Come with us for a trip along the Delaware River and see how we handle trailering an express cruiser. From hook up, to launch, to recovery, grab some tips you can use, or just enjoy the scenery. It's a beautiful day for heading to the boat ramp and cruising out of Burlington, NJ toward Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

Our mission is to cruise amazing places and cities on our boat without taking days, weeks, or months to get to our destination. Work and family life take up a ton of time. But, that doesn't mean you can't still cruise without having a liveaboard. So, we bought the biggest express cruiser we would want to tow on a regular basis and started "land cruising" our trailered boat to all of the wonderful boating locations on the East Coast of the United States and beyond.

Hi makatkplt. It depends a lot on the ramp. Some ramps are fine at low, others we can't touch at low. The slope is really important.

Great video that I happened to stumble upon. We just bought a Rinker Fiesta Vee 270 and are planning on trailering it for the same reasons. Currently rebuilding the trailer and upgrading to disc brakes as well. I’m making a series of videos about the trailer rebuild and will make some about the boat as well. Recently moved down to Southwest Florida and looking forward to exploring the Gulf and Barrier Islands as well as The Keys. Great video! Looking forward to more…safe travels!

3:01 *Wow, those are wise words.* We currently have a Sea Ray 225 Weekender (24 foot LOA, cuddy cabin) and in the early stages of planning to upgrade to a Sea Ray 260 Sundancer, loaded including a generator, for all the reasons stated at the 3 minute mark in this video. Previously had a much larger boat and we enjoyed it, but it was too big for us to tow. It was kept in a wet slip. Again, it was fine, we had fun, but every boat trip started and ended in the same spot. We were limited to one body of water. By the way, I love how you two work well together.

Doug, thank you so much for the thoughtful and kind comments. Good luck with the new boat! I am such a believer that there is a whole segment of boating that people are missing out on. The idea of a “land cruising” with a trailered boat opens up so many possibilities for those of us that can’t live aboard full time, and don’t want to take days or weeks to get to a destination, but still want to experience staying somewhere on the water. We have been lucky to stay in so many wonderful spots from NYC to DC in just one summer. It would never have been possible to do while maintaining a normal work and family schedule without trailering. I hope you continue to join us, and let me know what you’d love to see on the channel. So happy to have you with us!

@doug Ales I just bought a 89 sea ray 300 weekender 32ft and I have never owned a boat of this magnitude so I see you owned one or very similar, do you know anything about trailering this ??? I didn't want to keep it at a slip all the time I wanted to get it out and take it from location to location , any positive help or suggestions from anyone would be appreciated

I tow my 34’ cabin cruiser everywhere. 23,000 miles in 4 years. Boat and trailer weigh right at 22,000 lbs. it’s extremely easy and tons of fun.

👋 Hello there fellow 2565er! We absolutely love ours. The bright cabin makes it feel so much bigger. We couldn’t imagine going to a “cave like” cabin with small port lights after this boat. Totally spoiled by it!

Ha! Our goal was to go with a comfortable boat that you can spend a week on and still trailer without going to a big rig. Sure, a 2500HD or bigger would be great, but they're expensive and we're well within the Titan's towing capacity and capability. Maybe some day...

That is a really nice boat and I have the exact same truck... I'm looking to get a bigger boat from my 18' Mariah, what size is your Regal? Also my Titan is a 2007 which I'm in the process of upgrading to the larger Armada brakes... do you find the brakes on your truck to be a little to be desired? Nissan up the size of the brakes on the 2008+ model years.... Great video man and thanks in advance if you end up answering my questions.

Actually I've found the brakes to work well. I haven't had any feeling of the trailer "pushing" us even during hard braking. We do have disc brakes on both trailer axles though which is much better than the often standard (and illegal in some states) single axle brakes. Technically, the trailer should be braking most of its own weight.

Hi John! Our boat weighs 5960# empty. Add in 72gal of fuel and 20gal of water which is approx 800#. Put in another 500# of equipment and were shy of 7500#. We went with an aluminum trailer to save weight and upgraded to 4-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power. The truck tows it surprisingly well. I always lock out O/D when towing. It will run 70mph on the highway easily. Although, we boat mostly in flatland areas. I would taking things much easier in hilly areas. Hope this helps.

