i would say that, when the trabant was released in 1959, it was a in line with times and even a bit modern car. but they produced it for about 30 years, and apart from the 1.1 trabant, they changed nearly nothin. ok, some more hp, changed the look and the interior, but the at least the car allways stayed the same. and thats the reason why the trabant is the trabant. in german we say: "planwirtschaft auf rädern" which means something like "state-directed economy on wheels" ;)

not sure about accuracy fo speedometer, on 3rd gear have you reached up to nearly 90km/h ? - the engine rewing over 5200-5400 rpm .., but sounds in level about 4500 rpm .... have you tried to measure car-speed with GPS ? (and compare to speedometer? ..) , regards Peter

At a guess, what you're saying is 29s to do the 0-100 sprint would have been impressive with those other cars, and it's particularly good for an old 600cc car, as is the 120km/h top speed? (Though I'm pretty sure the original versions claimed various Vmax figures between 90 and 110km/h and it didn't reach 120 til quite late on...) All very true, and I'd say this would still be fairly driveable on modern west-europe roads so long as you kept it revving hard...

Gesunder Motor! Das erste Auto, das ich gefahren bin... Mein Papa und ich haben den Zylinderkopf manchmal gereinigt - gegen Detonation, es gab viel Ablagerung - dann ging der Trabi flott, bis nach 1000 Kilometern wieder das unschöne Rasseln kam... Grüße aus Ungarn! This is one healthy engine! The first car I've driven... With my Father sometimes I cleaned the cylinder head from the inside - to avoid detonation, there was much crust of coal - after that the Trabi was fine but 1000 kms later you could hear that bad tinkling sound. A lot of people hate the Trabant and label it the worst car ever made... Or just mock it for it's pathetic performance, but fail to see one thing... One thing they should respect the Trabant for... Back when these came out, you didn't have much of a choice when it came to cars. It was either this, motorcycles, bicycles and public transport... The Trabant gave you freedom. It had 4 seats, a trunk for your luggage, a heater to keep you warm and kept you away from the elements. Nowadays an average family car will do the 0-100 in about 9-10 seconds and there are many affordable second hand cars that are a lot faster. Mine is a 2007 E420 CDI Mercedes, modded to 400hp, she'll do the 0-100 in under 6 seconds. But back then there were no bargain luxobarges, no tuning, no nothing. So I respect the Trabant for getting people on the move. For giving people a little bit of freedom in the hell called communism. Cause in the end every car is about the freedom to go anywhere you want.

Two tests from the 1973 and 1982 stated it can speed up to the 80 km/h in 22 s and 45 s up to the 100 km/h with two person in (170 kg). You got it to the 80 km/h in 17 seconds.

Not everyone can own a Trabant, things you can't always have are worth more.Remember, it is very difficult to find a real Trabant on the market because they are all ruined.

I heard a lot of datas about ideal Trabi to speed. It can reach 120km/h but after 10mins the headgasket will burn off. The ideal is between 100 and 110 km/h.

ist eig. nur ein Drehzahlmesser , der da die SED führung damals auch aus Grünen bestand in ein Verbrauchsanzeige umgewandelt worden ist.

Tim Althoff Ein Drehzahlmesser? Nun ja, das Ding misst mittels optischem Drehzahlmesser den Durchflussmessers in der Kraftstoffleitung. So gesehen hast du Recht. Es wird jedoch der tatsächliche Spritverbrauch pro Zeiteinheit angezeigt. Davon gab es auch noch eine Version mit mehr LEDs, wo die letzten dann rot sind. Selten aber viel schöner und mit mehr Aussage. Im Inneren befindet sich der A277D, ein Microchip extra für LED den man noch heute kaufen kann. Man könnte sagen: Eine Berühmtheit!

Puuuh. Hast du 'ne Ahnung, welche Drehzahl du da auf deine Welle geworfen hast? Ich hab mal 'nen Drehzahlmesser angeklemmt. Glaub' mal das was du da gemacht hast war nicht ohne. bei 4200 ist eigenlich Schluss. Du müsstest irgendwo bei 5000-5200 gewesen sein.

Wie der Motor auf einmal Umdrehungen jenseits der Werksangaben erreichen kann?

Nun die Werksangabe bezieht sich hier auf das, was für den Motor am zuträglichsten ist. Nenndrehzahl heißt nicht das, was der Motor in der Theorie leisten könnte, sondern das, was für den Motor freigegeben ist. Immerhin hat der Trabant ja auch keinen Drehzahlbegrenzer. 4200 bei 100. Das ist die Werksangabe für die Höchstgeschwindigkeit. Jetzt achte das nächste Mal auf die Drehzahl deines Motors wenn du im vierten Gang 100 fährst. Dann schalte mal bitte bei 80 runter in den dritten. Dann wirst du was feststellen, undzwar, dass der Motor viel schneller dreht als bei 100 im Vierten. Mach' dir doch mal den Spaß, nimm irgendein Drehzahlmesser und klemm' ihn an die Klemme 1 von einer beliebigen Zündspule. Dann kannst du ja selbst nachmessen. Könnte nur passieren, dass er genau die hälfte oder das doppelte anzeigt. Immerhin zündet ein Zweittaktmotor ja doppelt so oft. Aber heutige Autos haben einen Verteiler. Also immer ein wenig umdenken bei der Sache.
