Im not quite sure why some of the drop shots are over the service line. Is it because you want to play a faster shot to pressure your opponent more? I just feel like playing the drop shot before the service line is better as it forces ur opponent to stretch or move one more step.
@justinhu3928

The opponent has more time when u play a slow dropshot. Also, because the shuttle is so close to the net, the opponent can hit a tight spinning net drop back. I think hitting a tight dropshot is good to mix things up, but not too much otherwise the opponent will get used to it.

Good question :) First, the ideal drop shot doesn't have to go past the service line, but it should be fast. And this drill helps with getting used to hitting faster and flatter shots. Playing a faster shot to pressure the opponent is the right idea :) When you're playing against a fast player, if you hit a slow drop, they'll rush up to it, and have many options from there. They can net tight, forcing you to scramble to the front and lift, and then they'd smash, or they can push you to the back or hit a cross net. Hitting a drop over the service line also is less of a kill shot, and more of a neutral shot with some pressure. When you hit a drop that's fast and goes over the service line, even though the opponent doesn't have to stretch as much, they also can't catch the bird as high. This shot is more to keep the rally going and set up for the next shot. I think the ideal drop shot would be a fast one that lands before the service line, but that's hard to do when the opponent hits to the back, and hits flat shots. I've been hitting slow drops for most of my badminton "career" and recently, I've begun to notice that the faster players take advantage of it. You can kinda see what I mean in this video, my friends completely out-sped me haha. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZseanryKqLqdooE.html Hope this answers your question, but happy to discuss it!

@@BadmintonwithJeffrey Ah, that makes sense. I have never thought about that before! Hopefully I can tweak my brain to try to hit a faster drop shot cause I am so used to aiming for a drop shot before the service line. Thank you! :)

@@BadmintonwithJeffrey It depends on the situation. The dropshots mentioned in the video is better in LD and TH's cases because they're in balance most of the time. If they are in balance, like what has been pointed out, they can play a tight spinning net shot off the dropshot. OTOH if a player manages to get behind it early (they anticipated opponent's shot or opponent is out of balance because of a good shot beforehand - AND they decide to do a drop, then play those closer-to-the-net drops, preferably disguised and sliced. It would be a waste to do a neutral one. Another case where this 'close' shots come into handy is when the shuttle had gone past you and you're dropping it next, usually when you are then taking the shot lower because you have to go to position first (you dont wanna go full force to clear). If executed good enough, and if the opponent does not get a net cord, you most probably can get the next shot back. I think LD is one player that's the best example to study film to this especially in these later years. In his 20s this will almost never happen.

Another good content from Jeffrey! (bonus actress arranged by Jeffrey @4:43 XD) I might add that this drill also train your footwork as well. Most often than not opponent will hit to our backhand after we receive their forehand, so this drill train our speed of rotation. P.S: a flatter and faster paced shot is called a drive, it's extremely useful against opponents who are good at the net and/or super good at smashing. Chen Long plays it to perfection, just watch Olympic 2016 final and 2015 WC final, him using it to neutralised LCW

Nice play. Some suggestions: 1. your backhand is not bad, your backhand is not flat enough, it is because you do not have enough space to open your left arm to make it flat, in other words, the birdy is too close to your body, in this case, you can use Malay Jump or China Jump for overhead, when to use backhand? p9.pstatp.com/large/2a41000390cd6dc91ca2 . 2. take a look at 3:02, birdy is in a good position to use backhand, however, your right feet do not go behind your left feet, it makes your shot has less variety (no diagonal shot), your opponent knew that, and moved to his right half-court before you make the shot, so when you use backhand, you have to fully turn your body to watch back, like this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNtzqa52mJjIdX0.html
@chenguanghe6074
@chenguanghe6074 4 жыл бұрын
Also, you missed many opportunities for smashes, since you stand too close to the net. all your offending weapons (drop, flat-high, smashes) requires the birdies is in front of you. if your opponent has no strong net skill like momota or you have strong footwalks like young linden to jump back, I suggest you stay back, for example, in 3:34, If you are Lindan, you can use China Jump, but you use crossing footwalk, it means you are not prepared for smashing that high shot, so in 3:35, your opponent watched your footwalk which limited the variety of your returning shot and move to same side of court before you hit the birdie

@@chenguanghe6074 Thanks for your feedback, sorry for the late reply! First, I thought the diagram was super interesting, I just never saw the court split up in a diagram like that haha. Also for the video that you linked... she was my first coach actually!!! hahaha what a coincidence. What I would say to that though is the contact point will not always be ideal, in the shots in the video, I think I was rushing back so my positioning was off. I'll definitely be working on having better positioning though. And that's a great point! There were many opportunities to smash for sure, but 1. My current style isn't super aggressive. I just want to get to the shot in a good position and hit back good shots. I'm more of the rally type. 2. I'm a bit out of shape so if I play too aggressively I'll get too tired. Sure, I could win the point, but I could then lose the next three. 3. I've been working on being more fast and aggressive :) It's part of the point of the drill. These are some rallies from my latest drilling session, do you notice any improvement? (you can be honest haha) 1. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbZimMpnyqjGiKc.html 2. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arqdfdRjktawj30.html Thanks for your taking the time to give thoughtful tips, and thanks for watching!!

You always moved properly behind the shuttle instead of doing China Jump sometimes. Do you always play so defensive or were you just worn out?
@BadmintonwithJeffrey
@BadmintonwithJeffrey 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I wouldn't say I always play defensive but I do tend to stay on the ground and I don't do that many China Jumps. My playstyle isn't super aggressive and I go for the longer rallies, so for me, as long as I can get there in time and hit back a quality shot that gives my opponents a hard time, makes them move, and doesn't put me in a bad spot, then it's good enough for me. My game relies more on consistency and forcing the opponent to make the first mistake. That being said, I'm also not super physically fit, so it's my way of preserving my stamina xD If I go super aggressive, I might win that point, but then go on to lose the next five xD I think with the box drill, I'm trying to work on playing more aggressive and hopefully get more physically fit. Good observation Lasmiranda :) Hope that answers your question!

@@BadmintonwithJeffrey I also think that's the right way. You got very good footwork, so its the right tactic. But i guess, you still have to surprise your opponent with faster intervention with China jumps from time to time.
@BadmintonwithJeffrey
@BadmintonwithJeffrey 4 жыл бұрын
@@lasmirandadennsivillia5048 Of course :) It's basically another weapon/tool which opens up more options and makes me more unpredictable. It will definitely be something I will work on in the future, and probably make a video for! Also thanks, my footwork still has a lot of room for improvement haha. Hopefully you will notice that it keeps getting better.

Hey jeffrey!! Why they don't prefer tight net drops? Although they can!! But why?! Does it kills the pace of the game or because they want to play it really safe?!
@BadmintonwithJeffrey
@BadmintonwithJeffrey 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah! It kills the pace of the game and they're super fast. If they hit a slow drop to the front, the opponent will come up and have many options. Specifically for the net drop, if the opponent hits a far net drop, and you go for a tight net drop, the only way you can hit it is high and slow, so it falls tight to the net. When the opponent sees that, they'll come up and hit a super tight net drop in return, and you'd have to rush up and by that point, you can only hit a high lift. Not sure if that answers your question haha
