Maxsa Escaper Buddy - amzn.to/2SsmgWc
MaxTrax - amzn.to/2wLNZZo
I recently had the opportunity to try out a set of USAction Trax and compare them to my Maxsa Escaper Buddy recovery boards that I have had for the past 2yrs. Traction boards are extremely popular and range in price. After using the two I have came up with some important features to consider prior to making the decision on what traction boards to go with so that you can make the right decision for your off-road or overlanding build

Little trick that everyone should do when using traction boards: take a 12 foot lashing strap and tighten it on one of the handles of the board (each board should have a strap). Lay the nearly 12 feet of strap out to the side. When the board "draws" down and back into the mud or sand, you have a "leash" that remains visible and can be used to retrieve the board.

Lay that leash out behind you and tie it off to the trailer hitch and you wont have to walk back in the mud to get your traction boards.

I actually run a longer strap that I hook to my d ring so as soon as I pull out of hope keep momentum up and u don't have to walk and retrieve they simply drag behind the truck

I'm only pickin' nits here because I must say this was a great review. The only nit is that I'd have liked to have seen a NEW Maxsa instead of one that has been broken down by UV over the last two years. You are SPOT ON CORRECT that the Maxsa shouldn't have faded over time but we don't know exactly how the ActionTrax will respond over the same conditions. UV also doesn't just fade colors but can weaken plastics to make them more brittle. Beyond that, great vid with lots of nuanced comments on both products.

Maxtrax are my choice. They’re expensive but you get what you pay for. Maxtrax are fused with fibers when they’re molded and that’s what gives them their strength. Cheap boards don’t and flex and crack.

Awesome comparison and I think it was well thought out. I'm definitely leaning toward the Actiontrax. One thing that you (and everyone) should be aware of, is that when it comes to plastic, the red and orange pigments are the quickest to fade, which is why they look aged faster than other colors. This has nothing to do with the strength of the material, just that it will fade faster. This is true of anything that is red, actually, unless it has been clear coated. Back before clear coat was on all vehicles, red cars required more frequent waxing. Paint a house red, it will fade faster than the blue house next door. Black pigment is almost always made from carbon, which fades very little. It also tends to make a more flexible plastic than red or other colors. Hope that helps a little.

@@SirWilliamGoes yes but every invention is invented for the first time over and over and over. Every time a new person unaware of its existence maps out the blue prints within there minds eye and brings it to reality. My iteration of the invention consisted of a friend being stuck so ten minutes later with a couple 2x6 boards and a few one foot spikes hammered into the ground to keep the board into place. Personally I believe everything to be thought of or invented already exists. And anyone can pull from the ether of reality. People are amazing

Dude, sweet video. I'm glad you did a comparison between the lower cost boards. Personally I'm running the ARB TredPro's (the dual compound units) on my FJ. But I've been looking for a less expensive board for my Geo Trackers and as a secondary set for my off road trailer. Normally these board videos are ARB VS the "cheapos"... which I hate. ARB has their place (and I love them), but they are VERY proud of their products. I got the ARB's because of the warranty and my travel habits. Which means I tend to beat the crap out of equipment....so being able to make warranty claims has a value to the product. That being said....I've pulled a bunch of people out of spots they easily could have recovered themselves (less than 15 feet), if they'd had a set of boards (or just been less ..... let's not say stupid). These lower cost boards are getting better and better..... As the saying goes... It's better to have something, than nothing. I'm out west, so I deal with mostly sand, snow and stupidity. It's nice to see you putting these boards through that sticky clay soup you guys have back east. Keep the videos coming!

Great Video and I will subscribe!! I have wanted Maxtraxx for a while but at $400 Canadian, just too steep. I did get a set of Chinese knockoffs for Xmas and I will give them a try but your review has pointed out a couple very important things that I see are an issue with these knock offs. The stacking ability. They stack, but not tight like the ActionTrax or Maxtraxx. I can deal with that for storing them, but your example of carrying them and how the orange ones flared out making it harder to carry stood out to me. If you are having to crawl along using the treads over and over, you need something comfortable to carry. Thank for the great review. Actiontraxx are now on my NEEDS list.

So, question: with all the off roading you do, do you think you’ll try mud terrain tires next? Or are AT’s with traction boards enough for you?

I really like the ATs because I do more long term and long distance travel. The MTs are fantastic in mud but suffer in other areas with longevity and onroad characteristics being the primary areas they suffer. The ATs are great at everything except mud yet they still perform decent. I'll be doing a video soon on why I choose ATs. I won't say I'll never go with MTs but as of now I don't have the desire to.

I'm using the Maxsa Excaper Buddy. It got me out of a jam once. I think the Action Trax are a bit better and a bit more expensive.

Nicely done👍 We’ve owned the Maxsa boards and wasn’t impressed. The treads aren’t aggressive enough to grab tires. We might have to give the Action Trax a try.

Yeah lots of spin on the maxsa

I've probably used Maxsa boards 20 times and never had a problem with wheel spin. I doubt that the standard ,- maxtrax - is any more aggressive. If you use them correctly they work just fine.

Can they be used on concrete boat ramps to provide traction while retrieving your boat trailer?

They probably could but they may slide.

OK, you sold me, besides they work better for what they are designed to do. Often I have to carry them to another vehicle so their stack-ability allowing for easier handling is very appealing to me and makes it better for transporting them both on my truck and by hand to help someone else. Thanks, PS. And I can fight off those deep woods Sasquatches!!
