Mount St Bernard's Abbey in deepest Leicestershire, is a local landmark, that most people in the county know about.
But what some people may not know (including myself, until Friday afternoon) is that there was a Monastery built before the current one in 1835, and in 1856 was converted into a reformatory, or a young offenders institution up until the 1880's.
The current Monastery was built in 1844.
I was told that there wasn't anything left of the original Monastery building, which, unfortunatly there wasn't, but, there was still quite a bit to go and have a noseh at! I was actually pleasantly suprized at what i found today.
Anyway, if you enjoyed this video, please like, subscribe and share, and i will see you at the next one!
Cheers, Steve...

Great video Steve. The history of the reformatory is fascinating, I wrote an article on its back in the 1980s. As you say the monks were not really able to cope with the boys and Abbot Burder, who initiated the Reformatory, eventually had a breakdown, the Pope himself sent three commissioners to resolve the problems, by this time Abbot Burder had returned from his breakdown but was asked to resign. If you’re interested in the history let me know.

Spent a bit of my childhood playing in that area ()school holidays etc) as my relations lived in Hillside Cottage and the bungalow behind this area. Remember the wooden crosses and heard it was burial site of children. Knew nothing about the old monastery. Absolutely fascinating video, thanks Steve

Very interesting Steve. are you aware of the WW2 beam bender building On Oaks Road, wear the wall with the door is at the bottom end. St Josephs. You can see it in the sheep field, it was used to house a WW2 Beam Bender, to confuse German bombers from their targets.
@LeiceExplore

Thank you. Yes, I’m very familiar with the beam benders. When I was a child, I thought the structure was just another agricultural building until I learnt of its true identity years later.
