Train Passes Through Crowded Neighborhood! Houses Face Tracks Like Main Street, USA, Kentucky Trains

These houses all face the CSX main line as if the tracks were Main Street. A huge freight train passes through the homes blowing its horn. This huge, fast train is in Augusta Kentucky on the old Chesapeake & Ohio Railway line from Cincinnati to Russel, Kentucky along the Ohio River. This long train needed 4 huge locomotives on the head end to pull over 9,000 feet of train with 600 axles. There are about 5 or 6 trains a day, including Amtrak on this route. There use to be a lot more trains but most of the coal trains are gone and today there are only 4 scheduled daily freights and Amtrak makes 3 round trips a week between Chicago and New York City. Extra freight trains such as grain and coal can show up at any time. CSX calls out the signals on 160.230 and there is a defect detector just west of Augusta. The shortest way for me to get here from my home is to use the ferry that crosses the Ohio River from Ohio into Kentucky. The ferry costs $5 one way and saves me 17 miles driving. I show part of the ferry boat ride and I show my horse playing in the pond at the end. Rosemary Clooney is from Augusta, Kentucky and I show her house also. She is an American singer and actress.

Keep this in mind - The tracks were there before the houses and people were. The residents CHOSE to reside right next to the tracks!

Frankly, I’d make the same choice! Noise doesn’t bother me. When I was in the Navy stationed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk our berthing compartment was directly below the flight deck. We were far forward near where the water brake was. My bunk was next to the track for the starboard bow catapult. When an aircraft was launched using either of the bow catapults the sound of that device hitting the brake was like that of a train wreck! It took some getting used to, to be sure, but it got to where I couldn’t sleep if it was too quiet!

@@dennisshoffner5201 That is a cool story. I was on a Navy minesweeper and I learned to sleep listening to the diesel generators humming 24/7. Had a hard time sleeping in port under shore power ... too quiet! To this day I have a fan on at night for white noise .. wife will not let me use the sound diesel generators to sleep by LOL. I remember the Kitty Hawk. IMO you could place my entire ship on one of your ship's elevators :) Nice to hear from a fellow Navy vet. Stay safe in these COVID times.

bill timmons Then you understand! Since the overhead in our berthing compartment, which was on the O-3 level, was the flight deck, there was noise from all that activity, too, in addition to all the normal sounds of a ship underway, like the ventilation systems and other machinery noises. When we were underway to the Philippines, December 1973, we had a bad fire in the number one main space. We had four. Each main space had two boilers turning one screw. So we had four propellers. An aircraft carrier has to be able to create enough wind to launch and recover aircraft. The fire killed eight. We went dead in the water. Scariest sound is no sound in a situation like that.

When I was young, my Mom moved us into a home that had a train track in the back yard, however, our tracks were never this close. But on our first night while we were sleeping, a train came through in the middle of the night blasting it's horn, nearly giving us all heart attacks. It literally sounded like it was coming through the house. Oddly, after a few nights, we got accustom to it.

This video and your last street running video make me homesick for when I was a kid in NJ. We used to hop on the last train car and ride it for fun, at least the crazy kids did. A lot of those lines disappeared in NJ and the ones left, get complaints from the neighborhood residents. Its a sign of the times I guess. I'm betting like many towns where I'm from in NJ those homes and the town were industrial centers and the RR was an important part in the early days so residents knew when a train (or even a truck) came thru to bring industrial raw materials or bring out finished products they worked on all week, it meant a paycheck and job security for them. That being said, they were not as bothered by it.

I grew up a block from where the five major railroads in this country intersected. They stored the engines about half a mile from my house. They never shut off the diesel engines! They make a great place to warm up in the winter after ice skating! Not to mention the flares, or the x rated library in the caboose! My friend's Dad taught him to drive the engines! On Sunday afternoon, (wintertime)we would go And he would drive the engine, a mile down the tracks. And then back it up a mile, with other traffic, you dont dare go too far! We would turn on the beam light and play around.... trains are majestic! But.... I would never, ever live that close! Things constantly fly and fall off of trains. It surprises me they ever got built that close, I would think there would be some city ordinances or something. Choo choo

To give it some leeway. My thoughts are, What if something goes wrong? OR if the train derails....... I was always TOLD people & objects are supposed to be 14 feet away from the tracks. The houses look closer than that. But hey, I'm not judging, But that is a little too close for my comfort. 😨😳 But nice video though! Thanks for sharing!

I'd think that the railroad running so close to homes would be a serious concern relative to small children. Thinking back to my own youth outside of Pittsburgh, the tracks would be a great fascination to most kids, an attractive nuisance. And a serious caution to their mothers. Elsewhere, nice ferry -- a civilized way to cross the river. And finally, your horse seemed to be deliberately stirring up the mud so he could roll in it. Equine pest mitigation?

Over 70 yrs ago when I was a child, we learned at an early age to have sense enough to stay out of the way of anything dangerous. Parents nowadays don't have the sense that God gave a big-eyed bird; namely, to trust the child and its inborn good sense.

I wonder how many people think that the town was there first and then the railroad came along and put the tracks in? I live near a town (Latrobe, Pa. ) where people complain about the steel mill, the steel mill was put 2 miles from the town 75 years ago and a spur was run to the steel mill. People working at the steel mill had houses built close to the mill so they could walk to work. Now the Johnny-come-lately’s want to know why that steel mill is where it’s at, LMAO.

Drummin'Man74 I certainly can’t answer your question about damage from vibration of the trains. I can tell you that some of the houses near the steel mill I mentioned, we purchased by individuals and they rented the homes out at reasonable rates because they were across the street from the steel mill. The owner of the house failed to tell the new occupants in the evening there was any enormous triphammer that was working at the mill and you could actually feel it in the ground when they were hammering the steel. The steel mills responsible for supplying high-grade steel for weaponry during all of the wars. Sometimes they work 24/7. That was only one steel mill there were two other ones in that town as well initially built well away from the town. Only two steel mills remain now. They both make very high grade material for aircraft and weaponry.

Zirndorf Redleg Rolling Rock was bought out a number of years ago and the production was moved to I think a Budweiser plant owned by Labatts. The plant that was originally Latrobe Brewing, Rolling Rock, is now owned by City Brewing, they are one of my customers. Surprisingly in the last six or eight months they have been busier now making more beer than they ever did even with Rolling Rock. There was a time decade upon decade ago, if you worked at the brewery you could get a beer by pulling the tap handle even while working. It was a long time ago.

If it's a mainline, these folks are used to it. If they weren't happy, they would leave. Their are many areas, where tracks pass close to homes and businesses. I've seen many of these. Most are busy main line tracks. People who live by them, are used to the noise, vibration and the danger.

I am 74 years of age and was raised in Cincinnat, Ohio. I remember as a small child my family would drive to Ashland each Memorial Day and decorate the grave site of family and friends of my grandmother. She was born and raised in Ashland, Kentucky and we would always stop to visit grave sites in Augusta just before arriving in Ashland. I never saw the city of Augusta because we would always drive our car on to the ferry boat and go across the Ohio River to Augusta and then drive a few miles up the road straight to the cemetery. At my great grandfather's home in Ashland I would always run to the back yard fence just to watch the freight trains go by. This was back in the early 50's. Those were the days that began my fasination with trains. This video brings to mind some good childhood memories. Thank You.
