Love your approach to training.. we are right now in the last few days and hopefully another week before our service dog (medical alert) Jake can finally stop his fight against cancer and move across that rainbow 🌈bridge to 4legged heavy which is one of the toughest things for us to witness and wrap our heads around. . I have never loved nor been so dependent on a animal in my life, he’s my battle buddy, the most popular family member and just a pure genuine soul that is so hard to find. He’s been my grounding force for nine years. I am a combat vet and a 20 year inner-city fire fighter. The void that Jake will leave well eventually have to be filled. Now with all that sappy, long winded stuff said. It’s been a long time since, vetting a dog for service work, training, working and preparing a potential service dog for the journey ahead. K9 for patriots has a program but that’s just a once a month meeting with a vetted dog that they supply which is a rescue. However Jake was vetted by myself and another individual and easily pass the temperament test from the beginning. I prefer to be an active part of picking our candidate. I love your videos your approach and your attitude on your training techniques I will definitely be following to brush up and prepare for the adventure ahead of our next potential “Jake” Which I can’t believe I already have to consider this while he lays here at my feet.

I’ve been researching service dog training for almost a year now and I finally started the process of getting a goldendoodle puppy. I’m supposed to bring them home September 25 and I’m so excited and nervous. I don’t have dog training experience and the whole process has been terrifying but your videos help me stop spiraling and remember it can be fun to train a dog as well and I can take it one step at a time.

I just got a 4 month Lanseer Newfie boy. Within 1 week he now knows, touch,sit,down, wait. He is doing awesome job to commands "Watch me", "STAY with me". He is learning the heel. Due to his size wait is a valuable command in my home. DO NOT BOLT thru doors,etc.He is very smart, loves learning new things.

I was recently asked if I could help someone with choosing and training their new service dog (probably more of an ESA, to be honest) so it's great to see that so much of what you do is what I've always done with ANY of my own puppies in the early weeks. Thank you so much for having these videos!! I watch a lot of non trainers and they make so many sweeping statements that don’t always apply. I have 1 service dog for brain damage causing involuntary muscle movements. He can alert me and petting him is my “trick” to redirect the neurons. (Yes this is memorized. My 2 service dog is for crippling PTSD from DV. They are small >12lbs. My PTSD sits in a pouch in front of my chest for compression and alert freezes. In public buildings or public transportation she is always in the pouch. She has greater roaming outside. I have had multiple issues with the “four on the floor” thinking. I bring a dog stroller for my 1st Service Dog in hot, cold, rain, and snow. There are no booties to fit him and as small dog prone to have issues with weather. I also live in DC where if I go into places I wouldn’t be a good Service Dog companion. People aren’t aware of where they’re going. People don’t see him on the floor. There is a risk that he may be kicked or stepped on. The KZfaq influencer’s are usually talking about larger breeds but people tend to listen to them and has caused issues with access with a dog stroller. This topic has been covered before and legally for those reasons I can have a dog stroller. I do have a question. Last year Bond and I, and a newly adopted small dog were viciously attacked by a Rotti. The other dog was killed and bled out in my arms. Bond and I had bites and other issues. It took Bond months to get over his PTSD of other dogs. Now that I have another one, dogs still go after him, he gets PTSD to protect her. Not if she’s safe in the pouch. I don’t yell or constantly say no, not always, I usually bend down and reassure him it’s “okay”. I’m not going to scream at a dog reacting from trauma. Can you let me know how to help him. The other problem I have that when walking him I can see the aggressive posture the other dog is showing. The owners are usually oblivious or on their phone. When I ask them to pull back on their dogs leashes the owners go on the offense. Do you have any recommendations. As they are small dogs, I have Service Dog vests and on the collar wrapped handkerchiefs stating their service dogs. I can’t stop people from petting them. I can’t stop children from poking or petting them. Either people don’t look. See the best too late. Some just don’t care. Any suggestions. Since they are small dogs I got from the kennel I am constantly bombarded with dealing with people barring public access who don’t believe me or I have the constant eye roll. What is your opinion on a federal registry. I’m for it. I also live gooby for small and medium dogs for harnesses and clothing. The are step in and the clothing zips up in the back. I do recommend their surf leashes. The handle goes around the wrist and tightens with Velcro. I don’t have to worry about dropping the handle. The leash is strong polyester and does well in all weather. However, the Velcro wrist strap ruins sweaters and some other fabrics to be careful with. I love your channel. My philosophy is very similar to yours and it’s so refreshing. As much they are medical devices they’re also dogs and deserve the right to also be respected for being a dog.

I’ve gotten a new puppy and retired my 10 year old. I trained him exactly the way you did in this video, except without the wonderful knowledge you share on the grooming in the bath as well as the dremmal. I will apply them with the puppy. Thanks!

Such a great video! I’d love to see some content around being a single dog parent, i.e. for those of us that live alone and want to adopt a rescue, or adopt a puppy from a breeder. Living alone and having the dog gives me some anxiety. I work from home too, but it’s scary to think of!

