Beckenham Junction station was, originally, the terminus of the Mid-Kent Railway opening on 1 January 1857, spurring off from the current main railway after New Beckenham station. The next year, the West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway extended the line down to Shortlands. Over the next few years, several more lines would open up and join up to eventually form the London, Chatham and Dover Railway by 1863, running express services from London Victoria down to the port of Dover where passengers could then catch boats to mainland Europe and beyond. From 1994 to 2007, Eurostar trains between London Waterloo and Paris Gare du Nord would pass through the station and use the main line to reach the Channel Tunnel however, this ended once High Speed 1 was constructed and services transferred over to London St Pancras.
On 23 May 2000, the station would gain a new service when Tramlink services (later London Trams) began terminating at the station, branching off just before the bay platform used by Southern trains from London Bridge via Crystal Palace.
