2 years in the making, this is my story of training for and competing in a Half Ironman race. This has been a goal of mine for a very long time. I was not sure if work/family/social life was going to allow it. Like anything worth doing, you need to make sacrifices in certain areas to allow growth in others. There is a ton of blood, sweat, and tears put into this video. This is by far my most epic life achievement so far. If it was easy...everyone would be doing it. SWIM BIKE RUN!
Big thanks to my family for putting up with my training schedule. More thanks to my brothers for being my training partners and video/photo crew when needed.

Great video Ryan, Thank you very much for sharing your experience .. I am training for Ironman 70.3 middle east championship in bahrain this December 10 (2016). Just started the training for the last 2 months. Basically I am a distance runner and have done some 100Kms rides. Need to improve my swimming form to make it less in effort. Your video is really an inspiration for me. Thank you

Great video, thank you very much for helping me explaining how to prepare objectives step by step. Nowadays a lot of people start Ironmans, ultratrails with few months of preparation. I'm going to start with 5 or 6 10km race, then 1 or 2 half marathon before to think to compete in an Ironman. Congrats for your hard work.

Absolutely loved the video +ryan pahl ! It may be coz I can relate to your fear of water. In fact am in a worse position since I can't swim at all, however that's the plan this time - learn to swim and conquer the fears. Am really feeling good after watching this video. Thanks for documenting the length of your training. All the best for your full Ironman friend.

Remember slow is fast. Train slow at your HR Zone 2, dont try and do a PR/PB times during your training. This guys sounded like he wanted to do that in every session. You have to build base cardio over time. This guy would have probably done even better if he would have structured his training right. Watch Triathlon Taren YT channel great info from him.

Loved the insight from your training on a HIM! I crossed off a full marathon from my bucket list this year (4:08:01), and was toying with the idea of making a 70.3 my next goal for 2017. Like yourself and many others, the swim is terrifying to think about. I plan to train like crazy on the swim between now and June so that I can go in feeling confident and ready. Thanks for the vid!

Awesome video...I too had a fear of water but I'm working on it. I can swim a little now & I'm taking lessons as my freestyle technique needs a lot of work! Slowly but surely I am beginning to see the fruits of my labour! Going to use the off season to concentrate on the swimming & hopefully I will be able to attempt the sprint or even an Olympic distance event next year! For years I have said I would love to compete in a triathlon but I knew the swimming would catch me! Well my goal is to compete in a sprint distance event next year & overcome my fear of swimming! Great inspirational video. I'm getting ready to do my 5th half iron distance (already did a full) and was loosing my motivation. This helped me get my head back into the game! I didn't start doing any triathlons until 55 years of age and had to learn how to swim to do it. I used to fear the water (almost drowned at age 12); this year I started doing swim races. I am pretty slow but get it done. I did one 5k and have another at the end of this month. It goes to show, that you can face fear and conquer it.

***** Start NOW! Best thing you can do is simulation training. Swim one day, bike the next, run the next. Or combine two workouts into one day. Also, Brick sessions are very important. You don't get to run on fresh legs on race day. So you need to condition your legs to bike hard and then immediately run. Bike/Run bricks should be a large part of your training.

+Lindsey Hansen Train hard and be mentally prepared for the last 10% of the race. That is when everything crashes and your body keeps screaming to quit. I don't think many people understand what it means to know your limits....an Ironman race is a sure way to push yourself close to that limit. Preparation and focus are the best path to confidence in your abilities. Train as if the race is tomorrow, and you'll do great.

Tony Ochoa Glad you liked it, the whole point was to try and show others what it takes to train up for a Half course race and finish feeling good, rather than completely destroyed by the race If you get to to use a wetsuit in the race you plan to challenge, then I suggest you rent one right now and try it out. The bouyancy will hugely increase your confidence in the water. Zero fear of drowning due to floating higher in the water...plus your faster with a suit. If not allowed, then I suggest you make sure you can swim 50% more than needed so that you know you can easily handle the race distance. Simulating race conditions is the best way to gain confidence in your abilities. Don't enter cold, with no idea how it will feel. Do a test race by yourself with a buddy in a canoe if needed.
