You are a rock star! I spent a couple hours tracing the wiring on my 5045D, removed the ignition panel, removed the starter solenoid wire, disconnected the neutral safety switch, neutral relay and was getting nowhere with my meter. Came back inside and did a quick web search and found a few similar questions but nothing definitive. Then I found your video. It was everything it could be; short and to the point. I was so certain you had provided me with the answer that I went out in my pajamas, unplugged the thermostat sensor, tested with my 12 volt light tester (I'd already smoked 3 fuses), replaced the fuse and fired the tractor up. It did smoke a bit at first, but that has been happening for about two years so I guess that sensor had been going bad for a while. It took me a few minutes to put everything back together, but I did it with a smile because it runs! And now I can sleep tonight instead of thinking about what could be wrong. If you're ever on the West coast of Florida I would be happy to buy you several adult beverages! Thank you!

I have a John Deere 5055D kept blowing fuse and I tried everything replaced a diode after talking to a JD service Manager assured that was the problem. checked every safety switch. I had about given up. My tractor had been down for weeks and a friend came over and he just thought it was a wire melted or bare spot grounding out. searched many videos and none helped then I came across your video went out unpluged the sensor and it cranked . Thank you so very much.

Let me join the fan club here and say that you also saved the day for us. Our JD 5045E mysteriously refused to turn over after trying to start it on a freezing morning last week. Battery was fine, but kept blowing starter relay fuses. Of course the troubleshooting guide in the manual is useless with handy suggestions like "no fuel" but no mention of the cold start advance sensor. Your video was all we needed, disconnected the sensor which was easy to find thanks to the video, put in another 10 amp fuse and it cranked right up. I found a new sensor on eBay for $15 and will install it when it shows up next week, thanks for the tip about the bucket to catch antifreeze leakage! In the meantime my wife's out cutting hay right now. Thanks again for posting this very helpful tutorial. 🙂

OK, this video just saved me literally hundreds of dollars. I've spent several hours taking the starter off and having it tested (it was fine), searching the wiring for an abrasion or break (found nothing), spoke to 3 knowledgeable auto mechanics and one tractor mechanic, learned nothing except you have to "just search for the dead short, it's there somewhere". SIGH! I was getting myself ready to call the dealer, having them pick up the tractor, spend probably 1500 to 2000 dollars to have them find the issue. At my wits' end I did what I should have done first-searched for "blown starter relay fuse on John Deere 5055e". Because when I did I found your video. I went to the tractor, disconnected the cold start advance sensor, replaced the fuse, turned the key AND IT STARTED! I can't thank you enough, you're the best! Steve in Nova Scotia

Thanks so much for posting this. My 5075e just had the same problem this morning. Found and swapped the blown fuse and it blew right away. Then i found your video, unplugged the sensor and it's working fine now. I can't imagine how much time and expense it would have taken to figure out what was blowing that fuse without you.

Your video just saved me time, money, and a whole lot of aggravation (putting it mildly)! I had the exact same problem. None of the professionals that I talked to (and I talked to several) ever suggested looking at the sensor as a possibility. As a side thought, I changed the coolant about a month earlier. Don't know if that played a role in the sensor going bad or not. Guess I'll never know. Thanks for saving my day!!!

Thanks man. My tractor had this exact issue. Started right up after I disconnected the sensor and replaced the fuse. Saved me $400!

I work at a John Deere dealership as a service technician. That is the cold weather timing advance sensor, and is literally not needed in warm climates where it might get below 30 mabye 3 times a year. My best advice is to snip the wire, and tape the connector away because that sensor will go out again, and is not needed. The tractor will just take a little longer to crank when it is cold.

Your procedure worked perfect on a 2011 5075e. Haven't ordered the new sensor yet but every step was perfect. Oh the fuses are mini's by the way. Thank you so very much!!

After a whole day of trouble shooting my 5303 with no luck on the cause of no crank. I found your video. Can't thank you enough. Disconnected the sensor, replace the fuse and it cranked right up and saved the day because I really needed to use my tractor. Also, on my fuse block the middle fuse for the starter relay is labeled " spare", go figure.

Like some others, I spent several hours troubleshooting my 5045D starter. After all, shouldn't the start relay be part of the starter circuit? Nope. I found when I pulled out the start relay inside of the fuse box, the start fuse would stop blowing but the tractor would then turn over but not start. Just when I was ready to give up I gave this tip a try. Sure enough, the tractor started right up! Saved me a big pain in the butt of loading up the tractor and taking it to a dealer,

I just bought a second hand 5083e got it home used it once and then wouldn’t start looked everywhere for an electrical fault and couldn’t find anything. Search up the YT and found your video, went out disconnected one of the sensor ports, tried to restart blew the fuse had another look and second sensor port disconnected that one reconnected the other and tractor starts. 🎉🙏🙏👍🏼🇦🇺

Thanks. I have a 2007 5103 and it just shut off while idling yesterday. On my JD that fuse is labeled spare. It just kept blowing. Disconnected the thermostat sensor, replaced the fuse again, and started right up. Got me out of the field. I'll replace the sensor now that I know what was up. I appreciate the video!

I'm blowing fuses and I do not want to have to go threw that bird's nest of wires in there all day long! I have put almost all new parts on this tractor (D140). Selenoid, battery, PTO switch, Key switch, Coils, plugs, gas filter, air filter, gas pump and a new PTO clutch. As well as eliminating all safety switch's. Oh yeah it has all new spindles on the deck! Last fall the blades stopped while mowing. At first I could get them on again but they would stop working after a few minutes and then it got to where I could not get them working and even had trouble starting the tractor. So I just put it away for winter and now I got this mess in the spring. I got it running with some of those new parts and battery.....but then after mowing three yards on my street I could not get it started after it sat for a while. And I found I was blowing fuses!

Thanks For the Tip! I replace the ignition switch on my 2007 5203. Helped a litte but still blowing through fuses. Did you know that John Deer was charging 5 dollars per fuse! I was in a bind and I needed get my hay cut and Autozone or Walmart was out of the way. Now I I have figure out another Engineering Flaw on the Tracker. PTO handle looses after 4 hours turning off and on the PTO. I have to tighten after each day if not, IT will get so loose, the PTO will not turn on. Any help on that?

I have similar issue with JD5075E where 15 amp ignition fuse blows when you try and crank.... unfortunately pulling the temp sensor didn't help... open to suggestions.

I'm not getting power to that system at all. I can jump the fuel shut selonoid from the battery and it will fire, but no power to and part of that wiring.

Mine did the same thing. Just received my replacement via Amazon, while installing the insulation around the wires tore out where it goes into the sensor. Just applied epoxy to try to reinsulate everything. I have a feeling I will be going to John Deere to order another one later today. Cant complain about cheap China imitations because that's all John Deere is anymore, Made In China.

I'm about to check out a 2018 5065e for a neighbor.
