Jake please stay with Traditional Archery, the sport/hobby needs archers like you in it. You're also helping all of us trad shooters out immensely! I'll be getting a video review from you in the very near future. Thanks for all of the great videos, advice, wisdom and time you've put into this channel. By the way that was some fine shooting on that 25 & 30 yard targets, I fall apart when I get that far out. Sincerely, Mike C.

After you draw back to aim and watch it to keep it, our only job from there is to Concentrate on the move that gets us too are Psychological trigger, with a movement slow a enough that if we get out of control we can draw down. PERIOD Joel Turner, really is a genius, he cracked the code on truly what target panic is , and he's 100percent right. When you follow Joel to the science, he turns you into a shooting machine. I'm very grateful for Joel, when I took his course many moon's ago, he upped my game too a very high level. Jake and it's fun too continue too learn pearls of wisdom from an Olympic shooter, I'm glad your learning traditional, down the line , I'm sure you will be a force too recognize with.

Byron Ferguson, Jeff Phillips, Jeff Kavanagh...stop thinking so much...stop thinking. Watch. I AM...that's all. Persevere, persevere, persevere to make the LEAP to shooting trad bows as they are made and meant to be shot. What a dramatic epiphany and refreshing discovery that is made. There really is an outstanding and extremely accurate way to shoot that is not rooted at all in the KSL steps method... and that said I believe you're going to be AWESOME at trad archery!

I’m just gonna through this one out: It is probably because of your expertise on the Olympic recurve, that you are anchoring that low. Your at the same time pulling the string to your nose as a fix point, or second anchor right? Most trad. Archers dont. I would anchor higher, and let the string travel past, or beside the nose. You can now cant the bow a little and still have the arrow under the eye. You now have the opportunity to use the cock feather as a trigger. You just need to place the fletchings the right place on the arrow of course. With your form, it would be killer. Thanks for your videos, from one across the pond who joyned in to learn good form. Thanks

Been doing OR for about 6 years and decided to follow your journey on Trad (bought a longbow!) as a change-up to my OR (still the main focus though). Thanks so much for the BEST alignment description about your effort. I was finding the same thing about getting to transfer and feeling calm and in control before letting go - can't seem to make myself do an expansion - and as you said - don't think I need to if everything feels right. My shots are way better focusing on position first and then basically looking where I want to hit (instinctive).

This is by far one of my favorite videos for yours, I as a 48 year old man, basically starting archery a month ago found you by chance. Always not happy with just hitting the target, but wanting to get better, which is happening each time I shoot. I wanted to mention that I was chatting with one of the oldboys at the club I shoot at about clickers and such. He shoots a very nice Deflex recurve. He mentioned that he uses his index finger as his pseudo clicker. just slightly caressing the bottom of the arrow. for him his spot is the first crease in his knuckle, then lets it fly. this seems to work for him. Just wanted to throw that out there for you, to see if you wanted to try such. Also I like the cut on your fletching, cool batwing sort of vibe. lol

Jake, I loved this vid. It made me feel so much better about my own progression! So let's break it down... I followed your tutorials for form, correct body alignment and your technical analysis on what, when & why. I used you and others to create my own 'green light' system. But one thing was missing. That's trusting in your instinct, a feeling not a physical trigger. That instinct or feeling varies with my mood, energy and diet. It really goes back to a primeval part of our minds. I can see and feel your frustration vibing out the screen! Get the arrow closer to your eye and don't look for a trigger to loose. Just let it happen and flow. If you can just let go of your technical hang ups, your form and inner self will just make it happen

