In this next route learning video, we take a Regional Railways Class 150 on a journey from Norwich to Lowestoft. Set in the early 1990s, this journey takes us along one of the three routes of the new Wherry Lines add on from Armstrong Powerhouse. Along the way we will be calling at Brundall, Cantley, Reedham, Haddiscoe, Somerleyton, Oulton Broad and Lowestoft.
You can purchase this route from Armstrong Powerhouse here:

Another great video Pete! Had a holiday on the Norfolk Broads in the 80s and had to collect the boat from Brundall. Nice to see the station hasn't really changed! Looking forward to seeing the route via Berney Arms... We moored our boat there and walked for miles to find the station (a wooden platform!) to catch the train in to Great Yarmouth! Had to wave to get train to stop and tell the guard on way back!

Nice video, thanks. The more I see of this route the more I want to buy it. The sheer amount of different stock (03, 08, 20 , 25, 31, 37, 40, 47, 101, 105) you could run on it without them looking too out of place is one of the things that attracts me to it. Thanks again.

The incline approach to Reedham Swing Bridge starts just after the bridge, where at one time there was a planned triangle to Great Yarmouth. Although the ground works were dug out, whether track was ever laid there is moot. If memory serves from my signalling days on this line, after getting up to speed from Somerleyton (LAYton not LEAton) you can turn off the power and coast all the way to Oulton Broad North. Leaving it on power 4 would not only waste fuel, you'd almost certainly not keep to within the speed limit.

Fun Fact: Trains only stop at Buckenham on Weekends. Saturdays have 1 trains to Norwich and 2 to Lowestoft. Sunday has 3 to Norwich and 3 to Great Yarmouth. 5 trains during the summer in each direction. So like Tees Side Airport station it gets sod all.

Another brilliant video, Peter, both in clarity of images and your commentary. I will be very interested to see your videos on the new route out of Paddington, my local line for more than 30 years. There have only been two types of DMUs in that time: the green ones lasted until Thames Trains gained the franchise on privatisation in the early 1990s and brought in the 165s and 166s. The Sprinters and their developments passed us by.Many thanks, Roger Crick

A distant signal can only be pulled off when all home and starting signals (including the advanced starter -section signal) are cleared through the station / block post ahead. Therefore this is why a terminus only ever has a fixed distant - however many home signals might be at green, ultimately you always reach the stop blocks which are in themselves the ultimate red signal. It drives me NUTS when you drive a train sim route and get a cleared distant approaching a terminus, as this implies the route is clear through the booking office and into the car park / high street beyond!

Loved the video, the jointed track sounds are great. So soothing! 😊 Two little things: Somerleyton is pronounced Summer-lay-ton. Second you were a wee bit rough with the controls. When notching up the power from a stand using to high a power setting at low speeds can cause wheelslip and unnecessary wear on the transmission. With British Rail Second Generation DMUs the transmission won't actually develop full power until about 20mph is reached. There are two notching techniques for 7-notch power controller units that I am aware of. The first is: Brakes to Step one, power to notch 3, release brakes, into notch 4 once moving, notch 5 at 5mph, 6 at 10mph and into full power at 15mph. That appears to be the technique used by ATW drivers. ScotRail drivers use a somewhat different technique: Brakes to Step one, power to notch 3, release brakes, up to notch 5 at 5 mph and straight to full power at 15mph. Your braking was spot on though. Some drivers can be a bit rough on the stopping, your braking was pretty damn smooth! Look forward to your Cardiff to Paddington video. Ben😊

@PTGRail 8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Reid Thanks! I think this route is great to both look at and listen to. I didn't realise that about the pronunciation of Somerleyton as I so often don't in areas I'm not familiar with in reality. I've never been quite sure when to step up to full power with the throttle so thanks for the information. Braking is always the challenging part when it comes to driving a train I feel, so I'm glad you liked my braking technique :)

Great video, really showed off this awesome route too. Regarding taking power, I've been told often that for the best pickup out of a station, you should do either notch 3>until moving>5>up to 10mph>7 after 10mph, or 4/5 up to 10mph > 7 after mph. Certainly the second option is the most used now, however I believe in the BR days the drivers were trained with the first procedure. Hope this might come in useful, as I noticed that you went to notch 7 fairly quickly when setting off, which caused unnecessary wear and tear on transmission parts.

Enjoyed this a lot as I grew up in Lowestoft, took the train to Norwich on many occasions. I just bought train simulator and this add on is going to be on my shopping list. One minor point that has already been commented on, Somerleyton is pronounced as Summer Late On, not Summerly Ton

Great run through of this line. A distant signal under semaphore signalling when in the Off Position tells the driver that All Signals are Off in the section that that Signalbox controls. The distant has to remain at Caution because you are running into a terminus and the Red lights at the end of the line is a fixed signal and can never be Off. Looking forward to you driving the other routes on the Wherry Line and if you stop at Berney Arms which only has two trains a day. www.urbanghostsmedia.com/2015/10/british-ghost-trains-empty-services-forgotten-stations/

Really helpful and inspiring videos. Do you have any tips for route learning in TS2016, i'd love to drive without using the HUD. Do you draw maps, take notes and use particular landmarks as reference points?
@PTGRail
@PTGRail 8 жыл бұрын
+ZetanCrisp Thank you! I first drive the route with the HUD on and make notes. I look out for landmarks, speed limit warnings, and try to learn distances between various points. Anything can be a landmark, including crossings, bridges, buildings, gradient changes, curves, whistle boards.. basically anything that can indicate your distance to the next stop or speed change. Then you just need to know the handling characteristics of that particular train so you know how much distance you need to slow down or stop. Driving without the HUD in TS is a whole new experience. It really adds to the realism, and for me transforms it from a train driving game to an actual simulator.
@ZetanCrisp
@ZetanCrisp 8 жыл бұрын
+PTGRail Many thanks for your reply. I tried a run from Peterborough to Kings X yesterday and only turned the HUD on now and again to check things like signal distances when there were adverse signals, and noticed how much more of the route I was noticing and learning compared to just looking at the HUD most of the time, it tends to break the flow? It actually feels like you are more immersed in the route without the HUD.

If you are looking for many trains then something like the Weardale & Teesdale Network should be good for you. It is however set in the 1950s. Modern routes with a good amount of value would in my opinion be the MML London - Bedford (buy the twin pack to get a 377 for just a pound more) or the ECML London - Peterborough.
