I could have sworn I heard either detonation or a slight knock when it idled down low right before he shut it off. W wonder if it was just the audio from the video but it really sounded like it had a lower end knock starting to develop. I think I'd take a good look at the rod bearings if it were my bike . I know those motors aren't mechanically quiet but the noise I was hearing was definitely something not right.

Had the old suicide shifter/ knuckle shifter. 😂 He lost his brakes and ran through a damn fence. Sold it 3 days later. His wife said Yeahhhhh that’s enough 🤣🤣🤣

FYI, they called it a DUO GLIDE because of the "new" glide front end which had shocks front AND rear as opposed to earlier bikes which had either Springer or girder front ends with rigid rearends neither of which had shocks.

Beautiful. I had a 1973 FL and it was much more advanced than that. I had 12 Volt alternator with centrifugal advanced single points. I too immediately changed to an FX seat. In that day all Harleys came from the factory without bags or windshield. They were dealer installed options. I now ride a 1988 FLHTC Electra Glide Classic. I ride cross country and like something a little more reliable.

Nice! I've got a 65 chopper I built and love it. Do they need more attention than new bikes, yes but they are simple to work on learn about and everything can be done with simple hand tools.

Wizard from the safety POV I would send the wheels to a spoked wheel expert to have them checked and re-tensioned. The wheels are after all nearly 60 years old.

I’m old enough to remember the 60’s and the Harleys of that era. As a preteen, it was a thrill it was to see and hear one or more of these cruising through our small town. We always thought of the characters who rode them as wild things, ones who gave the middle finger to the establishment.

Reminds me of one of the great lines from THE classic biker movie, "The Wild One" (young Marlon Brando) when he is asked by the damsel, "What are you rebelling against?" He replies, "What do ya got?"

Nice trade, BUT Triumph has as much heritage as HD. Even though Triumph has had their financial woes over the decades and needed to be resurrected, Triumph produced bicycles in 1884 and their first motorcycle in 1902.

Blimey, I know you've funded a few boats thanks to hoovie's heaps but hadn't realized you had bought land that needs ploughing too. You'll be nice and comfy with that sprung seat over the ruts. I bought a '60FLH in the early 90s. Lots of makeshift repairs had to be remedied including replacing a copper fuel line connecting the two tanks with a correct steel one from Harley. The copper one WILL break and leave you figuring a roadside repair. All in all it was a great machine and it was an unrestored dresser (all the stock bits) like this one. Not easy to find an unmodified Harley. What tells the tale is the cylinders - how many oversizes have they had? I had straight pipes with baffles for awhile but the bike will run better with some back pressure. The Linkert is good for making you kick the bike at a green light; S&S Super E solved my problem. Also I converted to 12V electrics - 6V is ok unless and until any resistance creeps into the wiring. I spent my life studying electricity and I'll never vote for 6V electrics. I2R losses are the reason. Amazing channel; thanks for all the good work.

What a deal, you got it going on, I’ve owned 4 HD and the one I have now is a Heritage softail, I love the vintage look, please keep that duo glide stock, it will keep its value and that scooter has its own personality. I’ve only seen one other in a collection and it was never ridden. I would ride that bike every chance I got. A beautiful work of art

Fantastic bike! I had a 1937 knucklehead and a WL 45 de 1942, had to sell'em many years ago to help my father, but miss'em so much! One time I almost lost my gf in a bump because of the rear springs! :D

The bike is definitely worth more parted out than together. That has been consistently true for a long time. Looking at good OEM engines and other OEM parts for sale easily demonstrates that. The reality is that is very true for many Harleys, even 12 year old bikes. Breakers have a thriving business now that we have parts shortages so it is only more true now. But the parts have gone up more than the bikes. A "generic" Panhead running before COVID, $10k to $15K. Now? $15k to $20K. I always advise looking at actual sold prices rather than asking prices. In this instance, you publicly established a selling price of $16k to $18k for that particular Panhead, which puts it exactly in the value range that I would predict. Insurance values are another matter. Certain models and years are indeed worth much more due to their rarity and/or originality. Original paint in good condition is a real price booster. Originality rules these days over restorations. I could be wrong, but those aren't even 1963 colors on that bike according to what I know, which you did mention later in the video, which many find detracts from value. One just sold local to be for about $15k by the way. Funny that the first non-original part I spotted was the muffler...which you immediately pointed out first as "stock"...then doubted it. Yes, indeed, that isn't an original muffler. There are some other non-original parts as well but that is expected. Looks like the top end was recently redone too. I can't stand those buddy seats either. LOL! It's a cool ride, do as you like. I want a 65 now, the only pan with electric start. My knees can't do kickers anymore. Oh, and I know people that put thousands of miles on such bikes each year. Seriously.