Im getting some tips now for training I can’t currently have a SD as I’m not in a position to house and train one. I have a retired SD who is 16 and requires an immense amount of care and attention in her old age and being diapered almost 24/7 I’m in a position where I’m able to handle myself without having a SD doing tasks but I’m also very isolated partly because of that so getting some advise now for this is very helpful for my future psychiatric SD. There’s tips and tricks in here I hadn’t thought to include that I’ll be sure to. Some repeat advise which is always a great reminder so I appreciate this video

I can't say enough from personal experience how important it is to socialize your puppy... We bought a g s d puppy from a reputable breeder from a champion blook line. We went there to buy her sister.However last minute my wife talked me in to getting the runt of the litter that they kept indoors and in their daughter's bedroom... The puppy was rarely ever around other puppies or dogs and was kept indoors at birth for 8 weeks. We purchased her. She was somewhat timid But didn't know how to handle us or being in the sun.. She was nipping more than any other puppy.I've ever had and any contact with the Sun.She did now, 2 years old and even with trying to socialize her.She is fearful of everything... We have broke some bad habits.She's a great dog very smart.But it's very controlled by fear and very distracted with any noise or surroundings.

Ive been training my dog for my own anxiety with no experience just knowledge of packs and watching you has shown me that ive been doing all the right things with him ... Wow im a natural... One thing i need to add to my routine is the feeding at all moments thats a good technique .. do you use treats all the time is that dog food that u just feed in bits?

In my state, it is illegal to have a service animal in a shopping cart. A good alternative is one of those foldable wagons!

Thanks heaps for this wonderful information. I am researching the Australian Cobberdog with the view to get and possibly train a puppy in the next year or so. I am just starting to sometimes need to use a walking stick or wheelchair shopping etc as I have mobility issues with back, neck, knees and ankle so will need the dog to fetch things, push pedestrian/lift buttons and possibly help me get up if I fall over. I am 154.5 cm and wondered what size dog I should look at? Cheers from Australia.

Thank you for this! I had been feeling like a burden to my family for not being able to function in public for months now.. I cant even make a doctor's appointment without breaking down.... as I learned there is such thing as service dogs for autism I was so freaking happy i started crying because- despite being a 19 year old woman.. i shut down completely in public without someone who I trust with me. I feel like a SD will help me and my life improve a lot. Ofc.. that will be a few years from now. I shall train my cats first to get train myself how to get use to things like this, then get pet insurance, and when I feel I'm ready get a SD and give them the best life as they make the best life of mine. I love this, very helpful, thank you! I had a pup thay was an agility dog and very in tune with me from the begin with. He was never a service dog, and never a cuddling type, but having chronic migraines and seizures, he would get very up close and velcro attentive, nudging me if I had seizures. He has since passed and just today I have adopted a two month old boxer/pittie and would like to mold him into a service dog. It's only been a day, but I've noticed he's quite quick to please. However, at what point would you "give up" and say it just wouldn't be possible to train a dog as a service dog. I also want him to keep him off furniture, but how would you model that around a dog that DOES jump up on things? I understand if you are unable to answer all these things, and regardless love your video and sweet baby! ♡

how old is the puppy when the training (this video) starts/started? when should i start training tasks, age wise? what is the easiest trick/command (not task) to start with? when do i introduce a hand cue after the shaping down behavior (for the command down)? when do i introduce words, such as ‘free’/‘break’ or ‘place’?

Awesome video! Do you train implied stay with your commands ? How do you reinforce and proof these with the young pups ? My pup seems to be catching on to commands but pops up quite quickly. Do you continue rewarding in postion then break? Do you verbal correct?

I am 15 years old ans im training my dog myself with help of one other trainer have a Doberman she is just over 1 year old i first got her when she was 4 from a very good breeder I had her brought to a trainer he is also certified training he told me that she is a evey good dog and she would make a great service dog. ON that note I have arthritis since I was 18 months old I also have ADHD and anxiety its very hard for me to walk walk and some days I can't even get out of bed when I need to go out I use a Kane . I'm curious how often and for how long you do formal training. Also, do you keep the harness on or only during training?

I know you've probably been asked this a lot, but what do you think about GSDs for psych work and light mobility work? It'll be a few years before I get another dog, but I've been flip flopping on breeds. The thing is, I want a high drive and higher energy dog that can go hiking, swimming, biking, maybe sports, but also a dog that can be a service dog. My current service dog is 100% owner trained, a poorly bred Australian Shepherd, and is lower energy. I've been looking at field goldens, field labs, GSDs, Malinois (Mals are my dream breed, but thinking to not go with this breed for service work, more so a sport dog), Australian Shepherd, and a few others. I like a little bit larger dogs and field goldens, field labs, and Aussies are a bit smaller than I'd like. I see a lot of successful GSDs as service dogs, even psych dogs. But I do know they tend to feed off the handler and so many handlers advise against GSDs. What are your thoughts, as a professional trainer, as GSDs for psych work?

Really cool video! Just a little concerned by seeing a few prongs/chokes in the video. Are you a force free trainer? Do you use those types tools?

I wonder why touching an AD's back while eliminating is important. Eps is fine with ablutions on cue on different surfaces and places but I have never had a reason to be touching her in the process. I wonder if this is GD specific as I can understand their may be value to a VIP of knowing when dog has finished.

Hey! So I had a lady in a Service dog group tell me she would chase me out of a store if she saw me with my pup in a cart (I have extreme social anxiety hence the training my service dog)...
