I think you have mixed up the line of the arrow with the line of force. If you're describing the line of force as the line along which you draw the string, it can't be along the arrow: your hand grips below the arrow. The line of force must be understood to go through the pressure point of your bow hand. The correct analysis of good elbow positioning would should that the elbow and forearm of the string hand should point towards the grip. When the draw doesn't follow this line, it is a weaker and more inefficient draw. Your high draw example clearly shows this: the drawing arm points below the grip. However, your low example is actually a good line - you said yourself that it feels good, and that's because it is. Your elbow might be a tiny bit lower, but the arm is positioned to point towards the grip, so the draw and hold is done efficiently. The discrepancy may in fact be that in this example, you are positioned slightly differently on camera or aiming slightly lower. That said, a lot of traditional form and structure use the arrow line as the point of reference, so the understanding of the lines is important (though markedly different in the emerging understanding of modern sport archery). Following the arrow line isn't wrong and it works for most people. It's just worth pointing out that the arrow line and line of force aren't the same.

Could it be that the arrow line and line of force depend on whether you shoot Mediterranean release or three under because the grip at the string hand is higher for Mediterranean? So for Mediterranean, line of force and arrow line are probably closer together if not the same?

I was not really using the Olympic version, referencing it was something I should not have done to avoid confusion. The line of force I speaking about is that which goes through the arrow. I have seen too many peoples arrow flex while at full draw. Keeping the line I showed has not only helped me but others i have shown and pointed it out to.

I came here to say the same thing, but it looks like I'm two years too late. Even in target archery this is a common misconception. Many coaches only use the arrow line, but that's not actually where the force is aligned. Also your hook and anchor point might change the position of your arm, but they don't change the fact that your pressure point and your shelf/rest aren't in the same place. It is this difference that determines the ideal angle of your draw elbow. For an Olympic setup with a rest this would typically be higher than shooting off a shelf where the arrow is closer to your hand.

First Thanks for your instruction videos. I'm a older man (77) getting back into archery and trying BB. I have a cheaper Olympic style riser and carbon wood limbs with 30lb draw but 37lbs at my 29" draw. After shooting some I felt like I was struggling with full draw and had advice from friends to get lower wt. limbs to get full alignment and draw. I almost did but found I could lower the draw wt. on my bow and lower the string brace height some to make it more comfortable for me to work. I'm shooting 600 spine 5.9GPI arrows with about 84gns up front with 13 or so FOC . I may try a little more weight up front. I will give this a try and see if I can get the groups I want. Thought I would pass this on and again thank you for taking the time to help the many archers you have.

Grandpadean Keep at it, I just got back into archery at 72, it'll come back..."slowly '. I decided to give it a try after a friend, who only shoots 'trad', loaned we a bow to try for a week .I was hooked. I got out my 65# compound I had touched in 15 years , l thought it was broke, I couldn't hardly move the string. It was me not the bow. I got a 45# recurve, probably should have started lighter, but I thought if I get good enough I can hunt with it. I shot it a little every day until I got shaky. Now I can pull my compound easy @50# but traditional is WAY more fun. I had a cow elk run pass me at 35 yards but that was as close I got to any thing all season. Never released an arrow but had a lot of fun, looking forward to next year. Greg's videos have really helped.

Love the video It brought me to check the latest "form-video" I did from myself. Looks like I have at least one line right for sure ;) But now I wanna try and get my anchorpoint up higher. Just from one draw I can say that I won't be able to get it as high as yours Greg, due to me having to wear my glasses all the time. So when I go to full draw with the arrow in line with my cheekbone (shooting split fingers) the string hits and moves my glasses. I might have to try to what hight I can get without touching them Thanks for the good explanation as always

How does a traditional archer shooting alone check his alignment? Is shot three fingers under with an anchor point being a finger in the corner of my mouth. The string often hits my lip if I line up the string with the point of the arrow. Will canting the bow prevent the string from hitting my lip while I look down the arrow? Or should I get a new anchor point? Thanks for your great videos.