I have to say I'm very impressed with your knowledge and especially your excellent technique starting the bike.Being born in December of 1958 I was a little kid when bikes like yours were current technology. I remember seeing my older cousin and my dad all riding the old Panhead Harleys.I still think the pan is the best looking engine HD ever made.And like the bikes used in Easy Rider the Panhead is by far the engine of choice when someone is building a chopper.The Captain America and the Billy bike as seen in Easy Rider movie show just how good the Panhead looks when it's cleaned up and a bit of chrome added.

Many years ago, my friend was having trouble kick starting his pan head chopper in front of the bar. The bike was at the far left side of a row of about 10 other choppers. The bartender, a rather large individual, was making fun of my friend who invited him to give it a try himself. The bartender climbed aboard and with a mighty kick drove the pedal towards the ground resulting in an instantaneous kick back. And the crowd roared with delight. Embarrassed and rubbing his shinbone he again drove the kick starter down. Only this time loosing his balance and falling off to right side, setting off a chain reaction of tumbling choppers. It was a scene right out of the movies and what I thought of watching you start your bike. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Best wishes for you and Mrs. Wizard on the open road.

Car Wizard...you hit the jackpot! I have strange feeling though that your love for that motor will have you doing many things love always does; and I wouldn't blame you a bit. Before too long, that engine and trans will be sitting on the bench of the best old school Harley mechanic you can find getting a full, right down to the micrometer and ounce balanced rebuild. You'll be putting in upgraded seats for new valves; rings, pistons, rocker arms, and pushrods. Every bushing, seal, nut, bolt, washer, bearing, primary and secondary gear and chain will be new and factory spec. Every wire, cable, lever, connector, bulb, switch, terminal screw and mounting post will be gone over with a fine tooth comb. (You might want to consider a delux solo seat as well. You'll sit a lot lower than the buddy seat, and the pogo stick will give you a much more comfortable ride for your back.) Good luck Car Wizard; looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

Nice Bike, When I was young my dad had a Shovelhead he let me start it once and I weighed about 80 lbs. I tried and tried dad was there I finally got it to fire and it Kicked Back and the starter arm threw me over the handlebars. I never saw a man laugh so much.

You got something special there. I like Duo-Glides, especially my project build. I believe the rear brake shoes on 63 and up, are a 1/2" wider for the increasing weight of the Duo-Glides. You have got a Harley to enjoy there.

Nice bike....on another note I recall when as a 16 year old I was at a place called Tonka Motorcycles in Vancouver BC Canada....this was 1967 and they had several Police Panheads from about the same era....complete with lights siren etc....they were going for $800 at the time.....too expensive for me, I wound up at my local shop and buying a Civiian outfitted 1942 WLA in perfect condition for $400. Those were the days!

In 1971 I bought a chopped, raked, rigid framed 1952 Panhead. Springer front end, flame orange paint and a teeny coffin tank. 1800 bucks. I later swapped it even for a 1973 BMW 750. Much more comfortable and reliable. Sold that to help put a down payment on a house for my family.

Good choice to go with the CV carburetor let me tell you 👍👍👍👍 My 73 shovelhead had the old dead man throttle. Once you're used to it it's great... Got to be a know it all but I know a little bit about CV carburetors start with a 45 slow Jack and a 175 main jet with a stock of motion tube that has the multiple holes in it and I think an n72 needle. 😊

I like what you said too.........."leave it as is.........but "adaptations to set it up the way I want it". The start up and idle was sweet. Wait until you kick it in front of a crowd. My father bought a blue and white 62 duo glide off the show room floor. I have an old family movie of my older sisters and brothers sitting me on the seat as a baby in 1972. Dad rode it until he traded it in on a 1976 Electra glide. He loved that duo glide and said he wished he never traded it.

Trading 3 vehicles for the harley was actually a good idea since it keeps your money in the bank in case something on the harley isn't working or breaks.

Deal I am doing this weekend for Shovelhead I always wanted is a 1967 BSA 650 Lightning Chopper Project and a Low Mile super clean 97 E36 BMW 328iC Convertible in a 2 for 1 deal for the 83 FLH King of the Highway that might be a FLT because of all the FLT stuff on it FLH isnt supposed to have and you are Right on Prices of Desirable Harleys, Shovels went from 5 to 9K to now starting at 9(k and running wild with average 12-16K for a daily driver

Im sure its a fine ride, just never liked riding on an engine that felt like it was so out of balance it would throw a rod. 😃

Mostly a bike guy here, and while I've never ben a *big* hog fan, I do admire them - I built up a scale-model Electra-Glide in my callow youth - and I must say that Duo is sweet, and you *did* get a hell of a deal for an intact/running example. Hope you keep us posted on the bike's progress, as well as (maybe?) a few clips of you rolling upon it. (Shall I take it as read that Mrs. Wiz isn't terribly keen on riding pillion?)

