Train Plowing Dirt and Grading Work - Rare Track work equipment along the Withrow Sub-

In order to keep the tracks and right of way in good order, railroads will sometimes use a Jordan Spreader to reprofile the ballast and dirt along the tracks. This plows, and pushes, the ballast to the sides so the tracks drain properly so the track stays in better shape longer. Seeing this type of operation is pretty rare!
We first see them working near 37th Ave NE in Minneapolis at the top of Shoreham Hill. This was the Soo Line's main back in the day, and was once double tracked. Pushing the Soo spreader is a Canadian Pacific SD30C-ECO. The spreader itself is powered by a Detroit Diesel, and has a distinct sound to it. After making a few passes, we'll head down the line to Johnson St NE. We'll get to see it up close, and make a few passes. Additionally, the drone will provide us with a birds eye view, and we can see its massive hydraulic arms extended as it passes. The sheer power it takes to dig into the ground, push, and profile the ROW is amazing... One REALLY cool result of this was seeing where ties of the second main used to be. It looks like they just tore out main track two....although that's been gone for over 30 years!

Dude I bought my house from is a retired rail worker, and down in the workshop he left behind a chunk of rail anvil and his old beefy s-shaped open end wrench. I cleaned it up with a brass wire wheel, and now it's displayed proudly on my "man cave" wall. It's a display piece... my tinkering would be an insult to such a seasoned piece of rail maintenance history.

I worked for Pandrol Jackson in 1999,which was bought out by Harsco Corp in 2000. The shop in Syracuse N.Y . was building a Plow /Ballast Spreader for the Alaskan Rail Road . The shop was using prints from one of the original plows they had built in the 40s . From what I remember I was told Pandrol Jackson use to be Jackson -Jordon at one time . I believe the Plow was one of the last projects that was done at the Syracuse shop , before they closed .

What's wild about Jordan Spreaders was that they were originally designed to do this, MOW work especially with ballest. It wasn't until Jim Jordan on the Espee who figured they would be really useful with snow in the Sierras and thus what we get today.

I just got done listening to the audiobook version of "Nothing Like it in the World," which is Stephen Ambrose's account of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. As I was watching this, I was marveling that everything required to build the Pacific Railroad (as they called it back then) had to be done by hand. You know, the grading, laying the ties and track, spiking them in and filling in the ballast. Also making all the cuts and fills, and building trestles. And the Central Pacific had to cut tunnels through the solid granite of the Sierras using hand drills and black powder (or nitroglycerin). It simply boggles the mind that they were able to accomplish the feat.

And as another one of your commenters said, it was originally designed as a dirt mover and trencher. That SD30C-ECO sure looks cool too. Not a unit I get to see here in Arizona.
