Some places it looks like the Pennsylvania between New York and Washington, others like the Southern Pacific in California and yet others like the Northern Pacific in Montana. Very interesting and the dinner looks very pre-Amtrak when it was still fun to eat on the train and before Amtrak turned it into something nasty.

Very interesting! What can you say about the travellers of this train? I mean, which kind of traveller chooses a so many hours lasting trip instead of flying? Travellers with heavy baggages? Cheaper tarifs? I think most of the people weren't travelling the whole trip, but used the train for part of it, for travelling only between two of the cities in which the train stops, didn't they?

They are very similar, especially for those old industry cities of China. in 1950s, USSR really helped China to create its own industry system. It basically was a copy of the Soviet version. The layout of cities, the buildings and roads, all the same. And in 1960s the two counties broke up, but the knowledge of Soviet engineers remained in China until late 1990s before China completely abandoned those stale design. The following 20 years witnessed a booming growth of China and those Soviet style things were mostly replaced by more modern sutff; but Roma was not built in one day, so you can see many things in striking common in the two counties. I can also see similarities in Czech, Poland and part of Germany. The reasons behind are probably the same.

Nice video, I noticed at Erlian that you got off the train for border formalities. I guess you wait at the station while the bogie change takes place rather than stay on as it seems the procedure going the other way?
@doc7austin
@doc7austin 8 жыл бұрын
I got off because I was stupid; The conductors recommended us to leave the train there, but if a passenger insisted, the pax could stay on the train; when i got off the train it was not clear whether the train will leave now for the boogie change or later; well, each pax had to pass through chinese border control in the station, but (if insisting) getting back onto the train

it is indeed better to stay on the train. It is already late evening and the boogie changing procedure including border control can take 2-3h go and sleep after watching the boogie change. Border control ( Chinese) will be on the train in no time, as the Chinese are equipped with mobile terminals for reading your passport. With new boogies the train will move the few km into Mongolia where the Mongolian border control will come on board. They will collect the passports and bring them back to you after an hour or so.

Both China and Russia (I'm talking about the part of Russia along the railway from Ulaan Ude to Moscow) is much safer than the United States (though both are slightly less safer than Japan or Singapore). For the whites, Mongolia is also a pretty safe country as long as you don't go to suburban Ulaanbaatar. So I really don't know what you're afraid of.

These use really old Chinese Type 22 carriages (manufactured between 1959-1994) and thus their maximum permissible speed is 120 km/h, which feels really dated and old when compared to the Beijing - Ulan Bator trains that uses the somewhat new 25G carriages

There is NO JUMP OFF JUMP ON OPTION either in China Mongolia or Russia as of June 2016. You need to buy a ticket for each sector so that is two tickets at least. One to stop at Ulan Bataar (there ain't much there believe me) and a separate one to continue on.
