TRAINING RUN with WORKING SIBERIAN HUSKIES | Daily Life in Swedish Lapland
Follow on a short training run with our Working Siberian Huskies pulling sleds in Swedish Lapland. In this video you will follow me, Matti, with 10 of our sled dogs. You will see how we work with our dogs and you will get a glimpse of our life style in the north.
Jokkmokkguiderna is a small guide company who offer tours in Jokkmokk, Swedish Lapland all around the year. During the winter it’s mostly dog sled tours and summertime it’s canoe, hiking tours and wildlife safaris. We, Matti Holmgren and Stina Svensson own and run Jokkmokkguiderna. We live year round with our Siberian Huskies and Border Collies in Jokkmokk, North of the Arctic Circle.

You are great with your dogs, you do everything to calm them but then ask them to be excited and crazy when you speak to them in that excited squeaky voice. You would find dropping that praise until you move off will greatly improve things.

No...we haven't. One guy write to me and told me to not raise my voice to the dogs when they made some trouble. I agree that I sometimes do that. I also agree that it's better to avoid that BUT when you standing with 12 dogs in front of the sled and an big elk pop up on the trail the dog MUST do what you ask them to do... I'm not asking them to do something in this stressful situations. I command them to do what they must do. ...but if I do strange things it's sometimes a reason and sometimes it's time for me to learn something new. 😀 /Matti

Great film, really insightful into the life you have and the process. I’m keen to understand how you introduce a younger dog to working? How young, how do you build up intently etc? I have a Northern Inuit pup and keen to know what level of exercise I can give her without future harm, but enough to make her strong.

JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA That would be FANTASTIC. The journey from a puppy where their bones and joints are still growing meaning you cannot place too much stress on them through intensive exercise to when they are ready to work at full capacity such as your guys easily pulling for 30km per day. I want to better understand how you build up their strength without over doing it. Also whether you have had any issues with joint issues with your guys? Look forward to seeing something 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

What if your dogs see an elk or a rabbit on a tour and want to chase after it, how would you be able to control them from doing so and crashing? How many KMs of run do they get everyday? :) on a tour like this, each dog pulls about 10 kg of weight (assume you, the cart and 20kg of food are approximately 100kg), is that a good weight to pull for huskies? Lastly! Is it too late to train 3-year-old huskies to pull sleds, if they’ve never done that before? Thanks for the great content and hope to hear from you soon!

At what age you start training your dogs and how long does it take for them to obey your commands??
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! The training starts from day 1. In the beginning just contact and cosy time. When they start walking around we start to call them. They should come to us when we have food etc. Just playfully. When they ar 6 month they should now that they are not allowed to jump out through a door until we tell them to do that. They should come when we ask them to come. Now it's not only playful. Now we really want them to listen. 6 -10 month we start with harnessing them. In the beginning just short distance and suuuuuper playful. Just fun, fun and fun. Every time you start with something new it should be playful and fun. Not to big steps forward. Mabye we can make a video about this in the future. Thanks for watching and thanks for asking. :-) /Matti and Stina

Fredrikk forkbeard i live at 7,000 feet and am frequently in the mountains between 8 and 11,000 feet with my dogs. Even spending all day out in a blizzard, on the coldest of days, I have never seen one of my huskies get cold. A human will freeze solid long before a husky grows tired of the cold.

Hej! /Matti

@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA 3 жыл бұрын
I usually don't use necklines on my team. If you have disciplined dogs that don't goes to others dogs, animals etc that you pass by then I think it's better. This gives the dog more freedom if they suddenly stepped into the deep snow or need to slow down the speed. BUT our guest team has necklines because it's easier if you are a beginner. This is how we are thinking. Do you have dogs? Do you use necklines? /Matti