Hi Jake…out of my experience, traditional archery is a little bit different than what by profession, you are use to. Different angles, and position of the body is involved, depending on the scenario. Especially, if you’re in a hunting situation, and if imperfect footing is in place. We, as trad archers have to adapt to how our terrain is presented to us, and we make changes. Although the KSL method is vital in every aspect of competitive/ Olympic archery, it sometimes has to deviate from the norm. Meaning that, sometimes we have to cant the bow, or hunch over to create an optimal sight picture, and at times I’ve had to kneel down on one leg or the other to make the best of my shot. Each of course, will play a different engagement of different muscles of the shot cycle. I guess I could say, some of it is instinctual, and some of it is “ KSL “, especially if the target isn’t a fixed target, I.e. hunting scenario. I use to tell my students, even to this day…..using a movie quote/ line, by the world famous, Bruce Lee…….” Don’t think, feel… it is like a finger pointing to the moon “ ……This is how I view trad archery, and apply some, but not all of the concepts of the “ KSL “ shot cycle. It just depends on the situation, as well as other variables. So yes indeed, it can be a bit of a challenge. But regardless of the disciplines of archery is used, I always use the KSL shot cycle as the foundation, and make any necessary adjustments to optimize my shot. As always Jake, love your channel, and it has helped many of us Archers immensely. Keep doing what you’re doing….Bless You Brotha 😇🙏🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇵🇭🇵🇭🇺🇸👍

Yep, learned to shoot by using the KSL cycle on a traditional recurve. It's a great way to master the fundamentals of stability and consistency. From there it's easy to transition into any kind of archery. Though it's also a how I unintentionally developed my love for trad archery.

Instead of just "AND", you might try "AND, ONE, TWO" and then release. This works for me when I start to rush my shots. Later that rhythm becomes natural and no mnemonic is needed. You are miles ahead since you are not also struggling with alignment, being overbowed, or all the other beginner issues.

Hey Jake. Thank you for your video content. While practicing of traditional Archery and particular instinctive archery without any aiming helps or systems it's very helpful to focus on your target. After thousends and thousends of shots you will know how your arow flys and get the right feeling for the point where your arrow will stuck in the target. But it's quite difficult for me to hold this focus on my target. A help for me is the thought or the imagination of the arrow point in the center. I push the bow and the arrow point in the target and try to keep my focus on it. Best regards from Germany

Great video as always, thank for your content Jake. Not really relevant to the video but I just want to share: One of my club member who shoot trad (thumb draw) describes how he would release an arrow like this, he got 2 anchor points: - one is the back tension which is the "AND" in the video described - another one is the arrow feather, since he shoots thumb draw, there is no hand-face anchor point, instead he builds his own feather deliberately to touch his ear (quite clever) Once the 2 anchor points are reached / engaged, he immediately lets go the arrows, pretty decent groupings in my opinion. The idea behind it is that (as he describes to me) the back tension "AND" controls the draw length and the feather controls the alignment (+ draw length) so it is pretty consistent from shot to shot. The draw back is the shooting temper, it can be very tiring if you cant control the temper

Jake, being you shoot three under I think you will have better grouping by anchoring higher up on your face. By doing this you can look straight down your shaft to the tip of the arrow as an aiming reference. Once you establish your point on you can adjust your gap accordingly for further yardage. I can't believe I'm giving you advice but I think this will help you. All my trad buddies turned me from split finger to three under years ago due to the fact that looking down the shaft at the target really helps fine tune your aiming.

I'd love to see you try out the other style of shooting; it has many names. I call it the Asiatic Thumb Draw lol It's a lot different and there's more to manage but once you get used to it; you can go out to Olympic distances and be hitting the target pretty consistently and easily. Without having to aim off target, so none of the "well I put the point halfway up the tree and YEET" I just wanna see an Olympian put his spin on the old style of archery.

I shoot Instenative, but the Howard Hill style. With split finger and I see in my peripheral vision the tip of the arrow. But it is used just for alignment check briefly, but keeping my focus on the target and trying to visibly see the smallest spot on the deer kill zone or on my target in backyard. The "Hill" style is called "the Split Vision style and he was arguably the greatest instinctive shot of all time. I've been shooting that way for over 70yrs. I'm still just an average shot with my recurve's, and longbows and even shot the early compounds that had the wood risers with split finger. I was way more accurate with those due to the let off. I've got a newer compound now but don't really like, usring sights, releases, and range finders. Played a lot of archery golf in the '80's shooting instinctively and that greatly improved judging distance. 3d courses I'm sure would do that too. Have to work on my back tension and release now its gone down hill so just ordered a 40# take down long bow and my 25" draw should put draw hold @36#. And stop my plucking and collapse on the shot. Pushing 80 now but been shooting bows since I was 7. Sorry for the long winded comment but I enjoy your views. Your "instinctive" shooting will get razor sharp accuracely the more you do it.

