Are the Ottawa Senators done adding to their roster, or should they look to acquire some more talent?
Brandon Piller and Ross Levitan take a look at some possible targets for the Sens! Staios has clearly been targeting guys with a lot of character. Demanding a trade because you don't want to pay your dues in the AHL seems like something that he'd consider a red flag.

I thought the story was that Winnipeg wanted to sign him but wouldn't put him on the NHL roster to burn a year. This is the normal way teams handle this. The Sens burned a year of Sanderson's ELC. He signed his extension after only one year. A lot of teams seem to think they save money if they make the guy play all three years of their ELC. But I think they're mostly wrong. Back to McGroarty, would you rather be trying to sign him to his next contract when he's 21 after a single season as a pro, or when he's 22 after two seasons as a pro. That's assuming you can do it one year out. But the same logic holds if he completes his ELC. 22 with two years as a pro, or 23 with three years as a pro? Assuming he''s had some opportunity to show what he can do, better to sign him when he's younger.

I'm much more sensitized to who fits on the team after DeBrincat and Chychrun so I'd rather go into the season with some cap space than do anymore moves, even though that isn't a content plentiful avenue for you guys to talk about. There isn't anyone earth shattering the team needs, so why not wait and see who they need between the start of the season and trade deadline? They'll make the playoffs off of the players they already have, so I think that makes sense.

I wouldn’t even consider trading for McGroarty. He clearly thinks he is bigger than his team and I just wouldn’t want a guy like that in the lineup, especially if it means giving up a first and a prospect. If they do it that’s fine, but I’m not tripping over other teams to get a deal done

lol He is being shown there is no path for him on the 1st team. Look how they treated Perfetti. He is getting yoyoed. Why would anyone want that in their career? Another horrible take. Yeah stick with a job that doesnt like you, doesnt value and wastes your youth. My goodness these types of takes are insane to me. Only in Sports should we have utter loyalty to a draft... Get drafted into war and things change, get your career dictated to you and your thinking will change. Dude is rolling at Michigan

@@heathclark318 it’s not that deep, it’s just my preference. I simply feel that a player who is not willing to earn his way into the league is a bit of a red flag. I’m fine with it if they get him, i would just be concerned that he would even want to play here, and if he does play here, would he mesh with the team if there is attitude there

I can see a lot of people in the comments have done 0 research on the McGroarty situation. THis isn't the case of some kid thinking he's a hot shot and too good to play in the AHL. The Winnipeg Jets purposely didn't want to sign him and have him play not only so they can "save money" but because they were also "competing for home ice advantage" Imagine being a top prospect that could be ready to be a good 3rd liner in the NHL right now have the team that drafted you tell you that you can't play and it has nothing to do with our talent. On top of the fact that he's seeing Cole Perfetti scratched in favor of vets, you could see how that would make playing there significantly less desirable right? Doesn't matter that Crookshank had to play 3 years in the AHL or Drake Batherson had to spend 2 years there, if you can play in the league you should have a fair shot. He's not going to get that in Winnipeg. I'd happily offer 2025 1st + Jarvientie OR Sogaard if thats' what gets it done. You have someone who can be a very good middle 6er for us for the next 3 years on an ELC, probably bridge him 2-3 years for 3-4m and decide what to do with him after. By all accounts is a great leader as well (was also captain of the gold medal wining USA WJC team this year)

Concerning Rucker, it’s not about paying your dues…it’s about maximizing your earning potential over the length of your career. If you start your NHL career at 20 then you hit free agency at much younger age than the average NHLr. The NHL free agency framework gives owners all the leverage over players until reach age 27-30…that’s too long. If you can hit free agency at 25 you will make considerably more money of the length of your career. Look for more and more college players to take this route.

I would target Oliver Kylington for the backend. There is 4 RD on the roster and only 3LD currently so the need is more on the left side. Plus we are one 85 or 72 injury away from disaster. Kylington has the offensive upside to play up the lineup in that worst case. I'm also comfortable with a Kylington/Kleven or Kylington/JBD bottom pairing. Kylington is just a bigger version of branny as a puck mover, it could really help those young guys. I know his camp left Calgary to seek term though, maybe if they can't find it a 1 year prove it deal here may work

if i was ottawa i would just sign daniel sprong, this would allow us to push amadio to 4th line wing or c and give us an insane bottom 6, im not worried about a 4ht line center i think stephenson can do it hes really good.

