Growing and harvesting crops for the winter is vital when living in a secluded and semi-abandoned village. June means Cherry Season and it’s time to make homemade compotes, jams and juices- all of which require no refrigeration! In the olden days, before the luxury of refrigerators, farmers would rely on naturally preserved jars of fruits, vegetables and meats. The same goes for us today, with the difference that we no longer burry fresh meat under snowy ground to last the winter. Join us today as we make Homemade Tart Cherry Juice and Compotes- all of which you can make at home!

ABOUT ME:
Hi guys!
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

Thank you for bringing us back the knowledge of yesteryear, so many people today have no idea how to make this. I remember my mother doing something very similar and we had a cellar full of 'canned' fruit, juices and jams to see us through the winter.

Laurie, You bring back such fond memories for me. My Baba loved cherries and would make compote out of apples from our apple tree here in USA. They had a huge cherry tree in the old house in Bansko. Your cherries look so good! Life is good in the celo! Keep living the life and loving it there!

I just canned cherries last week here in the USA (Arkansas). I wish we could buy the type of canning system used all over the world like yours. I will never understand why I can’t buy that kind here. Thanks for the cool video. I like to see people from all over the world that live like I do here. I had to cut my nails off they were so stained but it was worth it!

That’s so great! We jarred another batch last week and I think we are good to go for the winter (as far as cherries go). 😮 If you like I can see if I can find this canning system in the store next time I go to the town. Ours is very old passed down to us from our grandparents so I’m not sure if they still sell them but I can definitely take a look! If I find it I can either send it to you from here (though shipping will probably take a while and be a bit expensive) or I can send it back to the USA with my mom and sister next time they come. They are planning to come to Bulgaria soon for the summer. Let me know if you want me to look 😊

bing cherries are popular in US, my neighbor's tree hung over the fence and dumped in our yard which was great: July means blackberries here and it can last until early September depending on rainfall and weather.

What’s really amazing is that these trees have not been maintained by human hands for 5 years… they have essentially become wild trees and look how fruitful they are! Nature does not need our help 🍃 🌍

Interesting ........I kinda did the same but my recipe i just sanitized my jars and then added the washed cherries pit and all into jars , added the sugar , sealed and set on a balcony where they could get sunlight , i believe it was six or eight weeks , the juice separated from the cherry and they settled on the bottom and it was crystal clear red , transparent even . Very sweet , but i added a bit of vodka and cherry brandy to it as the recipe called for and honestly it was amazing . I have three cherry varieties right now and actually have two trees started from store bought cherries .......not for our zone but this is there second season so hoping.Love the flowers , and cherry tree , has a lot of history !Laurie What zone is Bulgaria ? Reason i ask is i buy flower seeds from different parts of the world and you show some very interesting flowers from time to time ............enjoy your fruits of your labor

Oooooo cherry brandy and vodka sounds so great in these compotes! You just gave me such a brilliant idea 😋. I had no idea the compotes could process in sunlight… this is very interesting. Bulgaria falls into two climate zones: In the North we fall into a continental climate and in the South we fall into a Mediterranean climate. Winters are cold and we do get a good amount of snow. Summers are very warm but dry (it is rarely humid in Bulgaria). 🇧🇬 🌺 🌸

@sistersofbulgaria9396

It sounds like your recipe is a bit different than our. Our compotes are more of “juice”. We also make thick syrups from time to time but I don’t like sweet very much. I also don’t like the fruits inside very much (I prefer just the juice) so we make ours are more watery and with less fruit. We sterilize the jars before and after because this is the recipe passed down to us but you can just rinse the jars before and sterilize by boiling like you said 🙂

Your video is very nice. I researched your channel and found that there are quite a few subscribers but still the videos are not getting many views. Because your video is not going in front of many people. I think doing SEO can solve the problem. Because after doing SEO, when someone searches for a video related to your video on KZfaq, they will see your video first. Moreover, KZfaq will automatically move your videos in front of them. Then you will get new subscribers and viewers. Your video’s SEO score is 38/100. Solve this problem then you will get more subscribers and viewers. Thank you.

Thanks so much for this comment. I noticed a serious drop in views a few months ago and think I confused the youtube algorithm. I post videos that split into two topics essentially: Moving from City Life to Farm Life and Life in Bulgaria (because this is where I moved). I have been researching what SEO is since reading your comment. Do you know where I can do the best SEO research? Also, how were you able to tell my SEO score? Are you using VidIQ? Thanks so much! 😊
