For context on the American whistle, yes it is a chime. A three chime to be precise (the number of “steps” on the whistle cap help to identify the type of chime whistle it is, for example if it has 5 of them, it’s a 5 chime)

You know, as I seriously do personally just suddenly recently recall from watching an episode from the show's own official complete full CGI animation era titled Toby's New Whistle where Toby the Tram Engine himself happened to actually have a 3-chime steam whistle WHILE his own official little bell was bein' cleaned @ the Sodor Steamworks! In fact, if memory serves me correctly from awhile back ( watching the show's own official complete full CGI animation era's complete seasons 13-16 respectfully) now when Michael Brandon himself was the narrator in the show's own official U S narration, James the Red Engine himself said that he used to actually have a 3-chime steam whistle!

I understand why you say about the American look. As an American myself, it’s just what had to be done to meet North American safety regulations. The same thing also had to happen for any European locomotive that has ever visited North America. Safety is number 1 priority afterall, even if the Class 1’s were being complete idiots for the past few years