Jets fan chiming in: If I'm McGroarty or any other top prospect, I don't touch winnipeg with a 10ft pole. Laine should have been the next Ovechkin, instead he leaves due to mismanagement and becomes a basket case on player assistance. Perfetti scores like crazy and gets benched. Heinola should have been in the lineup years ago. So I get Rutger's point. That being said, you guys don't know if that's the end of it. What if there is a chance the Rutger is a spoiled Primadonna as well, and feels he should get to play where he wants and just waits it out? You guys don't want a Pierre Luc Dubois type situation like the Jets had. Only way I trade for Rutger is if I'm New York, Vegas, L.A. etc, or any other team that really thinks he would like to stay there.

McGroarty may be jaded by Winnipeg's development system and that may not be a red flag overall, but I do not like the idea of trading for a guy when we have a similar situation to Winnipeg

I am liking this team a bit more. Got rid of a lot of young guys but kind of balances out now. Only one I am sad to see go was Erik Brannstrom. He was this generation’s Wade Redden in terms of this city’s whipping boy…sometimes warranted but I feel the Sens going to regret letting him go.

Mcgroarty sounds good on paper but it’s the attitude and how is he with the guys in the dressing room. They got rid of Chykrun for similar reasons. We have been screwed a few times. Tough call.

@@buddha6954 other than a few puffs of smoke, no they weren't. But ok, bud, let's say they did. They also said Shane Pinto demanded a trade. There was talk of a locker room altercation between him and Brady. Do what if they did. Think that's the first time two players have ever argued in the locker room? They were seen playing golf together this summer. It's sports, not a fucking soap opera. Spend more time paying attention to the sports part and less to licking up stupid rumours left by click-hungry fake "insiders". You can go buy a copy of the National Enquirer if that's what you want.

I certainly wouldn't trade more than a first for McGroarty. In general draft picks seem to have higher value than prospects because draft picks can be anything, a center, a goalie, a d-man and can fit any style of play, while prospects are what they are. Everyone values first round picks. Not everyone thinks a given prospect is worth the same value. As a result demand is lower and thus value is lower. So I'm starting my offer at a second round pick.

Staios is executing. However the whole rebuild is in danger right now. This is the worst prospect cupboard in the league. Between the debrincat, chychrun trades and drafting Tyler Boucher, the Sens lost 7th, 10th, 12th overall picks. The new coach and goalie turning it around will be vital.

I wouldn't touch hi.I would kick the tires on Visily Podkolzin.He isn't working out for the Canucks.He has some real speed and can scrap,he is a good fighter.He is a left wing.That Winnipeg kid has a chip on his shoulders,you give the Russian a middle six role,and you will have a fast forechecker.

Adam Fox went for two 2nds. Teams that are on the clock are facing a dwindling asset. And the longer they don't trade him, the more bad blood with the player and the more likely complaints will surface that can diminish his value.

Don’t forget we still have to forfeit our 2025 or 2026 1st round pick (thanks, Pierre). We simply don’t have the assets to trade for a guy like McGroarty. IF we traded a 1st and a prospect for him, look at this: 2022 - No 1st round pick (DeBrincat) 2023 - No 1st round pick (Chychrun) 2024 - Carter Yakemchuk 2025 - No 1st round pick (McGroarty) 2026 - No 1st round pick (forfeit) I guess McGroarty would make up for one of the missed picks. But still.

If you can get Justin Schultz for cheap he's another good choice. Had good expected metrics last year but bad actual metrics so might come cheaper than expected and is a little younger, maybe a little more credible option to jump into the top 4 in case of injury. Shattenkirk is in my top 2 though for sure if he will come to play in Canada.

Jets aren't going to want future draft picks when their competitive window is open now. Most other teams would likely be willing to give up their first next year, plus a better prospect than we can offer, regardless. Also don't think we should be dealing our 1st next year with our 2026 pick likely forfeited. I think Ridly Greig would hold huge appeal for the Jets in this deal, and likely the cost of doing business here. We're strong at C and have two other studs from that 2020 class already. I'd do it.
