This comment is 8 months late but maybe it'll be useful to someone- You can check the exact color an artist uses in multiply for the shadows by using the divide blend mode! Just pick the base color and use it on top of the shadows and you can use the color that comes out in multiply to get the same shadow color! I'm terrible at explaining but hopefully it was understandable

This works because the multiply and divide blend modes are literally multiply and divide, so divide can reverse the effects of multiply if applied correctly. PS: the blend modes are applied with RGB components at 0.0 to 1.0, not 0 to 255 which is why multiply doesn't result in a blown out image and why divide does.

There is so many wonderul artists out there with their own various techniques that they might employ. I truly believe that there is joy and personal achievement to be had in understanding them, and then later applying this knowledge with your own hand.

Yeah! Although one video doesn't do justice to the artist's style, I wanted to share this because I had so much fun and learned a lot from trying to figure out how the artist does this and that 😁

I have seen ASK/ Asuka sensei's interview with Pixiv, its still on Pixiv channel and from what I remember is that they try to avoid using blending mode like multipy to keep the colors natural so I assume that the color you couldn't find was hand painted instead of a blending mode

As someone who spent most of thier life painting traditionally its hard for me to notice a lot of things that some of my favourite artists do digitally, your videos are really helpful for me, especially since most of the process instructions and guides I see artists that I like post on twitter are normally in another language haha.

This is absolutely fascinating! For once, the YT algorithm threw me a bone. I'm currently in a limbo where I don't have a consistent workflow as I'm bouncing from one awesome artist to another (recently it's been Boichi and Takehiko Inoue). I was recommended Pixiv's interview of ASK, which is probably why your video ended up on my main page. If I were to make a suggestion, I would love to see a similar artstyle/process breakdown of Akihiko Yoshida's and Hideo Minaba's work on Granblue Fantasy and Bravely Default (Though any of their works would suffice.) There seem to be a couple of artists that produce very similar work, so much so, that it was mistaken for theirs (they might be working under the same company). If it's of any help, I can research their names as it's been a while since I last looked for them. Thank you for taking the time to produce this content, really eases my mind to see others trying to improve by following their favorite artists as well.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Also, super relatable. I’m also bouncing from artists to artist, so I don’t really have a consistent workflow or style. Not sure if good or bad, but so far it’s been really fun to just explore. Granblue Fantasy’s artstyle is definitely on the study list for me. There’s actually a video on how to replicate Granblue Fantasy’s art style by Kakage (かかげ). Link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNdgiKh8lsCmnGQ.html. The video is in Japanese but other than that, I would say that his method is very clear and consistent for replicating Hideo Minaba’s style.
@VeylmanTheRock
@VeylmanTheRock 2 жыл бұрын
@@tppoart I thank KZfaq for not notifying me of your reply. I'm familiar with Kakage though I must have started following shortly after he produced that video. Either that or I missed it because of the japanese title. Will give it a look! Link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJyDiZSSyZqwpaM.html is a live drawing from Minaba and 2 assistants, though it's heavily edited and any other version I found is just too low resolution to be of use. I think what interests me most is the process that led these artists to where they are now. Like what did they actually do, day in and day out? How was their study constructed? So many people just say "practice lol" without providing a process. It's hard for me, as someone who used to only do the bare minimum (and waste the free time on mindless distractions), to go through with daily figure or gesture drawing. I think knowing what my idols did might help me to, through my obsession, do what needs to be done.

I think he had two versions naked and clothed and NERV was just masked out along with other parts where she's naked, so that's why shadows are in tact. At least it's my theory. Also love his works and did studies back in the day and will do again, great job.

Hi thank you very much for ur break down video! i learnt alot. But i have several queations, how do you find the base color, wht are u thinking when u choosing the base color? Then, why is the shadow on multiply layer is magenta not grey( the asuka illustration).
@tppoart
@tppoart 2 жыл бұрын
I usually pick desaturated colors for my base colors, then shift the hue and saturation as I go. So I don't try to pick the best colors, but to instead change them as I go. For shadows, I thought grey looked a bit boring so I made it a bit magenta that’s it hahahaha