I enjoyed this video. I’ve been giving the exact same thing quite a lot of tought. I’m very much familiar with Joel’s teachings and have struggled with TP for several years. I haven’t been able to get comfortable with any psychotriggers and have tried to find out a way to let my mind know when it’s time to release. The feather to nose, for example, doesn’t feel right. It’s like I would have to pull the last mm with my fingers or arm. Not the way I want to reach my trigger. Lately I’ve been trying to find the answer from inner speach and feelings in different places in my body. I don’t believe there is a 1 answer for all types of shooting when it comes to anticipation of the shot and different people with varying backgrounds. But that’s just my opinion. I shoot longbow quite decently, even with anticipation. I would really much like to learn how to control my release with my mind. I’m sure I will find out the way, as I have already progressed with my shot control. I’m really looking forward on your journey with this issue, as it’s so familiar.

Great video, these Trad videos are the best!! Find out what your point on distance is, even in Trad we have a point on. You can use a feather to nose touch, then release. So anchor transfer expand until the feather touches. Still not aiming just look at the spot.

Jake it would be interesting to see what your arrow point is doing during the shot. Still, creeping forward or moving backward. Many traditional and barebow archers I have observed have the point creeping forward. I guess this indicates a loss of back tension and not pulling through the shot.
@williambilse
@williambilse Ай бұрын
IMO even shooting trad, it is necessary to focus on expansion to the finish, because this focus takes you out of the aim and allows your mind to move on. If you fire at random during transfer, your shot process will eventually devolve into target panic.

Great vid Jake, sharing the thought/analysis process. I shoot my barebow in a similar manor to you here (worked really well when it was instinctive - really hard now that I'm trying to apply a more conscious process!). Transfer and... 'lock on' is my mantra still slightly instinctive, but buys me time after transfer to steady myself and gives me a definitive release point rather than "NOW!" which is often followed by cuss words!!

Thanks! I find the slight delay after transfer to help disconnect from the urgency of the release, at least a little and to have so much promise in a short period of time gives me some hope that with some deliberate practice it can be even better.

You have alot of training and experience on your back, and this can make you a very good instinctive archer. But due to being and olympic archer, you tend to do everything very methodical, robotic, because when you aim with a sight doing everything the same being repetitive is the way to go. Olympic archers compared to instinctive archers are very precise. But they are precise only in that scenario, at that certain range. If you consider that an instinctive archer is not that precise but is far more precise at different ranges, can shoot from different positions, doesn't need to anchor the same every time doesn't need to do a full draw all the time, than i would say an instinctive archer is more accurate. Imagine yourself as an ancient archer on the battlefield, you don't have time to be calm and relaxed, you just have to make it work. Combat archery to me is, instinctive archery. Just like in life, if you try to understand your instincts, you will go crazy a little bit... I think the part where in instictive archery refers to as to be calm, is at the fact that you have to accept, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't... it just the way it is. You have to abandon alot of your habbits for instinctive archery. You have to think less or not at all of how to draw and so on. Your only focus has to be the very spot you're trying to hit, nothing more, you have to silence your mind, and that is just as hard as it is to become methodical maybe harder for some people, definitely for me. Focus was always a big problem for me. And i noticed that when i am able to focus, is just like magic. So i think this is what you should do. You are trained, you definitely have printed in your subconscious how to draw, how to anchor, your brain knows all that stuff. All you have to do is focus where you want to shoot.

