Traditional winter travel and camping are a lot of hard work! On this short 3 day trip, you will see techniques of traditional winter camping and travel across frozen lakes in Algonquin Provincial Park. This style of traditional winter travel and camping has been adopted from Indigenous peoples and when done correctly it makes the sometimes harsh winter season extremely enjoyable and livable.
Join Alec and Paige as they haul their handmade toboggans loaded with gear, a Snowtrekker canvas hot tent, and a wood stove. Using traditional style snowshoes to travel 25km through the wilderness, navigating ice-covered and sometimes slush-covered lakes. This route is a modified version of the popular Canoe Lake Loop in Algonquin, an area they know well in open water seasons but have never experienced in the winter.

LMAO with your stache! Awesome trip, very nice winter setup. I didn’t know you were both Algonquin guides in your past, that explains your extensive skills and stamina.

Hey Derek, I had no idea how bad it was until I looked at myself in the camera haha 😂 ...ya we've been guiding for many years, mostly canoeing but also rafting and ziplining. We still canoe guide in Algonquin a bit each summer. I have learned a lot from my guiding experiences! Hopefully I'll still be guiding when I'm old and gray 😄 Thanks for watching!

The best part is the hot drink, warm tent and blazing hot partner. Winter camping is for close friends only.

We dont see that too often that kind of video where the hot tent is move everyday up to the next spot , such hard work to do everyday , even more so with the deep snow and the slushy lakes , my god ! It takes a lot of determination to wake up each day , pack everything , open the trail , and reset the camp each night 😵‍💫 , so the only thing I can say to you guys is " chapeau " like we say in french , Thanks for the video , Sylvain, Québec

Thank you for the very nice compliment! We've worked to simplify our systems and get more efficient with everything we do. We're still learning more and more about this style of camping but were definitely hooked on it! I'm very glad you appreciated this adventure. Merci mon ami!

It was a memorable one for Paige and me. I love how at different temperatures the sound of the snow can change so dramatically. When it's really cold it sounds like you're walking on styrofoam! Thanks for watching 🙂

Hey Christian, I love hearing that you enjoyed the video! Our Snowtrekker hot tent is pretty awesome. It always amazes me that we can fit everything we need to live comfortably outdoors in the winter on 2 toboggans. We're almost in Quetico now, I will be sharing about that experience when we get back. Thanks for watching!

We definitely could have made the trip 1 day longer but we are still learning our limits with winter travel. I am lucky to have a partner who takes care of food on trip and cooking most camp meals, that's for sure. Thank you for watching 🙂
