Just failed state inspection for bad upper ball joints on my '08 Trailblazer. That, and they said my rear stabilizer links were bad. Once I realized they were talking about the sway bar link, I found your other video on replacing those. These videos are a great help in getting this stuff figured out and saving money. THANK YOU!!

Nathan, Thank you, thank you. Your videos are a such relief. Always an accurate tutorial of what someone will be confronted with (rust and all) with a real time frame, and basic tools. Your explanation of the short comings of even the largest ball joint kit was aaasuch a help. No other videos deal with this problem. I didn’t even go back for the add-on kit. Just took a grinder to it and used your socket suggestion. As the ball joint starting moving I sprayed silicone into the gap of the boot. A small tube type wire brush, fine sand paper and some silicone spray made the install easy. Silicone spray makes so many things easier to remove and install. I’m surprised more folks don’t use it. Exhaust rubber hangers, robber boots, plastic clips and clamps are other uses. It dissipates quickly, unlike other lubricants and no lingering smell.

Watching from Farmington, New Mexico. I'm gonna tackle my ball joints in the morning along with driver side lower bushings. I'll be doing that while I wait for my transfer case motor and control module to show up on Friday. One thing...I am not a car mechanic. I have been a Machinist for over 30 years. It's embarrassing to watch me wrench on vehicles. But I can make a lathe sit up, roll over and bring me in the morning paper.

Nathan, Well done. I think I memorized this video😁. What started out as a loud roar ended up coming from the passenger front side. Lower ball joint and tie rod was finished which I suspected wore out the axle bearing as well. I purchased the ball joint tools, upper and lower ball joints and a new tie rod and new axel bearing hub. Test ride proved to be the fix. Thank you again for the numerous videos you have put out.

One more thing. I've learned that when you replace one side on anything do the other side also. I realize finances are not the same for everyone but, if you can afford to do both sides at once, make it one job not two. It has been my experience if one side fails the other will fail. Parts on a trailblazer like to die together lol

Great video. Thanks for all of the information. On this 2002 I am doing I pulled the knuckle off to remove the upper ball joint. Very easy. On the lower I cheated and pulled out an oxy/acet torch to heat the knuckle. Beating it out was a breeze. Still took force but progress was immediate. I think even propane would help.

Just wanted to thank you for the video. As long as I was going to have everything torn out I decided to do it all. I did both control arms, both ball joints, the outer tie rods and the sway bars (on both sides). Looking at the parts after I'm glad I did the bushings were almost shot on most of them and I'm sure I would have been going back in to replace eventually. It was a long weekend but I figured it was worth the $1500+ I saved. I took it to my trusted mechanic after for an alignment and also asked him to give it a once over and he gave it an A+ on the install. Some notes for others attempting it: -I went through half a can of penetrating lube but I felt like it really helped. I hit one side the day before so it could soak, the nuts and bolts came off relatively easy. I tried one on bolt the right side before spraying it and thought my arm was going to come off. Since I was done for the day I sprayed everything down for the night. The next day they broke free a lot easier. I also sprayed often and liberally when working. Tapping with the hammer also helped immensely. -I bought the lower control arm with the bracket. It was an extra $30 but I think it made removal and installation easier. It also had the lower ball joint already pressed in which was so nice to not have to deal with. -I struggled a lot with the upper ball joint both removing and installing. The first one I did with the knuckle attached as Nathan showed. The second I took the knuckle off and did it on my workbench. I found having it off worked better for me. So if you are struggling with it on, try it off. Mine was pretty bad and I had to resort to pressing in and out with an impact on the c-clamp. I hated to do it but it wasn't happening otherwise. I'm going to need to do my wife's at some point and I've decided when it comes time -I'm taking the knuckle off and going to my mechanic. He said he'd remove and install them for me for like $20, totally worth it. -The upper control arm is a PITA because it's so narrow to reach the bolt. There is no way to do it quickly. if you can get your hands on a thinner "service wrench" or grind a normal wrench so it's thinner your life is a lot easier. Unless you are willing to cut a notch for more room (I wasn't). Not hard but time consuming, it was 30-40 minutes just to unbolt and rebolt. -I also replaced the break pads as long as I had everything apart. Consider doing breaks and rotors if you are close to needing them. It adds an extra 15 minutes tops. -The one issue I had after I put it all back together was my anti-lock breaks were kicking on. I was tired of working on the truck so I let my mechanic fix it. There is a sensor inside the wheel bearing that the ABS sensor reads that went bad. My guy said it's possible that all the banging on the knuckle to loosen it could have hastened it's demise but it probably would have went eventually. It was pretty corroded, so I had to really pound the bejusus out of it. I only point it out in case your anti-locks kick-on when done you'll know what it is. Thanks again Nathan. It was a fun project and I really learned a lot about my truck in the process. I was way outside of my comfort zone. The most complex thing I've ever done is replacing my tire on my motorcycle. Your detailed video helped a ton!

Fyi buy quality ball joints spend a little extra money so you don't have to do it twice. Also you can buy the full control arm online at RockAuto and it takes a lot of the frustration out of this whole process because it comes with the ball joints installed. The price difference is about 40 to $50

Thank you for this great video but I have to correct you that the axle nut is 35mm (not 36mm!). Also it is not good idea to remove the abs sensor from the hub as they get so stuck over time you will most likely damage it. You dont actually need to remove the entire abs wire but just free 2 clips znd set the knuckle on the side on a step stool (I made a small stool out of 2x12 joists). Your upper control arm bushings are also shot. Before separating the lower ball joint to steering knuckle I like to leave the nut just a turn or two on the ball joint, that way it doesnt drop suddenly when you hit it with hammer. Also to remove the lower joint I used some heat (mapp gas to heat the lower control arm), but not alot, just enough...there is shock bushing close by and you dont want the heat to destroy it. Once I got it to move I used the press and it did come out easily. On installation use some engine oil and if you put the new one in the freezer the day before it should install easily.

It's about as hot as it ever gets up here in New Hampshire upper 90s Nice ball joint clinic. That lower one seems tough. I've seen your Taurus ball joint videos. Easy peezy in comparison, replaced them myself, there's only one on each side. Been doing my usual summer body work. Fiberglass, body filler, rust conversion. What's next on the Trailblazer.