Jake, I have a strange way of doing it that seems to work. I use my nose. I keep the string anchored very tightly across my chin and keep my head tipped back just enough so that my nose is almost touching the string. When everything feels perfect I subtly tilt my head forward to touch my nose to the string. My nose coming in contact with string is my mental trigger to release the shot. Since your nose is always within your field of vision it acts like a rear sight without needing to focus on it. I also prevents me from plucking by distracting my attention away from my hand.

for me. I feel my barebow got significantly better shooting recurve & trying to work with a clicker. Especially doing astra shot trainer routine during winter and doing ksl flexibility spt helped significantly. As for target panic itself, I feel the biathlon community is pretty much spot on with shooting rythmically in sync with your heartbeat. Everything about that sport is just fucked up from an archery perspective though. A miss on that small target gives you a penatly round vs archery you only loose the set. people in biathlon have dropped from 1st place with a 20 second lead back to 20th. Trad does seem super fun though & it'll definatly keep you honest. Every mistake seems to get magnified on a trad bow shooting off the shelf since there's nothing to stop the arrow from going where it's going. Will be getting a longbow next month for our clubs summer competition at 25m, i'm pretty happy with my barebow for 50m how it feels i'm just not going to touch it anymore 🤣.

@@JakeKaminskiArchery From what i've gathered they train with a metronome. So applying that to archery would require you to shoot a few sessions with a heartrate monitor and start training with some earbuds in on a metronome app on your phone. Then you basically have to line up your entire shot cycle on that tempo. Biathlon does have several studies that involve brainwave examinations and the like but the study group is usually limited to around 10. Though reading through those papers needs a dictionary to say the least. The influence of physiobiomechanical parameters, technical aspects of shooting, and psychophysiological factors on biathlon performance: A review is the easiest to read. Performing under pressure: The effects of physiological arousal, cognitive anxiety, and gaze control in biathlon is the most interesting but it's very hard to read if you're not acquinted to all those terms. Someone should do this entire study specifically for archery. Though i highly doubt anyone is going to do any significan research regarding archery on the same level as biathlon. so far bassham & turner is all we got as far as i can tell.

This is probably just silly talk, but the focus on clicker clicking feels like focusing on the consequence and not the cause. Maybe the answer you're looking for could be found from why expand and what it does, instead of the click that's the consequence of the expansion? For the newb me the expansion feels like the phase where I tuck myself in between the bow arm and drawing arm, closer to the bow. But again, what do I know? :)

I notice as far as your draw goes your anchor is low as an Olympic archer. I was brought up using my middle finger in the corner of my mouth. As far as nose touching string as you do with Compound or Olympic style. You're going to get a lil more draw length doing so.

I think you're way overthinking this. You can do with this type of shooting whatever process works for you. I would recommend, that if you goal is to experience something different from Recurve, that you maybe not make this more like that. There is a time and place for snap shooting, where you drill to the point that you can identify and lock in the target within the space of your draw, and release immediately upon reaching it, with no pause. Harder still if the target or you (or both) are moving. It's a fun way of shooting, but ultimately it comes down to whether or not you want to put the amount of work in that will be required to become proficient at it. A couple of things I will point out is that your bow hand is moving inconsistently when you loose. On occasion it will drop, on others, as you mention, it goes out more to the side. You might compare the results you had with those variables and see which is more appropriate, and then be conscious of that. Also, I did not look to see how this changed throughout, but the way the bow is moving in your hand after the shot seems to change as well. I suspect that is a result of being used to shooting Recurve with a finger sling. It would be interesting to see how you responded to a traditional Korean bow, which is usually held tightly with the middle, ring and pinky fingers, and the index finger is curled up and placed on the forward side of the bow. Pretty much the opposite of most Recurve grips.

Interesting....I always thought (Trad) TRADITIONAL ARCHERY was similar to Japanese KYUDO Spiritual Archery practices or Korean GUNGDO Spiritual Archery....where it doesn't matter if you hit the target...its about the technique of set up, release of the arrow, and calmness of mind and heart after .. Japanese = When you first begin Archery as a beginner, it's okay to see if you can hit the targer, this is how you must start out. But as you grow in mental strength & technique.... as you progress further, its the spiritual archery development that becomes essential. Relying only on strength & basic physical technique won't let you fully develop in the Spiritual Archery Arts. It doesn’t matter if an arrow hits the side or center of the target…Samurai use the art of archery to train themselves to eliminate insincerity, fear and doubt from their hearts. When samurai , reacts with displeasure, it is a time of reflection to look within and work with what is happening, and improve on self . This is the Spiritual Training of Archery for Samurai Archery= self mastery and not be swayed by internal thoughts.. Korean = The Gukung of the Korean archery masters, beleive that the Bow and Arrow are not seperate components, to the archer. They must be guided by the heart which requires Mental mastery. Humility & Respect requires high levels of concentration. It takes over 30 minutes of (meditative practice and to assemble a Traditional Horn Gukung Bow... To be a 5th degree Archery master , one must be able to hit the target 31/45 arrows at a distance of 145 meters (475 feet). USA = Traditional archery is shooting with a bow and arrow as a sport that earns points, prizes,& fame . It requires a high level of focus and concentration.

