A post Emancipation ance to celebrate the Emancipation of slavery. Some of the words of the songs that accompany and the dances tell of "Queen Victoria set us free", and the "Queen has arrived, and the oney must flow". The dance has a procession followed by competition between the Blue King and Queen and the Red King and Queen.Accompaning the King and Queen of each set, are the grand children, knights and followers,Costumes are rich and colourful.

I've seen Dominica, and St Lucia dances. Now I'm watching Jamaica. I can see that all or most of these cultural dances are similar to my native country of Dominica.

I recognize the music from Surinam, but the dress at 07:15 really surprised me it is almost exactly that of Surinam koto. Also the so-called set dances at 7:30 are the same and are also called set-dansi at which the music master calls out the figures the dancers have to make. I don't think it is still performed though. Thanks so much, I learn a lot of both Jamaica and Surinam at the same time. Jah Bless!

The jonkunu dance originates from igbo dance in south east Nigeria. The music played in the jonkunu dance has the same rhythm with igbo traditional music dance

I DONT KNOW.. i associate Igbo with bookworms + writing, business...not huge dance culture. Jonkunu looks Guinea-Bissau (but maybe it a spiritual gateway dance that is standard regional) i see a bit of Congo in the video. but the Congo influence is everywhere new world and the old. Dancing is like fighting you can spot the style a mile away. Certain regions have a unique style. SE Africa and Polynesia/Micronesia = same dancing style down to the grass skirts and ankle bracelets

cinnamonstar808 Fair point, as each of us individually will naturally find certain dances better then others. However, I still believe the dance has noticeable Igbo influences.

Thanks for sharing this fascinating video of traditional Jamaican dances. As an African American collector of children's rhymes and game songs, I'm particularly interested in the ring game that is shown from 12:07-14:03 in this video. What is the name of this ring game and what are the words that the girls are singing?

From the online research that I've done since watching this video, I think that the ring game that is shown in this video is named "Long Long Thread". and is an example of the old British "Thread The Needle" games. Click pancocojams.blogspot.com/2017/03/thread-needle-games-in-britain-united.html for a post about this game on my cultural blog.

They’re singing: “Nanny, Nanny, thread your needle/ Long, long thread/ Thread-oh, thread-oh/ Your long, long thread.” They’re pronouncing “thread” as “tread” and “your” as “yuh” the way most Jamaicans do when not speaking formal English.

I really don’t think tambu is solely just for entertainment why don’t you guys actually interview the dancers the drummer or whoever is the lead of the group?? I heard quadrille and Maypole is fake not truly true to our roots girl bye bout "very Jamaican" very white washed you mean?? Lol I’m not gonna have any filter on my platform I think Jonkunnu is telling a story about how whites and their cruelty affected us. Also mocking them at the same time in a way especially doing it around Christmas time I'm gonna do more research. This is just my opinions but I’m not taking every word JIS is spilling to me and you guys should not either always do your own research
