The 207th video of my train spotting adventures.
-----
This video follows on not long after the Levenshulme video, heading up into Central Manchester and along the inner city lines to Deansgate railway station. A small but busy 2-platform inner-city commuter station, it was originally opened in 1849 as 'Knot Mill & Deansgate' by the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJ&AR); initial connections consisted of boats on the Bridgewater Canal nearby. For a lot of its early life, the station was renowned for its untidy appearance, and its "narrow, steep, troublesome steps, enough to tire anyone but athletes". These troubles would be rectified as time went on, and today the station boasts a combination of ramps & stairs, along with step-free lift access.
-
With the Deansgate district being expanded in the region, people saw fit to begin renaming the station, along with additional upgrades and changes to the area. The main works included making a proper station building in 1985-86 which to this day is a Grade II Listed Building with 'Knot Mill Station' in big letters at the front of the station; this coincided with changes to streets, roads and buildings in the immediate area. After this, the name was officially recognised as 'Knot Mill & Deansgate' in 1900, and thereafter as 'Deansgate' in May 1971. Sometimes people refer to it as Manchester Deansgate, or as Deansgate G-Mex due to the close proximity and connection to the Manchester Metrolink.
