Trailblazer Instrument Cluster Dead! ~~By just re-connecting the plug and moving it around it worked for 2 years before I sold it~~. That must have re-connected a Solder Joint ...somewhere.... and got my by. Hopefully my story helps someone.

I have a 2002 trailblazer and the same exact situation happened to me. I parked it for about 6 months and then when I went to start driving it again, the cluster wasn't working. Tried wiggling the same plug and it started working! Thanks for your video!

THANK YOU for giving me the helpful info and courage to tackle the same problem on my old vans Instrument Cluster. Had to completly remove dismantel the cluster and check it... IT WORKS NOW.

On another channel, a guy soaked that connector in alcohol overnight, then took a hair dryer and dried it. He claimed there is oxidation that forms on the pins and when plugged into the connector prevents electrical transference. He had. a F150, but he said it worked both times many years apart.

I have an aftermarket stereo in my 2005 and I don’t have an issue with the cluster not keeping mileage, but I never swapped it with a factory unit. It initially had the touchscreen navigation until it was parked one day on the crack head side of town.

Thanks for sharing. The exact same thing happened to my trail blazer. Parked for a week during a cold snap got in it yesterday and dash borad gauges would not work. Gonna try to fix it myself.

Mines just like that. My windows don't work. sunroof too. And just the heat works only no cold air just heat. Was bad in summer the heat

Your correct about the weather because when mine starte messing up it was winter and the when warm weather came back it started working again. Until the following winter.

I have a 2004 Trailblazer, and about 10 years ago, it started doing that thing where the gauges would all spin around randomly and also not return to zero when the key was turned off. I would be going about 15 and the speedo might say 125, etc. There were several places that charged 600 or more dollars to replace all of the gauge actuator motors. I pulled the cluster out and found some slight corrosion all over the back of the cluster's circuit board. I work on computers, so I had an ESD pad and grounded myself. Then, I cleaned the entire rear of the circuit board with 98% rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Reinstalled the cluster and it has been working ever since. The cynical part of me thinks that the shops charging 600 dollars plus are just doing this and laughing all the way to the bank.

Nah, more then likely they are just going to replace it. Just so you don’t come back with the same problem. They’re to dumb to save themselves money like this. Don’t give them any ideas.

They reflow all connections and replace all 5 motors. You can buy the kit and take to a shop that does electronic repair like laptop work.

I'm having the same problem right now with my Honda Civic 2001. Sometimes the gauges come back to life but for a short time only then go back to being dead again.

I bought a kit on Ebay and changed all the stepper motors on my 04 Envoy. Maybe you should try to just re solder all the connections with some fresh solder if it happens again . Replacing the steppers was easy and relatively cheap. Didn't know about the radio. Thanks

Mines was loose battery cable connection I suppose. When I tightened the battery cables a little more mines started working! Possession perhaps?

I don’t see how that fixed anything unless it was a corroded connector. That video is old now. Do you still have it and is it still working without and further diagnostics or repairs?

If I remember right not only does the radio do what you said it is also part of the alarm if the truck has it, you change the radio and the truck wont start!!!! fyi

Also I found out that changing the cluster will change the miles....what a mess...lol Most of these clusters are always broken from lights to no working gauges.....ugh..

The radio was removed from my Trailblazer and laying in the back seat when I bought it. It started and ran with no problems and all the gauges worked properly and it showed the odometer and the odometer worked fine. Now the driver door window switch will cause problems with the alarm and it isn't just a switch, it is a module and will mess up all sorts of things. If you have problems with the cluster and change it, that will change your odometer reading because that is stored in an Eprom inside the cluster.

DONT tap it, Bang it or soccer kick it, it only make whatever is wrong worse. Take it out, visiually inspect it like you did or even better just FIX it ! Magnifying glass comes in handy or chase granny around & snatch her glasses for 10 mins & check all solder points.🤔

The information is NOT stored in the radio! There is an EEPROM in the cluster itself that stores the information for the cluster. It can be reprogrammed to correct mileage if you replace the cluster, but it takes a special programmer to do this. The radio has nothing to do with it.

But you still need the radio for it to work for the alert system. Aftermarket radio Car Audio GM General Motor Radio Interface Harness will make it happy.

I'm about to buy a used one from a private seller. He said he is having issues with the cluster. He said only the gas and the oil gauge aren't working so that would be the cluster right? Also would this affect the mileage? It seems to have low mileage for a 2004. Just curious on any opinions on this??

different clusters will show different mileage.

Nothing is working on mine except the check engine light and the back lights. All of the gauges are dead as well as all of the other indicator lights. Although sometimes it just comes on. Sometimes it Comes on if I tap it.

@@hillardrodrick it's a damaged plug. I put a different cluster in it and it worked for about 6 months efore doing the same thing. I think the power wire clip I side the plug at the end of the wire harness is heat damaged. Probably the co nectors are to small and are heating up.

So sometimes all my lights come on and all my gages drop and stop working then the car eventually ends ups cutting off do you think this problem could be in the cluster helpppp lol

Also if the gauge cluster lights don’t work there is a fuse box under back seat on drivers side. 2 10a fuses.. I forgot which 2. What he’s doing seems to be worse case scenario

What could be the problem if while driving all of a sudden all the dashboard lights come on and all the gauges stop working? My 2003 trailblazer has been doing this off and on for a month. And a bell starts digging also. Any help appreciated.

Check for a ground connection on the inside passenger foot well panel.

I noticed you said that the mileage was stored in the radio. I swapped out my radio long ago. It is not a direct plug and play. I had to run a separate 12v switched source and fuse and I lost ability to adjust the door lock settings. (Because the stock radio makes the indicator tone) However, my mileage and other info has remained intact Why? I'm thinking it's not in the radio or the door switch cpu since I've changed that too. Thank for helping me with that instrument cluster, had the exact same problem.

@@FixingWithPassion they probably tied to an existing harness source instead of running a separate 12v. I know some of the wires run from the door switch to the instrument cluster, then on the radio. You can adjust several setting via the door switch, dash indicator lights, and the radio. I'd imagine hooking to one of those wires would cause a problem even though the wire would read 12v.

@@FixingWithPassion The mileage and stuff isn't stored in the radio, it is stored in the instrument cluster in the Eprom chip. When I bought my Trailblazer, the radio wasn't installed in it, just laying in the back seat. The previous owner had an aftermarket radio and removed it prior to getting rid of it. Everything worked fine when I test drove it and drove it home.

@Benjamin Doss You would think so, but on these GM vehicles, they store it inside the instrument cluster for some reason. That is why if you swap out the instrument cluster for a used one, it will show the mileage of the vehicle it came out of. The instrument cluster also has the VIN stored in it for some reason. That is why when you replace the instrument cluster, it has to be reprogrammed for the vehicle it is going in.

My Silverado has the same problem. Seems like all the chevys from that time period have this problem. Why hasn’t Chevy made a recall? Why are we stuck with this problem if it’s clearly a factory defect? Chevy needs to recall all trucks that have this problem.

PAUSE at just before 3:00..My wife’s 02 trailblazer has an aftermarket Headunit. Her odometer still lights up. You’re giving misleading information saying that the odometer won’t work after removing factory radio with an aftermarket

True. That mileage is stored in the car's computer. The radio will lock out if you get another similar GM radio, though.
