My website is www.bucklehurstleather.co.uk for high quality handmade leather belts, bags, axe covers, tool rolls etc.
In this film Dr Damian Goodburn, one of Britain's leading specialists in ancient woodworking, shows the Bodgers how he hews a log to create a beam.
Damian has a great knowledge of ancient worked timbers and woodworking tools, and gave a very interesting demonstration of log hewing using his fascination collection of specialist axes.
Damian frequently works with archaeologists to provide advice and insights into past carpentry techniques, based on the evidence of ancient worked timber, and by using reconstruction archaeology to compare his woodworking tool marks to those left behind in ancient timbers.
I hope you enjoy the film.

This is great! There are tons of hewing videos out there but rarely is there an explanation or narration into the actual reasoning of the hewing method.

I love watching your videos. I live in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee, U.S., and am learning all I can about the traditional woodcrafts. Your videos are very informative and have helped me with many of my own projects. Thanks!

I have a practical application for this. I'm slabbing up logs using an Alaskan sawmill, a chainsaw in a jig, and I need to start with a flat surface. Rather than setting up rails over the log and cutting my first flat edge, I'm trying to learn how to do it with a hewing axe. This tutorial is hugely helpful.

Thanks for sharing another interesting and informative film Harry, the thing I really enjoy about your channel is the wide variety of subjects that you cover and even though at first you may not see it, they are all related in some form. Thanks for your dedication to posting these films and the hard work that must go into making them,it is very much appreciated Harry! N.

Thanks Neil for commenting on the connections...I do try to keep some sort of relation between my films so I really appreciated you noting that. That said, next weeks film that I am just finalising will be a bit of a challenge when it comes to making connections, but it does reflect life.....and there will be some inspirational carving from the WW1 era!

I like all the specific side axes as they look cool. But I reckon they were used in the construction of posher buildings for example old churches have very nicely straight lined beams but a barn on the other hand is like anything goes and you can tell they just used whatever ax they had to hand.

Thank you! I believe the chalk-line demonstration shows what I have been suspecting -- that you should pull the line directly up, and not just away from the core of the log. I also appreciate seeing how a knowledgeable person would hold a broad axe, and how hard to swing it.

GREAT VIDEO SIR. Which modern Gransfers bruks axe or wetterlings axe do you suggest is suitable for both stages of the hewing procedure...roughing out then fine shaving into a flat surface ? THANKS AGAIN.

I am probably wrong but isn't there evidence of Scandinavians of that period using gull wing axes especially in shipbuilding? He didn't seem to think so but i have heard the opposite from multiple other reliable resources!

Hi Jack - its only about 25 - 30 miles from me....but I have not been there - looks very interesting - I see there is a website for Hayle Mill but not much on it. There is also Simon Barcham Green's fascinating website that provides a lot of information on the mill and its history, and there is a u tube film: Papermaking by hand at Hayle Mill, England in 1976. see you at the Ball, Regards Harry

Finally--a chisel-edged broadaxe being used. I wouldn't attempt to flatten a log with a conventional axe.
