Electronic traction control is a relatively new feature on adventure motorcycles. Traction control systems are becoming more and more advanced and offer lots of customization. Eric and Iain from Touratech-USA are back to explain how it all works, when you should use it, and when you shouldn't.

Before buying a bike with traction control, I believe that everyone shall hone their skill on a standard bike. Nothing makes you a better rider than loose dirt and few falls. Master the figure of 8 on loose gravel with a bike fitted with 80/20 tires and then let's see who still needs traction control.

I love this channel! Another great clip, thank you! From my experience, TC is not a slam dunk on rocky climbs. On a R1200 GSA, Enduro Pro mode, climbing a steep and loose rocky section with TC activated, the bike slowed to the point where progress halted. Mid-climb I started slowing, so I kept opening the throttle, then changed down to 1st and kept opening the throttle... alas, I kept slowing. Deactivating TC was needed to make that climb.

Found myself in a similar situation on my tiger. Pumping the clutch got me enough power to get me over the hill where I could then switch off the TC. Don't think I could have got going had I stopped on the ascent.

What year is your GSA? I have a 2017 Rallye and hope mine is newer enough to have an “improved” version of Enduro Pro. As much as they research these things, one would think that BMW woulda figured out that yes, we will take these bikes up steep off-road stretches, and duh, the bikes really do need to be able to climb up steep and loose stuff.

TC very well explained - well done. I find it interesting that the 2 new mid-size ADV bikes just out (Tenere 700 and KTM 790) have very different approaches to this. The T700 has no TC, simple ABS on/off, and more moderate linear power (70 hp). The more powerful, more expensive 790 has TC and many other bells & whistles. I think both bikes will sell well mainly because they are lighter in weight compared to the bigger 1200s etc. It will come down to personal preference and budget. Some people will like the simplicity of the 700. Others will prefer having the option of dialling up a TC system to a level that suits the terrain. I look forward to testing both when the 700 arrives in Australia.

The electronics work incredibly well on my 1290SA. The offroad traction control makes it not only effortless to get the rear end out sideways on the dirt, it’s virtually completely safe too. It simply won’t add extra power beyond the rear wheel spinning 2x the front wheel no matter how heavy handed you are. If you’re not so experienced offroad (ie don’t have much of a dirt bike background as I didn’t) it takes a bit of a leap of faith to start drifting the first few times, but I got used to it pretty quickly, it really is confidence inspiring when you’re on a 230kg fueled bike. Offroad ABS works even better, I don’t know how they get the front wheel to brake with traction so well offroad.

@@ronanrogers4127 thank you for the response! I grew up off road and still love getting sideways on corners.....but on the 1090....I'm thinking it'll be a bit different. What’s more, in a media environment of short content and shorter attention spans, being self indulgent at the beginning of of a piece that only a portion of your audience will be amused by isn’t that smart. If you want to add ‘colour’ do it at the end as a reward to people for watching and use it to build rapport with viewers and build subs. 👍🏻

If your traction control is like mine on the 690 Enduro R, it is not as refined setting wise. On road/Offroad TC either on or off. You will have issues on soft dirt hill climbs. The 690 will stall if TC is not turned off. Reason being as the back wheel spins (which you need to keep going) it rolls off the throttle and momentum is lost and bike stalls. As the video says, make sure you undesrstand how your system works and it's limitations.

Not all traction controls are equal. Try to go up a rocky hill on a Tiger800 xc, traction control will pretty much bring you to a dead stop before you're halfway up. No limited slippage, no amount of weight shifting will fix it... it just has to be turned off... The Xca has limited slippage but I haven't tried one. So... just saying... what you guys are saying is valid for the bikes you had, but really doesn't apply to all and would have been worth mentioning.

