It not being an American movie really does add to the survival aspect of the situation. Like you said, most Western zombie flicks have the survivors using guns which lower the threshold of the survival part. So whenever bad stuff happens and they need someone to do the usual "survivor doing stupid shit" trope, the "stupid" part tend to be ham up too much. Here, since no one have gun, even the smallest mistake will get them killed and that make the story feel more organic.

Honestly, her wanting to go to Busan saved her life. lol. if they stayed in Seoul she definitely would have turned. Busan, while a populous city, has a lot of natural defenses. It's surrounded by ocean and mountains, so that being their destination was what gave me more hope that if they made it there, that they would be okay. Love this movie

Honestly that makes a lot of sense. Zombies have to be quick and agile to reach the sheer level of threat needed to overrun the early military response, so putting a breakdancer choreographer definitely helped in that aspect.

The sister giving up and not fighting to make it to the next rail car for safety always gets me. She's the one who was clearly kind and considerate seeing the better part of people for who they were. To see her observe what has become of the survivors and how selfish they behave and decide she didn't want to live anymore because of it, just pow.
@Kamenari37
@Kamenari37 10 ай бұрын
@@roronoauchiha69 The two sisters serve as a couple of mirrors to Korean society. One is of the old mindset, the other of the new. The older sister chastised the younger one for her way of thinking but when she saw her sister give up on trying to be saved it certainly seemed to give her some clarity on things. She likely acted the way she did to protect her sister more than anything and may well have been a truly good person at her core.
@laurajanco2i
@laurajanco2i 10 ай бұрын
@@Kamenari37 yeah, she probably took the role of the protective sister for a long time and was also probably hardened by life, trying to make her sister understand that she was too kind for this world.
@Kamenari37
@Kamenari37 10 ай бұрын
@@laurajanco2i There is a lot of subtext in regard to Korean culture within the film that a western audience won't pick up on. The overly career focused father neglecting family is one social commentary, as is the culture of prioritizing money over people. The girl sneaking onto the train without anyone noticing, and also being somewhat indifferent while she outright attacks a conductor is a reflection of how people in Korea tend to self prioritize and not get involved with other people and their issues. The homeless guy is also a part of that as well as being commentary on how less fortunate people are viewed in Korean society. In the meta view of the film, the two sisters are a reflection of the old Korea versus the new. The kinder friendlier sister representing the new world outlook with the shrewder sister representing the more conservative past. Their fates could be a warning of sorts. In that without compassion and kindness, even if someone were to survive an apocalypse, just how much value would life have to be worth living? You need both, as well as a strong resolve to make it in any world, so you cannot let kindness die.

Also from what I understand , and correct me if I'm wrong , South Korea , has a pretty large homeless population, that has its own sort of political history and issues that go along with it. However I love the homeless man in the movie, he's a selfless and kind man, who sacrifices himself near the end so that the father daughter and pregnant woman can escape the zombies that are about to break through the glass. He is unassuming and comes off as crazy at first, however upon a second viewing it's very evident that he was just traumatized by what he's seen. It's very possible that his camp/where he lived was on the train platform where the infection started.

1:48 It's weird, I've never hit a deer, but I've been hit by a deer twice! The first time I tried to avoid it by driving on the wrong side of the road. It hit my passenger door, left a a small dent and a tuft of fur between the door and front fender panel. The next time I was driving home at night and saw a buck charging toward the road, antlers down, and wound up hitting my car. Miraculously, there wasn't any paint chipped but there are two small dents where the antlers hit my car
@cctomcat321

Yeah... I just pull over completely and whistle. They stare for a few seconds and usually take off. Beats the alternative. You know when people live in deer country because they're always looking for reflective eyes in the ditch. At least that's what I was taught. I also have the perspective we're encroaching more on the animals than they are us, so I'm going to swerve for a squirrel. I don't mind chilling for a deer. It absolutely angers me when I'd drive home and see 5-7 raccoons in a small stretch like people were purposely swerving to get them. I'm sure you know what I mean if you've been tagged. To add to the deer thing, I knew someone who broke their ankle kicking one off on a motorcycle. Landed the bike in a ditch and was stuck for a few hours because nobody could see him until he crawled up back to the road. We also had to go get my cousins car after hers was totalled by one. They always hit the wildest spots when they full on get hit. Front, side... Nothing is safe. Step dad totalled a Camry, I think? Cracked the shield and set off front and side bags. There was fur in the front and in the passenger door. There were like 4-5 contact points.
@kiwiparfaits
@kiwiparfaits 10 ай бұрын
maybe a weird response haha but if you have another run-in with deer, its best not to try to swerve and dodge them. you could hit other cars or a tree, both objects that will cause FAR more damage to you (likely kill you) than hitting a deer

So there’s an animated prequel called “Seoul Station” and that was amazing, and then the sequel “Peninsula” wasn’t the greatest but it had some great action so i’d still say give it a watch even if it’s on your own time. Speaking of political themes in Korean movies, a lot have to do with the class differences that the Korean society goes through, have a couple friends out there and if you think the difference in the rich vs the poor in America is bad WOOF is it something else out there, Parasite is a great example of the class difference explanation in Korean films

Best zombie movie ever made. 🥰 That place with the wrecked train wasn't actually Busan (which I think you may have figured out by the time the train actually stopped?). As the conductor said he was going to have to find another train in order to get them to Busan. The conductor also said that if he found a working train, he would pull it onto the left track. He wasn't leaving them behind. he was doing what he said and hoping others would follow.