Hi bestamerica. I'm with you. The trailer has a small yellow light on each side just under the winch. But I think there should be more - especially when backing across a road at night. Was thinking about adding LED strips down each side. Any recommendations that would survive being dunked?

Boating CAVU, I just bought a Four Winns Vista 268 . I own a 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi. 2 wheel drive. Is this enough truck to launch at the ramp?

Congrats on the boat! I certainly see a bunch of Rams at the ramp. I would just be careful about ramp conditions. Dipping the back tires or a slippery ramp can be an issue with 2WD. Of course, always follow your truck’s towing guidance.

That looks like a heavy boat for a half ton truck. Have you considered using a weight distribution hitch with this trailer 🤔

It is an interesting thought. I’m familiar with weight distributing hitches on travel trailers. Unfortunately, most boat trailers are not compatible with weight distributing hitches. Boat trailers typically have surge brakes which wouldn’t work with one. To be safe, we made sure we are within towing limits for the truck, we have disc brakes on all wheels, and we beefed up the rear suspension on the truck with SuperSprings. It actually pulls (and stops!) nicely.

I have guides on my trailer my boat it’s a 32 foot boat I don’t even drive it on I just use the guides , just use my bow rope to guide the boat on the trailer and it works every time why these guys like to power their boat on the trailer I’ve seen a lot of damage , good video!

There are certainly ramps where powering on is needed. But, like you, we try to walk the boat on whenever we can. We have a through-hull pickup that's very close to a bunk. We can end up sitting on it if we're not careful. Thanks for the comment!

It depends on a bunch factors. Of course weight of the rig vs. towing capacity. But you also have to look at the beam of the boat. Many states limit road vehicles to 8’6” wide, so your beam can’t exceed that without resorting to wide loads. I personally think 4WD is also really important for getting a heavy boat back out of the water. Hope that helps.

What size boat will a f150 v8 4 W/D pull ?

That’s a great question, but really tough to answer specifically. Of course the loaded weight of the boat and trailer (and passengers and gear in the truck) has to be within the rated towing capacity of the truck. But lots of other factors come into play. Things like the type of brakes on the trailer, width of the boat and trailer (typically no more than 8-feet 6-inches in the U.S.), suspension, transmission gear ratio, and installed tow package. Plus, towing capacities will vary widely even for the same type of truck and engine depending on the model year and trim package. I wish I could give you a quick answer, but there’s a lot to figure out when choosing a tow vehicle. It’s probably worth a future video. ;)

Have u ever had any problems with the anchor hitting the roller?

Hi Blake. So, it depends on which roller. If you mean the roller on the pulpit, then we haven’t had any problems having the anchor hang up there. But I’m thinking you mean the roller bow stop on the trailer. If so, then yes! We’ve had it happen once or twice. If the ramp is steep and I back the trailer a little to far into the water, the anchor can catch on the trailer as the stern floats. In those cases, I kept the boat attached to the winch and carefully winched it out until I saw if it will catch. I then pulled the trailer a up a touch and let it float off from there. Not perfect, and maybe not the most efficient method, but it got the job done. I’d be interested to hear if you have a better way.

Congratulations!!! You’ll love it. There’s certainly a lot to get used to, but off the top of my head: don’t skimp on brakes (stopping is usually more important that starting), pay attention to the tow vehicle’s max towing capacity taking into account both the trailer and the boat weight (along with anything in the boat), and I really think 4WD is important. Too many times I’ve seen trucks struggle to get back up a ramp that’s a little slippery or when they get their back tires wet. 4WD with a “low” setting locks you hubs and gives you extra torque at all four wheels. It had made some pretty steep ramps really easy for us. Good luck! Check in on how it’s going.

So, just my experience, the four wheel drive makes a big difference. Sometime we have to dip the back wheels slightly in the water to float the boat depending on the slope of the ramp. It's really nice knowing that my front wheels are pulling. Plus, I always use 4 wheel low when launching and retrieving. With the extra torque she pulls up the ramp no sweat. Not to mention some ramps can get slick with growth. We are very careful with that and abort if we need to. No need to end up on a boating fail video! Every rig is different, and do what's right for you. This is just what I've found with ours.