Great question. Several ways: 1) Use a camera - film your self 2) Use mirror The big thing to do it learn what it "Feels" like in the proper position. Then when alone you can work off that If the string is hitting your lip, then the most likely reason is you are pulling away on the release. I hit my cheek, when I do that and it lets me know what I'm doing wrong.

Side view is incorrect. The line of force is from the point of pressure on the grip all the way to the elbow, what you have shown is the forearm in line with the arrow. All in all a good and important topic. Greeting.

@@TradArchery101 The line of force is the line of force, whether it's Olympic or Traditional ... I understand what's important to you, but the line with the arrow is not the same as the line of force and that's a fact. Many traditional archers put their elbow in the line with the arrow and it works, but LOF is right for you in the third example, look at 10:00 minute. The line goes from the point of pressure on the grip to the middle finger of the pulling hand all the way to the elbow. You said yourself that you feel good there, it's because you're in the line...

@@TradArchery101 I've screenshot the first example at 6:40 and the one Boris suggested and the line of force goes from the elbow, through the middle of the fingers to around the middle of the bowhand.... The fact that the arrow line happens to match is a coincidence... Which is why anyone not shooting the same setup as you or the style won't have the same arrow line, even if they shoot a traditional style The idea is to shoot this same shot sequence/position and then adjust your aiming... Rather than let the aiming dictate how you shoot...which is why those shooting with a high/low elbow can still hit where they aim and repeat the same shot for the same result There's no doubt you can shoot as consistent or that it's improved your shooting, laws of physics still apply even without a sight on the bow

@@TradArchery101 that made no sense.... The problem with the arrow force line falls apart when you start getting further away from the nock for example with string walking... The principle still remains the same though, the force acts at the bowhand and the stringhand.... The elbow and the pressures on the hands/fingers need to come to some sort of equilibrium..... Just because you have an arrow conveniently next to the hand at roughly the correct angle doesn't mean the force goes along the arrow line... Which is why even if you have the correct angles of the elbow with regards to the arrowline, heeling the grip causes problems because that's where the force acts The same can be said for shooting off the shelf and then sticking an elevated rest on the riser and moving the arrow 1/2" to inch higher... Now the arrow angle has changed but the forces required to draw back and have things inline are still the same place

@@TradArchery101 string walking was an example to show that the force line isn't through the arrow... You can use the arrow line as a reference but the forces go through the hands.... paying attention to the pressure on the hands and where the elbow wants to pull back with no extra up/down would be most consistent and repeatable... Where the arrow lines up is of no consequence because we can't see the elbow at full draw but can feel the force on the hands and the elbows relative position behind you The only way to properly test this is to shoot a bow with no arrow and check the direction of the release..... Something we can't do! The other way to show where the force line is between the pressure points of the bowhand, the average pressure on the fingers and the elbow position with regards to the direction of the shoulder/back tension is to draw the bow with no arrow and to learn this feeling We shoot the bow, the bow shoots the arrow

@@b12khx89 I understand the line you are talking about. But is there not also a line in relation to the arrow? If we have a low elbow for example, does this not put a different pressure on the string which in turns changes how the energy is transferred into the arrow? Yes it does. That is the line I'm speaking of. Since energy travels best in a straight line, then having a straight line through the arrow and straight back would be preferred. Many, no the vast majority barebow archers, do not have the line you speak of. Their elbows are well above their bow hand. If i may inquire, what type of archery do you do? I ask so I can better understand where you are coming from. How you wrote your replies, I would venture to guess a target archer by chance?

What I do depends on two things: 1) How far away it is 2) If it is actually higher than my head height If it is close and not higher than my head height I do nothing different. If it is not higher than my head height but farther, I shoot as normal. If it is higher than my head and far, then and only then do i make an adjustment.