I seem to remember you had a Yamaha Roadliner /Stratoliner sometime along. Nice thing about those is that they start and run every time.

I would have left it the way it was except for the non original muffler. I have a 59 and the pogo seat is a great feature once you get the springs adjusted for your weight it beats the hell out of a frame mounted seat. It's a very nice Harley congrats.

I have a 2006 Softail Deluxe and took off many of the new bits and replaced them with 1960's bits and now the bike looks like a 60's FL but with a twin cam. It's amazing how your 63 and my 06 have basically the same bodywork!!

A bike like that is best enjoyed between 20 and 50 mph. Just a gorgeous motorcycle!

Growing up in the 1960s I remember almost never seeing Harley Davidson motorcycles and I grew up on the Southern California coast not far from Los Angeles! Back then there were a lot of Triumph, and BSA, then in the late 1960s Hondas were all over the place.

I saw an old Harley for sale many years ago down a little-travelled side road and I tried to convince my dad to loan me the money for it. It was a ‘50 or ‘51 Hydro Glide. Asking price? $1500.00. Didn’t get it. It ran and drove great. The seller’s grandson was tear-assing around the dirt roads like a maniac on it. Can’t get ‘em all, I guess.

One fine machine, Wizard! The '63s definitely had a small fishtail muffler, so that's been changed about....but, man, what a wonderful find!!

I was forced to get a moped when I was 16 instead of a motor bike. This probably saved my life though, I still appreciate a cool whip. All the best family guys and great bike.

I used to own 64FL6810 and was purchased back in the day for $1200 complete with a 55 side car. Hand shift, foot clutch, manual spark advance.It was my go to college ride. Should you get a hack consider running a Michelin x 5.50x 16 rear, as they consume rear tires and chains driving a hack. Hand shifting can be done with your knee riding the shifter to the detentes. Six cases of beer can be carried in the hack, but will be excessively foamy. Best of luck with it. Check and see if the case halves match. Consider switching to a belt primary and lose the total loss oiling system.

Where I live, here in the UK, I occasionally see a gleaming old Harley Davidson. You know it's a Harey, before you see it, because of the engine tone. I've had several motor bikes, but not one of these beasts! Anyway, Wizard, "good luck and well done, you."

I'm a Honda motorcycle man and Harleys (even newer ones) are such old school stone age machines...they don't suit the way I prefer to ride but I respect how they keep true to the heritage and have that unique old school feel especially on these old ones, cool example of old school tech.

Nice bike! When I was 17 a friend and I bought a bike in a box for $50. (I'm a bit older than you. Prices were somewhat lower in the early 60s) It was a 47 Indian Chief with a stick shift. My friend's dad helped us put it together. We sold it for $200 after about a year.

I had a friend that restored a panhead. We did a weekend road trip from NYC to to Norfolk to pay $500 for the original speedo, this was in 1985. Doing away with the tractor seat ( solo or the buddy seat) is sacrilege. Drilling into an original frame is a shame. If he wants a bike with a modern seat he can but tens of thousands of them. I would not change a thing.

I can appreciate HD heritage but I never would of made that swap. I've heard that triumph 675 R was a superlative bike. Must admit you look More suited for Harley than the triumph. Happy trails

Dad had a 57 with the tank shift and foot clutch. I learned how to ride on it when I was 15 in 1961. It was a beast!

Dollar Wise but I like to get a panhead I mean I couldn't afford one that nice how I'd happy to get a motor and tranny and start building one good score. 👌👌👌🏍️

As long as the frame, oil bag, front n rear rim, spedo and tanks are stock with most of the factory accessories and hardware- then its a good deal. Just picked up a panshovel rigid north of the border, getting it to be a one kicker. Then making into a real chop down the line. Parts are NO JOKE. Forgetting the currency exchange, pans are rising in value unfortunately. Knuckles have doubled in the last 1 1/2- 2 yrs. This bike as I see it from my end looks to be original for the most part. I would have a further look at hose heads since the rocker boxes look TOO new. Change to single point, save the duals though. Super to a CV is a commendable change although I like the super E on mine fiddling n such. Dual Dixie tips are the best for those, but single fish is next up. Nice kick over!!!!

One comment I was thinking, then thought more? Aww, bike seller got shrewdly negotiated out of thousands. No seller didnt if you think about it. Wizard priced market prices on those cars. But those cars were honestly gone through and services by wizard. That sort of mechanical confidence and work which wizard did labour for on his own dime is also what the bike seller bought. Could they have haggled? Sure. But still fair. Wizard got full return of investment on the servicing.
