a small cage where it can only take a few steps so it will not run if sees a cat or anything to make him/her run , not walking on steps, not jumbing, the cage must have very short ceiling so it cant jumb and the cage must not be slippery like most dog crates, i have a dog crate and i have put on the floor some strong carton boxes so it will not slip, anything to put there that doesnt slip is okv except lets say a carpet that produces heat and the dog will not like in summer period, when the dog is out of the cage always be careful and have him in a short lease because you never know what will make trigger the dog to run, show the dog love, affection, good quality pet food with some cooked fresh meals because dogs love fresh meals but also need the vitamins and mineras of pet dog foods, dont give cooked bones to your dog, follow the instruction of the vet that made surgery your dog and leave your dog to rest for at least 5 minutes when you take the dog for a walk and last buy him a belly belt to help the dog stand up

Really interesting video. My little 20-pound Bichon-poodle had TPLO about 3 weeks ago. He still limps occasionally, but in general he's doing really well. I'm trying hard to decrease the amount of activity he gets, but it's so hard! He's not allowed to jump on or off of furniture anymore. I pick him up and put him in the car. I pick him up and take him out of the car. I used to walk him with a 15-foot leash so he could chase squirrels in the neighborhood. Now it's just a 5-foot leash to stop him from explosive running--but the little guy still tries! My main concern now is that a vet tech noticed a seroma at the top of the incision when the staples were removed, so my regular vet prescribed some antibiotic--not Simplicef but something more broad spectrum, to help reduce the possibility of a major infection. I am a bit concerned about that, but hopefully the antibiotic will prevent any serious infection while the seroma heals. Is the metal plate with screws usually left in there even after the bone heals? Are there occasions when the surgeon will want to remove the metal plate? Any risk of metal toxicity to the dog because of the long-term presence of the metal plate in the body? Thanks for sharing! By the way, I like your necklace! What is it made of?

my 175 lb dane just got hom 12 hrs ago from his first one. he torn both acls and miniscus. he is drugged up to the max. and since he has both legs that are damaged it is going to be a long haul for recovery. we just got him up to pee, he did pee inhis sleep. but this is very hard. it isnt like we can just pick him up and carry him. vet said 4 months recovery then we have to do the other leg. dont know if i can put him thru that after only 12 hrs post op. with 2 bad legs it is much harder but we rescued him and are going to do whats best. we went the brace route first per vet- and i would have shipped that time lost and gone for surgery first and saved him more pain. lets hope everything goes well. they put wedge after removing all miniscus so it am sure that makes it more intense with pain. thank you for this.

This and your other videos are fabulous. I wish had seen them before my dogs surgeries. My question, is, several years later, my Great Dane's right rear TPLO has been damaged/re injured? We will find out why/what is going on tomorrow. My question is why isn't a knee brace sent home after surgery? Why isn't a brace recommended for continuous support? I understand the cost of these braces are high. But so is surgery. Why isn't a brace recommended before surgery as an alternative/wait and see alternative?

My 2 year old GSD just had a dual TPLO this last Thursday, and she actually is being really good about being crated, but I’m concerned about the first healing of the flesh. I was told about 3 weeks for minimal movement, so she only goes out to go potty, but how will this affect her muscle mass? Will she develop atrophy in that short amount of time?

My dog had tplo surgury 8 weeks ago. She yelped at around 5 weeks into recovery. After going in for the last x ray it turned out that her plate cracked? What should I do? The surgeon said it is fine but I can't find anything saying that it is. It is now been 4 months and her front left leg is now limping and she can hardly walk now. She had already her back right leg fixed?Ideas?