*Mild Spoilers for sequel of train to Busan* I really didn't like the sequel. It wasn't like it was a terrible movie I still had a kind of fun time. It was more guns and action that American movies have with some Americans in it(because If there is a zombie apocalypse that happens somewhere in the world basically the whole world is gonna find out eventually). Also no returning characters. which IMO kinda sucks because there is a lot of possibility with the remaining characters if they were older + some new characters and at least continuing the story in that way. There are some characters in the current movie we have that if done right could easily be changed to the child and the lady and the baby + new or the same characters as currently. But I've never heard of Kingdom so I will check that out!

10:18 if it's the same in my city, it's not that surprising that that man did not stop the woman from getting on the train. they're not really security personnel who are meant to stop suspicious-looking people from getting on, instead they're meant to help passengers get on and check to make sure that the train is safe to leave. when he saw the woman running towards him, he must've just thought it was a passenger who got some wounds tripping while rushing to catch the train and just let her on expecting the train attendants to take care of her during the ride.

"Train to Busan" delves into themes of classism, mob mentality, and the triumph of compassion over self-serving ego. The core group in the story is comprised of individuals who actively contribute to the well-being of the collective, in contrast to the self-centered COO businessman. Su-an represents innocence, Seok-woo transforms from an absentee father to a caregiver, Sang-hwa, a soon-to-be father, emerges as an inspiring team leader. Seong-keong, the pregnant wife, shields the group from zombies and assumes a leadership role among the tail group. Kevin (from "Parasite") embraces his girlfriend's affection and fights to reunite with her. Jin-hee, his girlfriend, offers hope for survival. The sacrifices of the elderly sisters temporarily safeguard the central leading group. Lastly, the homeless man proves to be an asset. He warns others about the undead, rescues the protagonist, and, as an unsung hero, sacrifices his life to save a pregnant woman and a child.

That jerkoff dude is sadly how most people would probably be. Out to save their own skin which ironically sealed his fate in the end. Pennisula is cool. Not nearly as good I would say but worth the watch.

Seeing how you guys enjoyed this, i think you would love All of Us are Dead. It is a korean drama revolving around a zombie apocalypse as well, but this time the characters are high school teens. An absolutely awesome show, and they've also just announced season 2

Yeap the ktx specifically is what we would call a bullet train, and does go about 300km. They're in the same category, but not the same, as the shinkansen.

I like the movies that are more realistic in a turn... People don't get full zombie makeup 5 seconds after a bite. If I really had to be pressed... I prefer our comedies over our "horror" when it comes to zombies. But this movie was awesome. 28 Days Later level of awesome acting from the zed crew.

@@gabrielkawa3477 I meant they did a really good job in this. Sorry... that's my b. I can see how that wasn't clear. I meant movies like this vs one where someone gets bit, looks away, looks back, and has turned full on zombie, decay and all. This movie was great. It's probably the best straight up Zombie movie imo.

I just looked it up and it sounds like it's the movie peninsula and the synopsis says it was made 4 years after the events in train to Busan.

I literally cryed while watching you guys react to it, thats how deep I ahve this movie in my heart, to me, this is the BEST zombie movie, hands down. Peninsula is more action packed, mor of a thriller in the sense of "welp, the apocalypse happened, what know?" in a different place, with a different cast. Korea has a TON of great movies to check out like this (I mean, Oldboy STILL breaks me and elevates me unwillingly, so yes, yes yes, yes, yes. Also I love the actor who played the asshole in the movie, he speaks of it with such a genuine smile like "I'm glad you hate him because I do to", a treasure.

One of the things i love about this film, is the improv of the weapons, since only 2 percent of the population has weapons like guns,if I remember correctly, please correctly if I'm wrong.😊

This movie is a MASTERPIECE. I don't know what else to say besides that. As for sequels and such - Peninsula isn't worth it. It's set after Train to Busan and isn't the best, especially compared to Train to Busan. The prequel Seoul Station is worth it, as is All Of Us Are Dead. Definitely check out more Korean movies, especially horror ones! Gonijam is another famous one!

if I'm not mistaken (I read somewhere), I think the director's original idea was for the old m$#cker to be the only survivor. (in fact, very smart commentary about society, how the most ruthless always get their way etc) but producers or test audience were SO mad about it that director had to change the end. Imagine that - I know I would have screamed at the movie if the director had decided to go in that direction...
