The first steam locomotive in the world to break the 100mph barrier, at just over 112mph - was the NYC & HRR no.999 of the "Empire State Express" which traveled from NYC to Buffalo NY.
Now available for Train Simulator from developers 'Machine Rail' is the famed locomotive as well as a complete set of period coaches and rolling stock for the ESE.

Thanks for showing my workshop route! For those wondering, this is the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Mainline, which is available on the Steam Workshop! I think you'd be able to get to 100mph west of Paterson, it's straight and flat, you were pushing up a slight grade east of Paterson which was holding you back.

@@danielohearn7544 thank you! It runs from Hoboken to Denville NJ. About 30 miles. Working on an extension to Dover right now though progress in route building is always slow going.

23:10 Regarding the whistle, for the period in 999's career that this model is depicting it's decently accurate. Single chimes (Whistles that only play a single note) like that were very common back then. If it was me, based on how short the whistle is i'd say it would probably have been higher pitched, but at that point i'm getting a bit nit-picky.

The first real “varnish” in Train Sim! Looks fantastic, I’ve always been fascinated by how fast these things could go. Probably give the modern Lake Shore a run for its money!

You are very dependable for the quick-and-straightforward videos on these releases, there is clearly a very meticulous amount of effort put into the construction of these Machine Rail addons. Do not play DTG Train Sim myself but these are very enjoyable to watch nonetheless

To American trains experts/fans: - what kind of valve gear do the classic American 4-4-0s use? It doesn't look anything like what you'd commonly find on an European train with external cyliners at this stage of steam trains development. - What's the function of the huge cab? Looking from the outside, it looks like comfortable space for the crew. (well, as comfotrtable as the footplate can be :P). Then you check inside and find that like the front 2/3 of it is occupied by the firebox and largely unwalkable.

The most common valve gear in that time period was inside Stephenson with slide valves, which is what 999 is equipped with. The large cab is filled with the majority of the firebox because of the 86" drive wheels. The firebox has to ride in between the rear drive axle because the wheels are large. That limits the available grate area so you fill up the cab space with firebox. Trailing trucks on 4-4-2's and 4-6-2's have massive steaming advantages over 4-4-0's and 4-6-0's becuase they had small rear axles to support much larger fireboxes. If you search for Camelback locomotives, they are an early solution to that issue by moving the cab on top center of the boiler to allow for more space at the rear for a wider and taller firebox on locomotives without trailing trucks. American locomotives in the anthracite coal region in Pennsylvania required really wide Wooten-type fireboxes to burn that coal, and several anthracite railroads adopted Camelbacks for a period at the turn of the century.

Do any of the train sims offer a 30s/40s environment as well as the relevant locos? For me personally, theres a big disconnect in running an old loco in modern surroundings.

The real top speed this engine reached was 84-86mph. (Still insane for a 4-4-0) The 116mph claim was from two journalists who didn’t calculate the locomotive’s headlong speed properly.

999 was built for high speed and was the first steam locomotive in the world to travel over 100 mph. It was officially clocked by railroad officials when it ran a world record of 112.5 mph on May 10, 1893.
