Today on Workshop Wednesday it is the first wednesday of the month so it is Tool of the Month time! We have decided that on the first Wednesday of the month we will look at a tool we have purchased. We often buy tools for the workshop, some new and some secondhand.
The tool we review today is a trailer light tester. This is not an expensive tool and it is designed to test the trailer socket on the car and also to the trailer lights. We were very pleased with this tool and glad we bought it

That's a good tool and it got me searching Amazon. It costs $18 Canadian right now. I am so glad that the cameraman's genetic composition has been confirmed: I was wondering if he was infact a robot but to see him (or part of him) show up in this video has given me great satisfaction. Good point on testing from the driver seat that a fault could be in the extension cable. Speaking about cables, I hear on the news this week that the UK has passed a requirement that future electronics, cameras and phones will share one common charger. This will eliminate the hundreds of different adapters needed for your devices. It will also help reduce waste. iPhones are going to be challenging this ruling because they do not want to give up their lightening connector. This trailer light tester may well find itself on my shelf someday soon. Great explaination. keep up the good work, and so nice to see the cameraman in this one!!
@GardenTractorBoy
@GardenTractorBoy Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Do you have the same trailer plugs as us or are yours the same as the USA or yet another standard? I think the cameraman wants to be paid extra if he is on camera, not sure how much extra for just a hand :-) A standard charger would be good but I think I heard this before and Apple did not backdown. Take care
@EverydayProjects
@EverydayProjects Жыл бұрын
@@GardenTractorBoy Our trailer plugs are the same as the USA with either a 7-pin or 4-flat connector. The second plug you showed us for charging the trailer battery and to allow for reverse lights is incorporated in the 7-pin connector but the 4-flat only has brake, tail and signal light function. I am glad that the cameraman is overcoming his shyness---maybe we'll see more of him in future videos. Please note that I rarely show up in my own videos except in a reflection. Some say I'm just a figment of your imaginations!😅
@EverydayProjects
@EverydayProjects Жыл бұрын
Correction...the 7-pin connectors we use don't have a wire for reverse lights but most caravans (trailers) don't have those lights included. They are on the vehicle only as far as I know. Maybe some trailers do have the white reverse light too but I haven't see that.

How's she goin'? The trailer light tester is a must have if you have a trailer. It seems with trailers, around here anyways, the trailer lights never work, so testing them before you get underway is always a good idea. Nice tester, luckily my truck and trailer only has a 4 pin connector, very easy to test with a battery and small jumpers. It would be more complicated if I had trailer brakes.
@GardenTractorBoy
@GardenTractorBoy Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I knew your connectors were different but I have never seen one. I am struggling to work out what is missing from our 7 pin connector to give 4. I guess you do not have rear fog lights and maybe the rear tail lights are on one pin not two. Assuming you have LH and RH indicator and earth, does that mean the 4th is a combined brake and tail light? Take care
@larrybl
@larrybl Жыл бұрын
@@GardenTractorBoy On my 4 pin connector, pin 1 is ground, pin 2 is tail/marker, pin 3 & 4 are LH & RH brake lights. This is all that is required for small trailers. If I upgrade to a larger trailer I will need a brake controller and an 5 pin connector. I had to make an adapter for when I borrow my neighbors trailer. I'll do a video on my trailer and connectors when it get dark, you might find interesting.

As far as I am aware this will only test the 12N plug and socket, I believe it is supplementary socket and plug otherwise known as 12S that has a permanent live. We have not tried but as the pin layout is different I suspect it will not test the 12S plug/socket. I hope this helps, take care

So to test the car lights you need a cable long enough to go into cab?
@GardenTractorBoy
@GardenTractorBoy 18 күн бұрын
It is not essential to use a long extension cable but doing so enables you to do the tests from inside the car which makes it easier. Without an extension cable the tester plugs directly into the towing electrical socket. I hope that helps. Take care

Price £14.69 now, March, 5 months later. Call it 50% rise in price. Glad I got it though. Another £5 to post to France -- still cheaper than buying here. Left and Right indicators were working the wrong way 'round when I replaced beat up plug (and socket). Thought it may be something to do with left hand drive car. Maybe yellow at the top (1) should switch with green at the bottom (4). That would have worked but wouldn't have been the correct solution. Watched lots of vids in English and French and saw lots of graphics. None really explained that the schematic shown was viewed from behind the fitting not looking face on. The numbering 1-6 (forget 7, it's in the middle) is clockwise when viewed from behind, inside, and anti-clockwise when you're looking directly at the pins when assembled. A limitation: it showed all working fine when in fact Left and Right indicators were reversed, as mentioned. I traced it to a problem where the wires were spliced into the loom the wrong way 'round: it was obvious -- the yellow was connected to green and vice versa!! What IDIOT did that?? Answer: me. Have been driving around like that for over ten years.
@GardenTractorBoy
@GardenTractorBoy Жыл бұрын
That is a big price rise. The wiring on these seven pin sockets can be confusing, I think we have seen a diagram showing the pins from the front which is much easier to work through. It is so easy to make a mistake with trailer wiring and I guess if you had one of these testers ten years ago, it would have helped a lot. Take care
@johncollins8304
@johncollins8304 Жыл бұрын
@@GardenTractorBoy Thanks but no, it wouldn't have helped at all, let alone a lot. It actually put me on the wrong scent because all it did was tell me there was electricity coming in but didn't tell me I'd cocked up the wires! So I thought all was well!
