I love the 'fake release' step! Question: Would one ideally add increasing levels of distraction to this? Because if a cat, squirrel, dog or whatever is outside the dog may find that more attractive than my treat.

I have a red heeler cattle dog and when I tell him to come or two he'll he runs so fast and he is gone LOL I'm going to try this! And I'm not going to forget about the metal part and faking taking off the lease. This is so fun

Nice one, Joel. Is there a training method for basically whenever we are anywhere outside, the dog is not far away and basically goes where I go? Recall is okay, but should we really have to use it at all? If the dog is always by our side, then recall is only needed if we have given them the break commend?

Great video! I have a 100 lb teenage maniac German shepherd … I’m gonna try this and pray that she doesn’t up dragging me when she hits the end of the leash .. I hope not though.. I can’t wait till she listens like your golden did

I have a miniature poodle who is nearly 11 months and she loves to grab something she knows she is not allowed to have, and then run on circles around me, having the best time of her life. I try not to laugh at first and then get increasingly frustrated that she won't come to me, or go inside. I will try on leash until she listens.

I have 2 dogs and need to know how and if to train them apart or together as they are always together. They are partners in crime for sure. How often should you train them / day? And what’s a inexpensive treat option?

Josie is a natural. Our Yorkie is so, not! We just moved to the countryside; it's all open land, no fences. Our dog wants to just take off and run; the deer are calling her name! Unfortunately, she's really craving a good run but we can't allow her that and she's not able to burn off her energy like when we had an enclosed yard. Dog parks are out of the question, as she becomes anxious in them. The long leash method sounds like a good start. Any other suggestion for a very instinct-prey driven Yorkie? Thanks for your video!

What about using a flirt pole? High intensity without needing a wide open space. My min pin loved it.

Can a dog be taught to simply not leave the house at all? Where I live, the owner leaves the door open quite often, going in and out, and her dog is free to do the same. The yard isn’t fenced and, of course, I’m not always there to supervise and give a recall command (and when my dog does get out and run, she just yells, “hey! HEY! HEEEEYYYYYYYY!”, which does nothing). I can’t picture my dog thinking it’s not free to go if the other dog actually is. Is there a separate solution or do I just need to move out?

Perhaps you can put one of those spring hinges on the door that would close it behind her when she forgets to.

^ This. Josey is doing so well, there's practically no problem to solve here. My dog is running away when he gets into an "I don't hear you" kind of mindset and nothing I can do will stop him from dashing into the trees or other places where he can actually get out of sight.

@@Csoery same, but only when they are together. Alone the dogs have perfect recall. The only thing he won't do is soak on command, but does everything else she can do. She gives me the look, then him, then he looks at me with regret and follows her. Every time.

I do think this method would work it would be amazing to see you do this on a more challenging subject and perhaps over a time period of days and weeks to see the gradual improvement. We are thinking of adopting a dog that is a runner. A year and a half old. He only has sit under his belt so basically has been shuffled from one foster home to the next with well meaning folks that don't have time to train. I don't know if I have the nerve to handle constantly worrying about him running off.... great temperment sweet, good with kids, dogs, friendly. Our bylaws only allow us to have a 4 ft fence on the one side of our property which I think he could easily get over.....torn😦

@Beckman's Dog Training how did it go? I have two husky/lab mixes that do every trick, are great when alone, but as soon as they are out together they bolt. Fine around our animals, but have killed chickens that belong to others that I've had to replace. They were abused for the first year of their life, and ran together every chance they got. I hate that they can't be out on our farm together, and that when they get the opportunity to be they run, for hours. They respect me, but not my wife and children, and I can't be there all day every day. I've lost time and a bunch of money, it's tough.

Hi. Great videos. Im one of the new fan as I just got puppie. Can you help me as my puppy once we leave house im not existing for dog . Dog ignoring me not reacting for call completely nothing. But when we at home/garden puppy is like well trained dog. Where is the problem.

If I may: watch the videos on this channel about "loose leash walking." That's how Joel Beckman attacks your problem. It is basic to your dog paying more attention to you than to anything else, which is what you need when out walking together among all the distractions in the world.

Will have to try this with my Border Aussie... she runs all over the back yard, refuses to come when called, and runs away when I try to get her... she's far to fast to catch and I haven't found a single treat that she enjoys more than sprinting around the yard.

What happens when running away is more important to the dog then the treat. My dog takes off like a race horse out of the gate.

The problem we are having is when they are out together. Otherwise they never run away. As soon as they are out together they bolt for hours at a time.

My teckel knows when he has his leash on, he either picks it up or provabaly doesn't run out with his leash on.

My dog is just so crazy... If we open the door , he just run off sooooo fast..... We have to take the car to get him 2 streets away.. He always run to the same place... An other dog live there! He is now 10 months old and don't listen anymore :( Hopefully castration will calm him down. I will try this with a 30 feet leach !

On the contrary… he wasn’t expecting the dog to obey immediately like she did… he even said the dog had only been there a day or 2. And then he even indicated an element of surprise that she obeyed right away. So the fact that she’d only been there a day or 2 just reinforces the effectiveness of the methods in a short amount of time

@@kathleena4038 I've got yellow lab husky mixes, look just like the lab ancestor. Run every time, but only when together. The female always initiates, he always looks back at me with regret and then runs. Won't do it when the other is in the house or the kennel, which is never guaranteed thanks to my children and wife.
