The Guinness world record for the longest miniature railroad is an amazing 2200 acre property in southern Oregon known as Train Mountain. I met up with Tom Watson for a tour of the railway, first from a golf cart, and later from his own gas-powered train. In a two-hour train ride, we only managed to travel on a portion of the layout!
I also got a look at G-Ville, the four acre section of Train Mountain dedicated to G-scale garden trains... and I'm seriously thinking about bringing some of my G scale model trains up to G-Ville to run on their layout.
If you'd like a ride on these model trains or visit the Train Mountain Railroad Museum, consult the Train Mountain web site at www.trainmountain.org/ for operating hours.
Families with small children will find the Klamath & Western Railroad, located right next door to train mountain, is more suitable for train rides for young kids. Operating hours can be found at www.knwrr.org/

Amazing video, Jim. I volunteer at a railway in Australia called the Diamond Valley Railway, which is a 7.25 inch track, which runs on a 2 kilometre track. We are open every Sunday and every Wednesday when there is school breaks.

I like and would love to visit Train Mountain Railroad in Klamath Falls, Oregon sometime in the future, to meet Tom Watson. And also see the Triennial, the gigantic train meet of all, which happens every three years! There is a pinecone on that switch up ahead and it will derail the train! OH NO! LOOK OUT! But it is too late. OH! Ooh, I hated when that happens! Thank goodness, Tom Watson has a solution to get the train back on to the tracks using a green rerailer. Just like the one that you, Jim Zim, use to get the G scale model trains on to the tracks with all sets of wheels of the locomotives and rolling stock, but the rerailer you use is orange. Klamath and Western Railroad is right next door to Train Mountain Railroad in Southern Oregon is best for kids. I also like and love G Vile that Train Mountain Railroad has. Maybe you, Jim Zim, should bring some of your G scale model trains to Train Mountain Railroad and run them on the layout sometime. As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!

I see the Southern Pacific General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives at Train Mountain in Oregon. Maybe sometime in 2023 after you get the G scale Conrail General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive from MTH Electric Trains, you, Jim Zim, will soon have to get a G scale Southern Pacific General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive equipped with DCC to add to your collection of G scale model trains, even though you are living in the Pacific Northwest. As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim! Have a good day!

I did miss this video when you posted it. I think your video is much better than the one I took. By the way, were you aware of the fire they had there this summer? Many acres of trees and ground cover were burnt. No serious damage appears to have been done and the 2-part video they posted shows much of the damage to the trees and ground cover, most of which will grow back in the coming years. Please let me know if you are going back down. I would love to meet you and your wife. It will take a little longer for me to get there since we live between Seattle and Tacoma. Thanks again for responding so quickly to my email and for sharing that beautiful video.

I heard about this place on the weekend of 26 & 27 January when I was attending the NW Model Hobby Expo. I was talking with the model train clubs present about the different scale trains available. I was trying to find a scale that our clubs RC trucking & construction equipment would fit well with. They told me about 1 1/2 inch scale train, & of train Mountain.

I went to trwin mountain and 2006 for the triennial, and it was a terrible experience. A lot of derailments because the track panels were just thrown down in place so they weren't straight and riddled with kinks. To make it worse, it was super hot there, and the dirt on the ground was super dusty that stuck to sweat. It was absolutely miserable

I don't know how long of a ride they give to a regular visitor... but I suspect it is quite a bit less than two hours. That's just my guess, though... and I could be wrong. I think Tom gave me a special V.I.P. tour because he knew I was shooting video that would end up creating great free publicity for Train Mountain. So, if you visit Train Mountain, don't go expecting a two hour ride! Maybe one will happen, I don't know, but if it does... just be glad! And yes, there were some porta-potties at various points around the layout and I'm sure they would stop if you needed them to! If Tom happens to be reading these comments, maybe he will chime in with information about what length of a ride a regular visitor to Train Mountain might expect.
@JimZim
@JimZim 3 жыл бұрын
I think they call this 7.5" gauge, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Once you get up in to these big sizes that you can actually ride on, there are lots of different versions that are all very similar... such as 7.25" gauge and 7.5" gauge. It's not really a size I'm very familiar with, so that's why I'm not 100% sure of the right way to describe it.
@connie1758
@connie1758 3 жыл бұрын
@@JimZim super late.......but an answer. Train mountain railroad is 7.5” gauge. As for scale the most common scale is 1.5” scale, meaning 1.5”=1’ which represents standard gauge equipment. There is also 2.5” scale for 3’ narrow gauge and 3.75” scale for 2’ gauge narrow gauge.

It's a huge layout. Incredibly huge! According to a post on their web site, they just suffered a little damage to the tracks on the north side of the property. That still leaves a gigantic portion of the layout untouched. They specifically mention on their web site that the central station area, which is the heart of Train Mountain, was not damaged by the fires.
