Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are finally beginning to work on the biggest route to date, the path to the coal mine! This route is a super long rail that has to travel the entire side of the map so I decided to spend this episode finding our way there and creating some initial foundation pieces to see if it will even be possible for trains to do later!

You might want to use Railroads Online Extended mod. Gives you a map of your rail network, also a mini map in-game, and you can remote throw switches and remote control trains (as long as they are fired). Also you can teleport to the other sites and to locomotives, overall a very useful tool and it works with MP (only host needs to have it).

Be cool if the developers added something like npc workers that spawn at depot and want to hire you to take them to a random stop (coal mine , iron mine or any other stop) that reduces costs of manufacturing for a limited time at that location or you get cash to take them there.

This looks like an amazining route: beautiful vistas and the inclination never exceeds 3%! Very much looking forward to the final trail. I do have a request: could you draw your railway network over the in game map? I don't always find it easy to translate what parts in game correspond to what parts on the map and having an approximate overview of your endeavours would be very nice to have.

I agree i was happy with the free logging. I always thought you should be payed for the logs, considering the fact that the railroad is clearly being created to fuel the logging industry. It would be awesome if the logs you cut down had to be delivered from the freight depot to the sawmill, and if too many pile up you can’t cut down any more.

11:18 well, Bluewizard has done a route from the sawmill direct to the coal mine by climbing to the same level as a CERTAIN CUTTING in the ridgeline, high up a VERTICAL CLIFFSIDE above the iron ore mine valley. I've also seen a few dips in the hillside that remind me of potential cuttings for trackbeds (possibly the devs giving us a hand, like the ridicolous grade to the iron mine). I have spoken to Bluewizard and a few others on DC, they all are against a branchline to the coal mine starting out from the iron ore mine, but to me, it seems possible (though I'l quite possibly need the Climax and a few switchbacks..) Also from my experience, it's better to build a route going UP a mountain rather than coming DOWN a mountain.

For the end of the track, I suggest that instead of a loop, you should do a run-around siding that they have in real life. Would make it much more realistic, and much less chance for a train to derail in the tight loop curve.
@kuhljager2429

4% is an extremely steep incline when talking about freight trains. Ideal is 1%. It's all about how many wheels are receiving power and the weight of your train. So things like subways can get away with steeper gradients like 4-5% because their cargo is lighter and they tend to have more powered wheels (for instance every single car on a metro is powered) That's why In the mountains they tended to use geared locos such as climax's, shay's, and heisler's. Basically 4 wheel drive but on rails. Allowed track layers to lay track on steeper sections rather than take the time to blast and remove terrain for an ideal incline. Also shorter trains on those mountain lines, like 5-10 cars average

Im late to the party so I dont know who all will see this, but IIRC from watching a developer stream, the reason there seem to be ideal paths for rails like here and at the iron mine is that, in the lore of the game, a previous rail company had rail lines in these locations. So the paths through the mountains are actually old railbeds

Just a thought. Why not add short lines to the individual locations with smaller engines on the lines. Then one or two main lines that carries product long distances. So you have products produced, shunted by the short line to the mainline reload. Stronger mainline locomotive drives load to short line reload. Unhooks load, short line shunter then pushes it to the target destination. Just a thought

You could leap a slightly curved bridge across that first horseshoe from the coal mine rather than going around the tight curve

I've not heard you say if you can or not go below grade for laying track... that's what's really called a 'cut'. There's some places which I'm sure you can appreciate would make for much more even trackwork if you could cut down a few feet only to end up coming out level again some distance away. Yeah, i'm definitely going to be burning a lot of hours in this game once I get the new machine set up.

I do think you should make this line a giant loop. The way back can be a 5% grade

coal goes to the iron works so you might want to go from the fraight depot to ironworks then to the coal mine

Since the detour us so long and there is some flat areas I would think you would have some room to put a fule station (water tower/sand tower) because a grade of 3 precent for a long time, even with it going down and up, might drain sand and fule. I don't know and am half tempted to get this game. I think because there is so much room at the top of the coal mine you could make a storage yard that if you wanted could do something where you store coal cars that you fill up and then hook up to them and take them all in a large batch per say. That or you can store the set of cars that you need for that specific industry there (coal needs beams and rails so have cars for that like how the iron mine needs beams and planks)
