NS 201 at Elliston ran out of fuel 1/2 mile west of me with a single BNSF engine leading! This caused train to go into emergency. NS 65W came along on adjacent track to lend him one of his engines to continue westward!
How bizarre!! Who ever heard of such a situation? Great catch!👍

This one did but I suspect there was more than a fuel issue but could never find out. Thanks for your comment!

I like to catch trains that have to stop near the pipe lines being installed off rt.11. Close to the taco joint and the mini mart. Thats where i caught a NS loco towing a bunch of Egypt bound locos with Egyptian livery. Pretty cool.

I hope there were other routes for people to take in and out of the areas on either side of the tracks and not be “trapped” for 3 plus hours. Also hope that there weren’t any emergencies that occurred that responders couldn’t access.

wrong there is a fuel gage on the tank there is none in the cab there was a N&W train that left Peru in, the crew told the rail road the fuel was very low, ther crew was told to shut up the Computer said the locomotives were filled up in Decatur Il, now a diesel locomotive can hold up tp 4000 gal or more and will get at least 1000 miles out of 4000 gal. the crew change crews at Fort Wayne in, the new crew told the rail road thy were low on fuel , the crew was told the same thing thy Computer waid they had a lot of fuel, the train went on and the train ran out of fuel at Butler In on the con rail Diamond. Conrail at that time ran 100 trains a day. the crew told the N&W rr they were out of fuel and the train was on the don rail diamond, the N&W rail road said that was Impossible because the Said the Locomotives were filled up at Decatur Il. the Crew said tell that to the Computer and here are some boss from Conrail that want to talk to you, A small diesel fuel truck had to be called to put enough fuel to get to detroit mi, as for the Ns train that ran out of fuel on you tube there bosses were most likely ex N&W, the N&W rail road was Know for Having Mean and nasty Management. most like the crew told their boss they were low on fuel

John Fishwick gave the unions a good spanking many people went over 90 days with out pay, the N&W was very mean and nasty to its workers, in the 1980's was not a good time to work for the n&w SIDE OF NORFORk southern

I dont understand why there is only 1 engine to begin with. I thought engines were paired up facing opposite ways so this way no matter which end it hooks up to the consist there would be a engine facing the direction of travel. Im starting to wonder if an engine had to be set out due to a safety issue and this is why fuel levels were overlooked
@dknowles604 ай бұрын
@made-in-the80s wrong i can point out in one case where a N&W train ran out of Fuel in Butler In, to be fail the Management was told by the Engineer and other Crew the Locomotives Were Low on fuel at the Peru in crew change point, the boss told the crew that the Computer said the locomotives were filled up at Decatur Il. when the Train ran out of Fuel at Butler in the Crew said on the radio tell the Computer we are out of fuel
@LegendaryRadioJock Жыл бұрын
Sorry but that is a controlled stop, not an emergency stop. As for how it ran out of fuel? My guess would be a leak.
@NSCSXRailfan Жыл бұрын
It actually did run out of fuel. That’s what I heard the Engineer and Conductor say. There was no leak. That actually happened to another train locally in the same week, and they did report going into emergency to Dispatch. Never heard if there was a leak or not but another train ran out of water at my location too and had the Fire Department fill it up. I have video of that as well. Thanks!!!
@davidbehrend70548 ай бұрын
I am no expert by any means, but while it was a “controlled” stop as it no longer had fuel, they probably declared an it an “emergency” so that the dispatcher could warn any following trains on the same main to stop well behind. Then they would have to worry about getting a “rescue” engine(s) to pull the disabled train to a place where fuel could be provided, running any trains scheduled on that main around the disabled train if necessary, holding any other trains to be able to do any runarounds, etc…. I’m guessing “emergency” is basically an unscheduled stop.

Someone needs to be facing consciences. Now if the engineer expressed that he didn't think he/she had enough fuel for the trip but was told to go on anyway then he should be in the clear but if he/she didn't check the fuel level then I agree send him/her down the road. His/her pay should also be docked for the time it took to get going again.