Good idea. No need or rule to use a glove for trad. Most hunters do, but if your just punching paper it's absolutely cool to use a tab with trad, especially if that's what works best for you. Trad bows are so sensitive, and that glove may be throwing some of your shots off. I'd say try the tab again.

T&D starts as soon as you start drawing the bow past brace.

Why shoot three under when you shoot traditional ,but you shoot split finger with your olympic rig?
@JakeKaminskiArchery
@JakeKaminskiArchery Жыл бұрын
It’s easier to just grab the string and not worry about pinching the arrow. My bow actually feels snappier to me too 3 under for whatever reason. Plus the arrow flys better at the moment. Probably all nocking point related.

You are not to hold a trad bow like your target recurve. You are supposed to can’t the bow to the right. I can see by your glove, it’s way too loose on the fingers and you need a good leather arm guard. There are several who hold the bow like you, but they all started like you, shooting a target recurve. I have shot all of them and trad is much different. Go watch Byron Ferguson and Howard Hill videos. See how they hold their bows. A well seasoned trad archer will NEVER ahold his bow perfectly vertical. It will always be canted.

I wanted to cant it but my arrows are not right for the bow affecting impact, I straighten it up to fix a right left issue. I refuse to Aim right or left to have a center impact and adjust with a can’t.
@pickin4you
@pickin4you Жыл бұрын
@@JakeKaminskiArchery Normally a right to left issue is a tuning problem. Arrows not correct for your bow. Chanting the bow, if you think about it, you are shooting out of a V and not a backwards L. The V would be like a launcher rear on a compound. It takes most of the left and right out of it. You are used to bare bow, but with a rest, which you can make your own body adjustments for that. I start with a bare shaft, full length. I install the weight I want up front. Normally close to or over 200 total grains. Maybe a 100 grain brass insert with a 100 or 125 grain point. Then I slide the knock in the back and shoot. See where it hits, then start cutting 1/4” at a time until I am really close, then I do the fine tuning by twisting the string tighter or looser until a bare shaft flies and hits the target dead straight. I write my brace height down to make sure it’s the same every time I string up the bow or if I change strings. I am also an odd ball. I am an instinctive shooter with a longbow or recurve. I never hold at full draw. I hit where I am looking. When I draw, and my index finger hits the corner of my mouth I loosen my fingers and follow through the same every time. I shoot like Howard Hill. He never held at full draw either. You are born with it or you are not. I am trying to help, but if you can’t get the hang of it canting the bow, then you have to do you. Shoot the way your shoot best. Arrow tuning is huge so don’t fall for the paper tuning a trad bow. That’s just for compound shooters who use a mechanical release that is like a robot releasing the string. Too much error even with great finger shooters to try to even think of paper tuning a trad bow. Many say they do it, but it’s a total waste of time.
@pickin4you
@pickin4you Жыл бұрын
@@JakeKaminskiArchery also, once tuned, you should never have to adjust your impact by adjusting your cant. The cant should be the same as much as you can, but shooting an outdoor range, you may have to cant it more or less depending on clearance issues with your shot or your limbs. It takes time but you can play with different ways of holding the bow to hit the same spot. Lay it flat. Cant a little or a lot. Turn the bow upside down with the sight window of the bow facing the ground. You will have to play with them all.

Jake, it !ooks like you are shooting to a time rhythm, all to the same millesecond. Ready or not here I go. You do not shoot Olympic that way. There you do not expand until the aim settles. If it does not settle you let down and begin again. Here you are shooting ready or not here it goes. Wait for it before you move to the last step. Execution. - You know this from Olympic archery. Do not skip the last step. Bring it to longbow, - lbg