Question I own a Honda ridlige and the boat is about 3500IB and it always slips on the water when I retrieve my boats it's 4wd and I bought a Chevy 2500 Duramax and a new that weights are 9000Ib and that truck was just fine so how do you do it with my old 2017 honda ridline?

I’ll start with, I don’t know much about the Ridgeline, so definitely refer to your owner’s manual. But, it sounds like it’s an AWD truck that sends most of the power to the front wheels and then some more to the back wheels if the fronts slip. When you’re on the ramp, all the weight of the boat is pressing on the rears and lifting the fronts slightly, so that may be causing it to slip a bit before it transfers power. You may need to lock it in 4WD mode when retrieving the boat to keep the power to all wheels at all times. Then once you are on level ground you go back to “AWD” mode. Check your owner’s manual to see what the procedure is to lock in 4WD. You might want to give that a shot, but take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah you don't say how you get the eye out of in-between the rollers when unloading. I have to let our some slack then back up and hit the brakes so it's back off. 88 searay weekender. 5000 pounds.

I did. I always use 4WD low regardless of ramp conditions. 4WD to me is a really important feature. Look no further than the other videos on here of people screeching tires at Black Point trying to pull their boats out. I definitely don't want to be on one of those channels for the wrong reasons!

The boat is 6,000 lbs, and we went with an aluminum trailer to help keep weight as low as possible.

youre in nj with a decent sized boat and youre playing with dirty river and waiting for tides to be able to do shxt while you got the atlantic ocean nearby, stop wasting a decent sized boat and use the thing! lol you wanna play over there all you need is a little aluminum skiff! i live on shark river

This is an awesome comment. And I couldn't agree more! This is why we think trailering has so many advantages. So, like you said, you don't waste your boat. Last year we spent 40 days on the boat over the summer with trips on the Potomac to Washington D.C., on the Chesapeake to Annapolis, Baltimore, and Chesapeake City. Down the Hudson to NYC. And up and down the NJ coast from Cape May to Ocean City. Plus, when we just want to do a quick local trip, we have the Delaware River practically in our backyard. Couldn't do that with a boat that lives in the water!

Nice boat but it seems way too big for a Titan. My sundancer 260 (26.5') and trailer is 9600 lbs dry.Titan max towing capacity is under 9.6k lbs you're likely above that with a loaded boat, fuel, supplies, and people. It's illegal and unsafe to tow above capacity - please be careful. There are other people on the road. Kids, family members. If you can afford a boat like that you can afford a bigger safer truck.

Hey Alex. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I agree that safety is first! The Regal is a good bit lighter than your boat and we went with an aluminum trailer to save more weight. All up, loaded and weighed we have a good margin under max towing. And because we want to ensure we have ample braking we opted for discs on all axles as well as the larger wheel option. But that doesn't mean anybody should be over confident in their rig, so caution is always part of the equation.

@@boatingcavu6127 Brakes on all axles was a great decision. I had a trailer built for my Robalo 2520 (a relatively heavy 25’ center console), and only had surge discs put on one axle. I had an older F350 to tow with, and still wish I’d went with brakes on both axles. I think EOH would be my choice for my next trailer, though.

I don't have any personal driving experience with EOH (Electric Over Hydraulic for anybody following along), but they do seem like a very interesting option. I understand you have to be careful to not submerge the actuator. But I really like the idea of having instant braking response and trailer brakes while backing down the ramp.

@@boatingcavu6127 That’s correct; however, that likely wouldn’t be an issue since the actuator is mounted pretty far forward on the tongue. Your vehicle’s (or aftermarket) brake controller also has to be compatible. Two major advantages are that with surge brakes, you don’t have any additional braking backing down a ramp but you do with EOH (like you mentioned). Also; if you tow thru hilly or mountainous terrain, EOH will eliminate brake increased heat/wear thats inherent with surge systems. I like the idea of being able to use a standard coupler to eliminate the jerkiness felt during stopping/starting and progressive braking.
