Track pads and brake fluid and you should be good to go - no need for upgraded rotors/calipers unless you plan to make this a purpose built track car. If there’s still room in the budget after pads/fluid, spend that on tires and suspension.
@nealokelly
@nealokelly Жыл бұрын
He warped his discs. Pad and fluids wont make a difference to that. The more metal you drill/flute out, then less likely they are to stay intact. Making them hot and then driving through a puddle [quenching bath] is not going to result in a great outcome. Any component that is optimised for the track is, by definition, not optimised for longevity.

I had wooden blocks for brakes, put in brembo pads, massive road difference first touch and progressive brake feel, but on track 3-4 laps massive wheel shake, cool brakes felt good same at 3-4 laps. if yo want beyond road pads you loose road feel, first touch and progressive feel. to sum up I stopped track days and enjoyed the everyday on brembo.

I have exactly the same, late 2002 S manual, done my first track day a couple of weeks back. I put Ferodo ds2500 pads in the front, changed the brake fluid to dot5.1. Done three 20 minute sessions perfect with no fade, lovely balanced cars on the track 👍🏼
@nealokelly

Okay, but 5.1 is not going to prevent brake fade. Indeed 5x fluids are slightly more prone to it than 4x fluids.

Great video Joel. For the track you need racing brake fluid and track/road pads. You should be fine then. 👍😁

The brake judder is caused by the brake pads leaving deposits on your discs when they get to hot, which causes the vibration. EBC yellow stuff will probably suit you for road/track use.

Juddering is pad deposit from the road brakes overheating. EBC yellow pads and some 5.1 fluid are my go to for sorting road car brakes for track use.

I just bought a Z4 finally! Can’t beet that 6 cylinder tone. Would be interested to see some more track features or videos. Can’t wait to get mine on the track! However, one concern maybe others share - is not having a fast enough car or not going fast enough. (I’ve never done a track day before). Great content!
@DanSallis
@DanSallis 2 жыл бұрын
I track my Z4 and the two most important things to get done immediately (preferably before taking to the track) are brakes and alignment. Brake pads need upgrading to a more track oriented compound (nothing excessive) and fluid needs to be a decent high temp DOT4 or DOT5.1. In terms of alignment, almost all stock BMW alignments are annoyingly understeer biased for safety reasons on the road. With zero toe front and rear and more front camber (a lot more) the car is far more neutral/slightly oversteer biased. Once these two have been done its an absolute pleasure on the track and the 3.0 that I have is usually around mid pace relative to other cars on all the track days I have been on. So definitely no slouch!

You just need some proper pads and fluid, I don’t think standard road stuff is really up to that sort of punishment. The cool down lap is vital too, the temps they get up to on a track day, when you come in and leave it parked up, the bits that have the pads up against them cools slower than the rest of the disc which can lead to warping. Looks amazing though, have a Boxster myself, haven’t been brave enough to track it yet, maybe next spring!

@@GoldenCroc Because of how many similar cars engines have blown up when their owners have decided to track them! This is an old car with a high-mileage engine, even if the engine may be in remarkable condition for its age and mileage. Under normal-use road stresses, I don't think it's reasonable to have "every" confidence, let alone under track conditions. Of course, Joel's and your confidence may vary from mine, as confidence is largely subjective. Track day stresses are considered exteme conditions and also significantly reduce the longetvity of service items. Most road cars are not built to track. Proper track specials typically have uprated engine and other components, which should inform us of something noteworthy. Ever wonder why the warranty for most cars is voided if it's found the car has ever been on track? There's good reason for it. And that's when they're new. Confidence is a good feeling. Ideally, it should be well-founded. When someone says they have "every confidence", it suggests the absence of risk. No risk assessment for tracking this car would suggest no risk of any mechanical component failure, including the engine. My comment regarding the engine was intended as a friendly caution, based on knowlege of a significant number of engine failures in similar cars on track. My comment was further given in the context of Joel very recently giving the impression of a currrent lack of funds. Cars very much like this one have become a popular purchase with track days on a budget in mind. Problem is that the concept of track days on a budget is esssentially paradoxical. Moreover, I also doubt the recent inspection considered track use when the mechanic said the suspension work wasn't urgent. Tracking a car with suspension components known to be at the very end of their life isn't a good idea. There are potentially far greater consequences to tracking such a car than a blown engine, and which good brakes wouldn't prevent! I hope Joel reconsiders his "every confidence" and will enjoy the car nonetheless.

@@nigel.w Yeah, but engine wise I dont consider 130k to be that much, if they have been maintained well. Surprised to see them expire so often as you say, but maybe they havent been maintained well? That is considering modern engines if they dont have a design flaw dont really "wear out" all that much in most cases. But maybe the Boxster engine does have some flaws, I dont know. Cheers.