Interesting and informative, especially as I have little experience and knowledge of traction control. My one experience was being given a brand new AT to test ride and being told to turn the TC on off-road and go whatever speed I wanted. I didn't quite do that...but I did ride a hell of a lot better than my ability would have allowed me... My reaction to that was that I'd prefer to learn those skills myself than have the bike do them for me. For now, on a CB500X, I have little need for it. (A very forgiving bike with only 47Hp). Still I know a lot more about it now - thanks :)

Yeah unless they get seriously injured or die trying to get those skills. Safety devices and electronics are always better regardless of what "some " people say. I've heard the seatbelts might lock you in if the car catches fire way too many times. It's a similar argument since traction control is a safety device! It will let people improve their riding skills and turn off traction control after they get more confident on the bike as opposed to jumping into the deep end right off the bat and possibly getting hurt.

I think, but have not experimented enough, that maybe best with no TC or lowest TC (1 on scale of 1-9 on 790R) . I assume you just need grunt (spin) to get up momentum (speed) to get out and on top of the soft sand .... appreciate if anybody has tips / proven experience - thanks ! (chunky tyres also helps)

Is there a video out that Mototrek did on how to slide the back tire around on bike that have constant "on" ABS? I saw the video that Bret did with the BMW and the Honda AT, but I couldn't afford either of those bikes so I need help learning how to do something I grew up doing on every bike I rode except my Moto Guzzi 750 Ambassador. My first downvote for a Mototrek video. I haven’t seen such a condescending video from a supposedly training site. My complaints: 1) You say @1:22, “...if you can’t read your owners manual...” well, my owners manual has about one paragraph on traction control. It states what it is, not how or when to use it. 2) You explain what traction control is but doesn’t explain when to use it or when to completely disable it (this is what the manual covers). I know how but not when to use it. It mentions either on or off, but not settings 1, 2 or 3. Big difference. Please stop the condescending videos. I’m here to learn and don’t need turn-off smart-assed comments

This stuff is fine on the street; but is completely crutch and very intrusive offroad. ABS will have me rolling into trees the way I ride (from experience).

That surprises me. The offroad ABS setting on my KTM 1290 SA works incredibly well, it works so well that I can’t really understand how it enables me to slam on the front brakes riding on both dirt and gravel without skidding (the rear can lock up). I can use the front brakes going down very steep hills offroad and on dirt and gravel tracks. I had gen 1 ABS on my R1100GS in the late 90s,and it used to pulsate and actually not brake at all. The KTM system is incredibly effective. The offroad traction control is brilliant as well...I’ll often hit 140-145 km/h on dirt and slide the back end out like these guys say

@@ronanrogers4127 I ride a '16 690; whichever gen abs is on it will let you roll right off a mountain while giving you a foot massage. I was chasing a dirt bike buddy one time through some single track and just about plowed a tree.

Dale Jahnke Hi I had similar experience on my new KTM 790R ... it was pumping through some mountain dirt roads and nearly had a few accidents on corners and had street mode ABS on ... learned I must have ABS set to off road mode which is NO ABS on rear and front ABS with lean angle disabled. not sure what modes the ‘16 690 has. The 790 is fantastic plus Rally mode with throttle response modes and dial up and down traction control on the fly

Not on my 1290SA. I believe you can go sport mode with offroad ABS.

the new 790R has a Rally mode that gives you separately selectable throttle (street offroad or rally which is as aggressive as sport on their other bikes) and 9 levels of TC that you can change on the fly. levels 7-8 are about the same as “offroad mode” TC.

Is it necessary to have traction control

Traction control on dirt is bullshit, I cant drift my 1200 gs with it on, I cant climb steep mountain passes, Its a kill joy, traction control holds you back on dirt, learn to ride and handle on dirt, if its raining and I'm on Tar, I leave ABS and TCS on.Dont believe the opinion in this video entirely, I cant climb a rocky hill with TRc on, it's ridiculous, I disagree with you guys on this one, If you climbing a tough loose rocky pass , and TRC comes on, you loose power and traction and will stall
