Fun fact, the boiler Doyle is standing next to at 1:49 is the boiler off of CP 2816. This segment was filmed circa 2000/2001, and at the time, Doyle's crew had been hired as contractors to refurbish the 2816's boiler when she was being restored for the CP Steam program.

It would be a great honor to meet Doyle McCormack. And shake the hand of a man who dedicated his life to the preservation of our railroad history. I wish I wasn't 3,000 miles away and I was 20 years younger. I would have loved to have met & talked with this man. Thank you Doyle for all you've done.

I worked with Doyle for 2 years; he's like anybody else; ask him about welding Superheater Units in Altoona! He'll know who it is.

Awesome history! Glad to see the Daylight is still being preserved today with a very modern facility to boot. Also, that the P.A. will live on in Scranton PA at Steam town

...on my way to work, I passed over the freedom train on the 134 to 5 freeways by Griffith Park, LA. Thought there was a fire under the freeway. Made sure to see it on display the next day. next saw her in Sacramento, 'bout 8 years later, where I got to go into the cab & meet some of the crew.... not sure if Doyle was one of them, but would like think so. 4449 always has, & always will be, my favorite steam locomotive

Yep, he's an owner-operator. He owns and operates an ALCo diesel from Mexico. I wish he would restore and drive LIRR 39 on the Strasburg.

Thank you Doyle for your vision to restore the PA in Nickel Plate colors. The transition period in American railroading was a bittersweet time when steam was disappearing. But new attractive diesels in classic American design were appearing and it will be awesome to see the Bluebird showing the new generation the finest in passenger locomotives of a wonderful time in American history.

The commentary is incorrect, in Texas the Texas and Pacific 2-10-4 number 610 hauled the Freedom Train throughout Texas and a Reading Railroad T-1 class 4-8-4 pulled the train throughout the eastern seaboard. When she was on display at Milford, Connecticut I was put on duty by the Roadforeman of engines from New Haven Art Dowd as The new haven spare board didn't have any engineers rested and I almost fell over when I was ordered to take AFT-1 and tool car to Devon tower turn and water and coal her on Waterbury 2 then come out and sit west of the tower on mainline 2 until called. I got to run her to New Haven, Ct. And it ran fine. I was replaced at New Haven as she was going to Providence, Rhode Island for her next show. The SP 4449 did not as the commentary stated haul the train throughput the US. Good memories.

I love the black scheme way better than the Orange, Red, and Black scheme. I know black looks boring, but Black makes look like a Cadillac.

what paint scheme is it currently running?
@silverstatehighiron7 жыл бұрын
Charlie Giordano Currently it's in the original Daylight paint scheme. Hasn't been in BNSF paint since 2002. In 2002, it wore American Freedom Train paint to honor victims of 9/11. It wore that until 2004. In 2004, it returned to Daylight paint.

Great video about an amazing machine, however, 840,000 lbs engine weight not hardly! the engine and tender loaded combined don't weigh that much! a bit fuzzy on the details huh?

Yep, he sure did.... When they made the movie that was released back in 1986, they wanted to have a real engineer working as an actor instead of an actor working the role of engineer. They figured that would be far less expensive.
