Niles Canyon in Fremont, California is home to one of the best holiday lights trains. Operated by the Niles Canyon Railway, this train takes passengers on a brightly illuminated night time ride through Niles Canyon between Niles and Sunol. Let's take a look at this train as it makes several runs through the canyon. All aboard!

For me it more sounded like Nathan P series but you might be right, it could be from M series, because P series always have a screech at the beginning of their horn.

Southern Pacific 2472 is still at Brightside on the Niles Canyon Railway. GGRM is still moving their containers and other parts out before the rail equipment is moved.

All the GGRM equipment is still at the NCRy, but they are planning on moving it not too long from now.

Steam locomotives are expensive and time consuming to operate and maintain, and the Train of Lights is PLA's big fundraiser. The focus of this event is the experience and comradery aboard the train itself, not the locomotives pulling the train; steam locomotives are not what most people come to see during this event, it's the lights and a fun holiday outing for the family. The average non-railfan does not know the difference between a steam and diesel locomotive and does not care (trust me, I've had to explain the difference more than once), so there would be no point having steam powering the train. On top of that, the operating steam locomotives receive maintenance and Federal inspections during the Winter months in preparation for the next season.

Sometimes, they do run the steam locomotives on the train for one or two of the days it runs, but they were not running them when I filmed this.

They operated steam on the train of lights for the first and only time (thus far) in November, 2015 and have not done it since. It was something of a surprise as TOL never operates with steam. Steam operations add a lot of complications to an already labor intensive event.
